.333 jeffery Double!
|
I just wondered how often one encounter a doublerifle in the .333jeffery flanged! I am about to have a Mauser made chambered in the rimless version, but I have allways been aware that there was a rimmed version for doublerifles!

I have a Jeffrey 333 Flanged Double and a Jeffrey Mauser 98 Bolt action,
both of which are in the US at the moment.
The Jeffrey Mauser 98 Bolt action is the 2nd one I have owned.
They are around - I know a few collectors who have bolt guns in 333
but can't immediately remember any other doubles.

I was interested in buying a double chambered for the flanged .333 about 8 years ago, but the bores were very bad and I couldn't get it to hold better than 5 inches at 50 yards! Pity, it was a Jeffery 'Maharajah Gun' with the prowling tigers engraving, externally the best example I have ever seen!
How crisp is this baby?!
Here are the proofs:
In 'British Single Shot Rifles, Vol.3', Wal Winfer reckons that most of the .333 Farquharsons he examined had stuffed bores, and speculated that the combination of cordite and chamber design was to blame. That and the fact that it was such a useful cartridge, most rifles so-chambered were very well-used!
The .333 in either guise should be no problems with modern powders, of course. Good luck with the project, rm.

Yes two very nice looking rifles. Rusty, yours is a .400 isn't it, or is it a .333?
A .333 certainly sounds like a versatile cartridge/rifle.

Yes, mine, is a 450/400 3 inch, circa 1910.
I would like to know if there is a 4 digit number on the under rib of the 333 near the barrel loop?
Just thought the engravings were quite a bit alike, although not the same.

William Larkin Moore currently has one advertised I think 11k.
Refinished and doesn't look like it has engraving.

No info on the four-digit number, though it looks as good a candidate for Leonard's talent as any! I checked my photos, none show the under-rib, and the gun is long-gone I'm afraid.

Hi Guys, I own a fine Jeffery double in 333 Flanged. It was made in 1912 and once belonged to the Maharaja of Sonepur, has a scalloped action, heel and toe plates and full scroll engraving. The bores are frosted but good and I have been able to get decent regulation using R22 and R15. The rifle is accurate (i.e. each barrel shoots to the same point of impact with consecutive shots), but it still doesn't regulate as well as I'd like it to. Am thinking of trying IMR 4831 or other powders. Any thoughts? Have any of you worked up handloads for a 333 double? Thanks for any help. Keith
PS On top of the barrels is inscribed "250 grain bullets". I think most Jeffery doubles were regulated for 250s. The proof is for 42 grains cordite and 300 grain bullets.
