Went to the range here today to shoot the Gibbs.450 and the Manton 10bore. No rest. Shooting 50 m completely off hand. I tested some different shooting styles in regards to see if holding the double differently changes the grouping. And it does. 1st grouping(circle 1) here on target the shots pulls to the left. The second grouping I change position on the shouldering and the grouping tighten and moved. The hole in top is a 10bore for comparison. The disc is an anglegrinder disc. I changed the last shooting by placing the rifle a little more center to the core. |

Those are really nice guns. The second group, almost exactly at point of aim, if at 6 o'clock, is quite good. The low shot 'happens'. Beautiful guns. |

With you 100% Jens Although I have never hunted dangerous game, a hammerless toplever Nitro must be the most practical But for history and beauty nothing beats a hammer double with Jones underlever (or Lancaster slide and tilt) action which is why I have spent much of my remaining pensions on them!! Subtle differences in styles between late 1860s to 1900 and bore sizes from under .300 to 4 bore make them all the more interesting TH44 |

There is a quite famous picture, of Jack Lott with a cape buffalo and showing in the picture, it the double hammer .577 light (I think) smokeless rifle he used. |

Quote: Drop me a line on: rigbymauser@yahoo.dk I`ll send the artical. One of my favorits. It should be a sticky on this forum really. The more I get to shoot these old hammer doubles the more I see the light in handling and construction. Jack Lott explains very well in the artical why a sidehammer screwgrip double is fantastic in every which way. |
