Miller & Val Greiss Double Rifle - 10x47R load data needed

"Miller & Val Greiss Double Rifle - 10x47R load data needed"

Hello all,

I just purchased another Miller & Val. Greiss Double rifle. Based on a chamber cast, I think its likely a 10x47R caliber. Although this was typically a target cartridge, I think in this case it was intended for small / medium game.

"Miller & Val. Greiss / Munchen" is engraved on each lock and an "LS" on the bottom of one the left barrel. There is no caliber marking to be found.

I'm trying to determine the correct bullet weight for 10x47R so I can load cartridges. The bores slugged at .398 - .399 inches. I have brass and dies and have loaded a few test rounds with 250g bullets that were loaded with AA5744 and IMR4198 powder, but have no data to use as a guide in determining what bullet weight and velocity are correct for this cartridge.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Specs for the rifle are as follows:

Swing-Lever Double Hammer Double Rifle - Non-Rebounding Hammers - Engraved Receiver & Back-Action Side Locks - Barrels marked "LS" "12762" - Locks marked "Miller & Val Greiss / Munchen" - Gold Inlaid Decorative Breech Bands - 6 lbs 13 oz - 13-3/8" LOP - 24-13/16" Barrels - 1 Standing 1 Folding Leaf Rear Site & Pop-up Tang Site - Set Triggers (both) - Horn Swing-Lever - Spur Trigger Guard w/ Pierced & Scrolled Dark Horn Finger Rest - Steel Engraved Trap Butt Plate holds 3 rounds - Sling Swivels

thanks

this was a blackpowder only cartridge, never realy available as a factory round. such cartridges were loaded by ammo firms or your local gunmaker on demand if you wish but you will not find any loading data today.
fill it with blackpowder and try if the double shoot, than copy the velocity with nitro.

btw, Miller & Valentin Greiss was the top gunmaker in München, maybe good like anyone else but I suspect the double rifle was made in Suhl/Zella Mehlis.
maybe in the white delivered than finish by M& V.G.

Hello lancaster,

Thanks for the reply.

You might be right about where this rifle was made. Although it has fairly good quality, I don't think the quality is up to that of my other Miller & Val Greiss. I'm sure you remember my earlier post about my other M&VG double rifle. That's the double with the Martini style action. I thank you for helping me with cartridge and bullet info. Thanks to you I've got that one shooting great!

As far as black powder goes, I did load some this morning. I loaded 4 cartridges with FFFg black powder and will measure the velocity. I used 55g compressed to the base of a 265g bullet. I have tried IMR4198 with a 250g bullet and got a velocity of 1340 fps. Groups were crossing but acceptable. I'm not sure if that velocity is in the ball park for the bullet weight, or not.

***** UPDATE ***** ***** UPDATE ***** ***** UPDATE ***** ***** UPDATE *****

I just got back from the range. I've been shooting on our 50-foot indoor range because the weather has been bad. Its not the way I generally work up a load for one of my doubles, but it will do until we get a nice day so I can shoot outside at 50 yards.

I think I've finally completed this task, for now. As stated above, I loaded 4 cases with 55g FFFg and a 265g half-jacket bullet. The velocity measured 1215 fps with a 11 fps spread from low to high. I'm guessing that is pretty close to what this rifle was regulated to shoot. The 4-shot group went into a 1-hole group that measured a 3/8" spread. (first target) I couldn't really tell which were the rights and which were the lefts, but I don't think it matters. I do recall that the very first shot was the one that went dead-center.

I also loaded 4 cases with 26g AA5744 and the 265g half-jacket bullets. The velocity measured for these was 1345 fps with a 3 fps spread from low to high. Those also shot into a 1-hole group, except that they were a little higher and to the left of center. (second target) That group measured a 1/4" spread. And, like the black powder group, I couldn't tell which were the rights and which were the lefts.

So, next time I shoot this rifle it will be on the outdoor 50 yard range. However, I won't be shooting any black powder, too much mess, smoke, and clean-up time. Besides, the AA5744 load has 6 pounds less recoil (10.9 ft/lbs vs 16.9 ft/lbs) and 190 ft/lbs more muzzle energy. (1055 ft/lbs vs 865 ft/lbs) Neither has enough energy for BIG GAME, but plenty good enough for Wisconsin White Tail Deer and smaller game.

I'm pretty happy how this went.

Hello lancaster,

Thanks for the reply.

My thinking is that if it shoots into a 1/4" cluster at 50 feet, it should shoot into a 3/4" cluster at 50 yards, or "good enough" - even if it groups a little bigger.

Looks like 41 Magnum handgun ballistics, which is a proven deer cartridge.

Hello 93x64mm

Thanks for the reply.

The Bertram 9.5x47R cases came from Buffalo Arms. Because I didn't have reloading dies, the fire-formed cases were neck-sized only in a laborious process that involved five stages; first, de-priming and re-priming by hand, then using a 41 mag seater die, next, a 41 mag sizing die, and then a 41 Long Colt sizing die. Finally, a 41 mag seating die was used to seat the bullets. It takes about two hours to swage bullets and load 20 cartridges. Finally today I received the correct 10x47R loading dies that were ordered from C&H.

Although this rifle is not intended for hunting BIG GAME, its plenty good enough for hunting Wisconsin White Tail Deer and other smaller game. .....

.... and its the perfect size for hunting the Ferocious Rabbits found in the Wisconsin North Woods. . . aka . "Bunny-Horribilous"

buckstix,

I just now sent you a private message. I'd like to pick your brain regarding the 10X47R round.
