The Double of the Day

In order to entertain our double rifle connoisseurs I have unashamedly raided the public domain of the internet.

Here bringing to you pics of double rifles, big bore and smaller, daily or thereabouts.

.500/.465 Nitro Express Holland & Holland

The first. An early sidelock Holland & Holland from 1923 in .500/.465 Nitro Express. With hand detachable locks this Dominion grade double rifle has 26" barrels, double triggers, ejectors twin folding and one standing leaf express sights and a flip up moon sight. The rifle is also cased in its original leather case.

Posting this one as a member was interested in a WD double. This is a .470 Nitro Express William Douglas double rifle with ejectors, scroll engraved boxlock and 23 1/2" side by side barrels.

Hand detachable locks, hammer rifle in .318 Westley Richards Nitro Express. Horn butt plate, horn grip cap. Barrels have full length rib with one standing and four folding leafs from 100 to 500 yards. 26 inch barrels.

Double Drilling of the Day - Twin 8x60 & 20 gauge

Defourney Drilling 8x60mm, 8x60mm & 20 gauge

This drilling would have to be an ideal rifle for driven game. Side by side 8x60mm rifle barrels plus a 20 gauge shottie for the flying and small stuff

I think I will take the 600NE Purdey double. Actualy ,I might take two and keep one as a spare in case I misplace one. I wonder how often guns of this quality would be used in the field.

That rifle was advertised for a mere US$395,000. So why not take three and bargain them down to a cool mil for the three.

In answer to your question, probably never.

Don’t be too quick to think some great doubles don’t make their way to a bush camp. It is the cheap part of the excessive.
