Well, other than the Rigby, he had them all right.
Probably should have listed the 500/465 instead of the 416 and he should have titled the article noting that these are dangerous game cartridges rather than more broadly double rifle cartridges.
Sticking to double rifles more widely, he should have had a medium like the 400/360 or a 375 Magnum or 2-1/2” in there.

Agree-found it odd he put the Rigby in there.. however he did mention a 375 on the last paragraph..

"While I am limited to just five cartridges for this article, there are many good, useable choices, such as the .375 Holland & Holland Flanged, .450 No. 2 and the .475 No. 2, which I wouldn’t hesitate to use in the field."

Interesting article.
I agree there should or could be a separation between hunting calibers and stopping calibers.

Re: Top-5-double-rifle-cartridges???

I would say any of the choices will take anything that walks the earth, in the hands of a person who can shoot them properly. The only reason to avoid any of those choices is, some of the ones mentioned are a little hard to find ammo , or even components for. One of my favorites is the 450-400 NE 3 inch but my choice for Buffalo is the 470NE in a double rifle, with the 450-400NE 3in. I don't hunt elephant, but if I did my choice would be a double 500NE.

Re: Top-5-double-rifle-cartridges???

Missed a very obvious one. Probably the major used one.

My list.

9.3x74R - an excellent driven game and running medium game cartridge. And will work on big and dangerous game even if minimal. A big advantage is rifles can be lighter and cheaper. Recoil is also very managable.

.375 H&H Flanged - slightly more powerful than the 9.3mm and far less common. The ,375 is usually a step up in heavier and larger double rifle models. I would love a modern scoped double rifle in .375 Flanged as my allround world hunting rifle for everything.

.400's - .408 to .411 calibre. Getting to be the best buffalo rifle calibres. .400 3 inch. And others. Still manageable recoil for many. And reasonably mild.

Slightly a step up in velocity and recoil, the new .416 No.2 Rigby and .500/416 NE. I think the first will be a great new contender for sales if other makers pick it up. These rifles do have extra velocity so increased recoil. And heavier rifles.

One reason perhaps the .500/416 never took off, applies to the .416 No.2 Rigby as well, is if the recoil is similar to the .450 NE, why not just use a .450 NE?

I came to this conclusion re the .500/416. And also consideration of the hot .375 Verney-Carron, vs the .375 Flanged. Double rifles aren't hotshot long range shooting rifles, so in my opinion, go up a calibre, a wider heavier bullet, but slower and also more effective. Or a lower recoiling cartridge in a more handy, lighter rifle.

Then we start to get to the stopper rifles. The .450's. The .450 NE's. And .470's, the most common new rifle DR choice, probably after the 9.3mm. The .475 etc. Shooting 480 to 500 gr projectiles at similar velocities.

Then the real stopper rifle choices. The .500 NE. And .577 NE. If you want a rifle for elephant up close, and especially in thick jess or forest. Wounded buffalo. Even lions "boiling" out of the bush, these are the ones you want your "gunbearer" to have close at hand. Heavier rifles, and hit hard at both ends.

Some might include the .600 NE, but I think they are very rare.

other than the 9.3x74R and the .470 NE, I wonder what are the most sold rifles, and also the most sold ammunition and components for DR cartridges? Particularly the medium calibre choices? Perhaps the 7x65R? 8x57RS mm?

Re: Top-5-double-rifle-cartridges???

My choices would be..

1) The .450 Nitro. Bullets from 300-500 grain will cover most game on earth within 0-150 yards.
2) ...9,3x74
3) ...7x65 RWS
4) ... 470 nitro
5) ... 8x57 JRS

Factory ammunition can be had easely which for me is a must. Guns can be made light without a brisk recoil.

+1 It is a crowd pleaser

The "best 5", the "worst 5", the "oldest 5", the "(pick a category) 5"........ it's basically nothing but dumbed down page filler to keep print magazines going. Who knows?
Maybe the average black plastic rifle oriented magazine reader is content to accept that there are only 5 double rifle cartridges in existence......because the "expert" says so.

IMO, an odd choice to include the .416 #2 Rigby, likely very scarce at the range or in the field.

Although I have an old English DR caliber 577NE , but despite everything , for me a classic DR for hunting big game should at least have the caliber 45.

Re: Top-5-double-rifle-cartridges???

With the .416 as the odd one out, the argument is, should we go for a lighter, all round calibre like the .375 H&H flanged, the 9.3 x 74R, even Curl's beautiful .303 or the (almost) ultimate stopper the .577 3" nitro?

The answer, of course is to extend the 5 to 6 so both can be included!!

All theory on my part as I have never hunted in Africa, but shooting Cal's and other guys rifles in Alaska last year the .500 Nitro was as much as I could handle

Re: Top-5-double-rifle-cartridges???

If you can handle a 500NE , you can handle much more , also a 577NE or a 600NE.

There is a difference between these cartridges in terms of recoil , but all a matter of habit and to do it.

You do not have to hunt in Africa or even be a hunter to shoot with this rifles. I also have a DR 600NE , and some shooters non hunters shot with both , 577NE and 600NE. This is often better than you think , shooters have often , on the contrary to hunters , no prejudices.

Re: Top-5-double-rifle-cartridges???

Yes, the bigger doubles also increase in weight and somewhat offsets the recoil, or so I'm told - never personally fired a double bigger than 500NE.

.577 NE and bigger rifles are specialist rifles. As stopper rifles. Heavier and much more expensive. A reason they are rarer.

Re: Top-5-double-rifle-cartridges???

Cal's .600 NE was brutal even with being heavier, the .577 NE only slightly less so.
His DB 4 bore slightly less so due to the weight but I needed the support of sticks to hold it up
My own DB H&H 8 bore is relatively mild in comparison
Still well worth the trip to Alaska for such shooting, as there is probably nowhere in the world where I could shoot these supreme rifles

I also got a chance to shoot Cal’s 600 at the 2018 AK shoot. That thing had recoil that kept on coming. Also shot his 8 bore and another member’s 577. Personally, the 600 and 8 bore were near identical in the recoil department. The 577 was (for me) quite a significant step down in recoil. I personally felt the 577 to be easier (less snappy) to shoot when compared to a few 500’s.

I had the chance to shoot a lot of 500's and a few 577's when Westley Richard's had an office here in town..they let me test the consignment models as they come through the door to make sure they worked properly..and put them on paper to see how they grouped..never found the .577 to be unbearable..but have no interest in firing anything bigger..like my retina's just where they are..

Re: Top-5-double-rifle-cartridges???

Top 5? Without reading the article here is my list for whatever it’s worth and not in any particular order:

.450 NE
.500 NE
9.3x74R
.375 Flanged Magnum(this one is not very common but I really like it)
.450-400 3”

Extend the list and I’d include the .303 British, & 7x57R.

I would exclude several popular metric medium bores because I don’t live or hunt in Europe, and I’d exclude items like the .577NE & 600NE because the rifles are too heavy IMHO to be lugged around all day and would not be a comfortable field gun for my taste.

Thanks, guys! But which one? In .303 I have:
* 4 doubles;
* 1 bolt; and
* 1 single shot.

Actually I think the time is approaching when I will shake loose a couple of the doubles. But which ones?

Re: Top-5-double-rifle-cartridges???

BTW Joel Dorleac-Guisset displayed three lovely Rigby Rising bites elsewhere, a .303, a .350 and a .470.

The poor fellow is hunting chamois again currently, but this time in the Balkans, but promised to show the rifles sometime in November. Looking forward to it.

A .303 in a double rifle, or a classic single, seems such a no nonsense but still effective rifle for any medium game. And of course the bolt action, where a classic sporting rifle has so much class.
