World's lightest DR - Peter Hofer .22 Hornet or .17 HMR

World record

Fully functional, worldwide smallest and lightest double barrel rifle (2.2lbs)

Caliber 22/22 Hornet or 17/17 HMR (Hornady)

Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful,
we must carry it within us or we find it not.

Specially developed Peter Hofer side lever system with double underlug.

Every single part was crafted from the full material especially for this round body double barrel rifle. Every part in this double barrel rifle is newly developed and cannot be compared to the parts in a traditionally built model.

The fascination of shooting this perfectly balanced double barrel rifle is indescribable. It probably has something to do with the little boy every man carries within himself.

Designed and handcrafted by Peter Hofer - Austria
Technical conception and engravings legally protected.

Wow.

What's the wallet-damage on that thing?

Quite what to use it for I don't know, but it is a work of art to be sure.

I love the serpentine bolsters on the action, wonder what distance it is regulated to?

As for price, I think it may be a case of "if you have to ask- then you can't afford it" as the saying goes. My bet would place it well above £20,000 UK ($40,000 U.S) as even though small, the work is every bit as involved as a full grown rifle.

As impractical as it is (17 HMR), I would not pass on one as a gift

Re: World's lightest DR - Peter Hofer .22 Hornet or .17 HMR

I think that price estimate might be conservative.

These .17 HMRs or .22 Hornets are similar in construction to those little .410 shotguns that are around, except they have hammers and are of course nothing in comparison to these beautiful little double rifles. Alan McKenzie posted a thread about he or a friend whom is working on a .22 Hornet project of that sort.

I think a little double might be quite cool in something like .22 Hi-Power with its 70 gr bullets. A great little wallaby, roo, small pig, goat or smaller deer rifle.

I would want a scope on a .17 HMR and that would ruin one of these masterpieces.

Re: World's lightest DR - Peter Hofer .22 Hornet or .17 HMR

I have handled this rifle and it is a fine piece to be sure.
It is flawless in fit and appearance! These photos look like they are from the IWA show.
I would agree with you NitroX that the price estimate is on the conservative side....makers traditionally sell the smaller pieces for more than the larger calibres part of that is due to the fact that the work is extremely delicate, there is far less room for error with the small scale rifles, and they are not made as often so the set up is a "onesy, twosy" type thing as opposed to say setting up to make 10 or 20 .375 actions for example.

As for the scope,,,, the 17 HMR needs it in my opinion... its a shame that you cant find good optics with 1/2" and 3/4" bodies.

We displayed a set of 22 cal double bolt actions in our booth they were prototypes and drew a great deal of interest... we are now in the process of making prototypes in the 17 HMR..... there appears to be a greater market for them than one would imagine.

Your prices are way off brother I have a Hofer gun and they start at about $200,000.00 USD - That's two hundred thousand and up. His guns take about 4000 hours to complete minimum.

That little Hummer is definitley a sweet litrle rifle.
; We use large scopes on our HMR's for gophers to 240 yards. Past that range, we use the little .17Ackley Hornets and .17 Ackley Bees.

Sinner

Well at least I did say WELL above £20,000

I wonder if given Mr Hofer's location in Germany he could persuade one of the German scope makers to make a quality German scope commensurate in size to the rifle.

I had seen some pictures of this rifle previously from the IWA show, but to see them now in such detail as posted is wonderful, the workmanship is nothing short of superb

You are lucky to own a gun by such a maker, worth every penny, I agree.

Jonathan:
Hofer is located in Ferlach Austria and I would hope that he and a few other makers would be able to convince Swarovski to make a line of small bodied scopes.... I think there is a decent size market for these optics as 1" and 30mm tubes just look out of place on smaller guns IMO.

I had heard that this particular piece is $650,000.00 USD and 5,000 hours upon completion. Staggering, though magnificent!

Have refurbished an old scope to complete my PURDEY rook rifle project. Wished I could have purchased a new small bodied scope for project.

Redfield used to make a 3/4" scope. Beleave it was 4 power. And before anybody screams I no it ain't a Swarovski. They look a lot more presentable on a 22.

Re: World's lightest DR - Peter Hofer .22 Hornet or .17 HMR

There are small tube scopes as used on buffalo and target rifles, available in the States now. I don't remember their name.

A search in Handloader and/or Rifle magazine might bring it up. It was just last fall iirc. The Article was written by Mike Venturnino.

I only use German scopes on London guns. If my life depended on the scope I would temporally fit a leupold.

Glad you resurrected this, John! I hadnt seen it before!

So, guys, would you get it in .17 HMR or .22 Hornet? It would be a tough choice.. .17 HMR would be fun and neat but the Hornet is reloadable and a snazzy little cartridge (my most used, in fact)

Tried to get BOSS & PURDEY to build a hornet double and failed. Compromised and BOSS will do a 5.6 x 50 R o/u and PURDEY a 5.6 x 52 R sxs and a 22 hornet in single shot rook rifle. I love the hornet in this post.

Fantastic, I love sidelevers. Now here is a question. If you were having Boss build you an over/under shotgun, sidelever, which side would you have the lever on ? I am assuming a right hand shooter. Think about it, not an easy decision ? I have seen different arguments, best, Mike

Re: World's lightest DR - Peter Hofer .22 Hornet or .17 HMR

Mike Bailey BOSS is a over / under top lever. New owner of BOSS I think is keen on S/L development. My project started 10 / 2007 and is due for completion this year. Will have medical and financial test to see if I can have a go again. PURDEY project started 2011 and due for completion late 2017 early 2018.

Re: World's lightest DR - Peter Hofer .22 Hornet or .17 HMR

If I could only have one firearm and had the money it would be a Boss O/U 12 bore, sidelever, 30" barrels and one of their single triggers as long as they signed a guarantee that they would repair that trigger if it goes wrong free of charge. It is the most complicated thing in the world !! It has, from memory, 36 parts !! and there are probably about 5 people who know how to fix them PROPERLY

Fantastic little rifles.
I've handled an example of his 17HMR rifle. Although it's super light, it handles very nicely.
All of his rifles are art pieces.
