As we approach the 200th anniversary of Alexander Henry’s birth (4th of June 2018), as his great great grandson, I’d like to create an “inventory” of his rifles and shotguns, so that we can have an idea of how many are still in existence. I realise this can never be “complete”, and will be “out of date” as soon as it is created! Donald Dallas’ book “Alexander Henry Rifle Maker” lists all serial numbers from no. 120 (starting when he took over Samuel Gourlay’s business in 1852) to no. 8545. If you own one – and you’d like to help … please let me know • the serial number • some idea of where you live (country or city or post/ZIP code) • anything especially interesting about the gun or its history Please reply by Direct Message (DM) or to Alex henry rifles (one word) at gmail dot com You don’t need to give me your name, or your address – no need for it, really. I will store your forum moniker, and which forum. I will not share personal information with anyone – this is purely for my interest and research. I will be putting this message up on other forums. I will also trawl through auction sites to see what they have sold in the past. In time, I’ll map the data on a world map (anonymity still totally preserved) using something like BatchGeo. If you know other Alexander Henry owners, who probably don’t access this forum, please let them know too! If you know of museums with Alexander Henrys, let me know! I hope this will be very successful – it will be very interesting! Thanks, in anticipation! I have a couple of falling blocks and a rook rifle conversion I will email you details when I get a minute soon TH44 |
Excellent endeavour, Richard. |
You have set about a worthy task. I am enjoying reading the Henry book. |
I have a few as well. Perhaps John can set up a sub forum under the “Double Rifles Single Shots & Combinatuons” section. I think it would be nice to see photos of the rifles to get an idea of not only what survives but also in what condition or state of originality. |
Well I don’t want to hijack things ... Feedback so far is slow. I’m busying myself raking through auction sites for Henry items, on the basis that, if it was auctioned, it still probably exists ... but I’ve set myself a limit of 10 years back. I think it will build slowly ... |
I reckon I may have one in a safe ... will have to double check. EDITED TO ADD: NO I DON'T HAVE ONE. WAS CONFUSED BY ONE OF THE RIFLES IN MY MEMORY. SILLY. |
Hi Huvius, I would be disinclined to set up a specific forum at the moment. Too many forums at the moment, no used enough. So consolidating and culling is in order. (If and) when I upgrade the forums, yes a subforum might be veryu possible. (The IF is because I was supposed to do it this winter ... now next winter ... but have to be around to do it.) |
I've got details on 75 so far ... that's great ... but a long way to go ! I'm sure there must be a couple of thousand out there ... Thanks for replies so far. |
Congratulations on undertaking research on surviving Henry rifles. I sent you the serial number of my Henry. There may be other forums that you can use to request information. Also, I wonder if you could post a request in Guns International and Gun Broker as many collectors search those web sites. How will this information be preserved for future research by gun enthusiast? Will this information be used in an updated edition of Donald Dallas's new book? |
85lc ... primarily I'm interested in "how many and which" Alexander Henry weapons exist ... for starters. I don't know anything about Guns International and Gun Broker ... could do. Many replies give me some details, and even photos, but it would be a huge ... HUGE ... task to undertake documenting all with photographs etc. Re an update to Donald's book ... you never know but ... Thanks for your continuing interest !! |

That would do very nicely. |

I just bought another AH. It is a small action falling block in 360EX with right hand hammer & stalking safety Serial Number is 6201 Location: SE USA |
That was a solid buy. I was bidding light on it and had to bow out. There’s a double 360 coming up at auction in Germany. Super cool example. https://www.hermann-historica.de/en/l/17...mp;currentpos=3 |
I rec’d the AH today. I am very happy. It actually is nicer looking than the ad. I plan to try it out this weekend, using some ammo that shoots well in my Lancaster. |

Alexander Henry's 200th birthday is 4th June - 3 and a bit weeks away ... I'm still getting info on existing rifles and shotguns made in Edinburgh, but it's slowed a bit now. Any more welcome though ! |

Just dropped in. I have a sxs 450/400 3 1/4 As soon as I remember how to post a picture I will along with the details. Serial #736%. It does have a broken striker, can you help with that? |

A. Henry double rifle #1082 just came onto the market: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/806256869 I guess you could call it surviving...not shootable, but surviving... |
Very nice looking, unfortunately it looks like the action is cracked thru left and right sides right in front of the lock plates? Not a shooter....... - Mike |
It does indeed look like it’s cracked.... That makes it a mighty expensive wall hanger or very pretty boat anchor or walking cane..... That is a terrible pity. |
Exactly! Too bad. As an aside, what do you think of the “conversion” or what that could mean? I myself, suspect that it could be that A&N could have rechambered and regelated it for a flatter shooting 577 and the rear sight leaves were altered or replaced for the flatter trajectory. Then, perhaps, someone along the line fired a nitro load in it and cracked the action. BTW, I pointed this out to the seller. Will see if he pulls the gun or discloses this major flaw. Pretty much shoots his entire condition description down in flames IMO. |
Rifle has been recolored, bet it cracked when it warped in the heat treat. I had an 8 Bore double rifle with a minor crack after recoloring. It cracked in the corner of one of the cutouts in the frame where the barrel lugs go into. (Jones underlever). A prominent gunsmith welded the crack and recolored. No problems after that. |
The action itself has no Henry marks. Look at all the pictures. The barrels are marked, but not the action. It doesn't have the relief cuts usually found in the bars of a Henry BPE double. The butt stock doesn't look very Scottish to me either. JMHO Curl |
Too - the colours looks too modern to me, overly heavy blue, not enough browns or light tans. Could very well have cracked when quenched, I guess - don't know for sure. Shooting too heavy a load also makes sense. |
No AH serial # on the bars, angle of the grip is all wrong for a Henry, way to flat. Engraving does not look right either. |
Wondering if A&N “converted” by altering the stock, or contracted with Henry? The stock surely does look a lot like typical A&N pistol grip stock profile & with no cheekpiece. I would guess that the answer would possibly be found in the A&N records. Just looked and the bidding is still going higher.........hope the bidders know what they are getting. - Mike |
Great comments. Too bad for potential bidders that they don't read your thoughts. It does look like a very fresh refinish and, not being disclosed by the seller is bothersome. Several have pointed out that the action is cracked. Perhaps my vision is not that great so could someone explain or show where the crack is. |
Look just up above & ahead of the lock's screw slot in the bottom picture. Then look at the same area on the other side of the action. The cracks are evident and easily seen(on my 24"monitor). In the bottom picture, there is actually a small piece of metal missing in the crack - which likely means a multi-fracture in the metal. |

Auction ended @ $4525.00 USD......that’s a lot of $$$ for a tarted up wall hanger. Hope the bidder knew what it was about. - Mike |

Posting for member “degoins” from the USA, an Alexander Henry .450 BPE Looked it up in my Donald Dallas book and it was finished and entered in the Henry records on 10Nov1894. Sorry, I did not get permission from the owner to post the actual serial number. - Mike EDITED: added pictures and production date |
Got to be before 1894 but regardless, another "typical" Alex Henry which just exudes the quality of style and execution that sets them above most others! I've often thought, I would be totally content owning only Alexander Henry and George Gibbs rifles. |
Quote: Ben, Looked this one up in the Donald Dallas book, in fact it is an 1894 rifle, 10Nov1894 to be exact. Very unusual to have stalking safeties at that late date, and the top strap over the comb is apparently pretty rare as well. - Mike |
A huge thanks to Mike for posting the pics for me. |
Great looking rifle. How does it shoot? |
Thanks. It shoots really good with 320 gr lead bullets and 48 gr IMR4198 with about 12 gr Dacron filler. Better than I can hold/see. |

Finally got the info for this rifle from John Dickson and Son..... The workshop ledger entry No. 6843, Double Centre Fire Express Rifle, Best, .450, 28in Damascus, ? Bar with long strap on comb, Pistol Hand, Grip Cap Stock - 1 11/16in drop at comb, 2 5/8in drop at heel , 14 1/4in to centre pull. Standing & Leaf, No. 1 notch sights, 10 Nov 94, Weight 8lb 13 1/2oz. solid taper case, 4 ½ drams powder for 325 grn, 1/8 extra 385 grn solid bullet Made for F. D. Pirie I've found nothing on the web so far about Mr. Pirie. |
There's one F D Pirie on Scotland's People website … but that's making assumptions that a) 1st and 2nd forenames are recorded correctly in both places, b) it's a male and c) he was in Scotland. He's on the valuation roll of 1905 as owner of Leckmelm estate … so that's possible. Any more research would cost me so … over to you !! |

Any more ? Bump ... |

Look at the pair of AH Howdah pistols that Collectors Firearms of Houston just posted in their new arrivals section. |
Very Nice indeed. The narrative states they are chambered for a "custom" 1 1/2" .50 cal. casing. I assume they are central fire. If Rimfire, they are close to the .50 American Peabody at 1.456". The .50 Remington M71 was 1.25". The .50/50 Maynard was 1.370". The .50 Carbine was a shortened .50/70. Since the .50/70 was 1.75", & the Carbine was shortened, perhaps the .50 U.S. Carbine or similar is the case used. I find no listing in English nor European ctgs. that are close. |
Yeah they're gorgeous ... had them on my list as they were sold by James Julia 18 months ago ... |
Daryl - The cartridge is .50 X 1 1/2", I have a "baby" Howdah pistol in that calibre (posted here somewhere) It is in Hoyem vol.3, I made cases from .500 BPE with difficulty as the chambers were very tight, probably made for foil cartridges as it is an early pistol I will check out the auction pistols but way too much for me TH44 |
Quote: Yes - I knew they were .50 1 1/2". Perhaps .50/70 or .50/90 Starline brass would be easier than .50 Exp. I suspect the Starline .50/70 or Dixie .50/70 would be easier to work with due to brass thickness, but the rims would be too thick & need turning from the front end. |

I have an Alexander Henry designed hammerless rifle that was made in Austria. Apparently, these Austrian made “Henry” rifles are not that uncommon. I intended to show pictires of my rifle but I can not figure out how to post pictures. I reached out the Axel Eichendorff who is a member of the German Gun Collector’s Association (GGCA). Axel quickly identified my rifle and provided pictures of other Henry designed rifles manufactured in Austria. Axel pointed out that Richard Hummel had authored two articles “AUSTRIAN GUNMAKING WITH A SCOTTISH FLAIR!”that were published in GGCA Magazine Waidmannsheil issues 43 and 44. My rifle was proofed as a 5.6x52R (22HP) in 1935. It was then rebored and rerifled to 6.5x52R (25/35) and proofed in 1937. All proofing was done in the Ferlach proofhouse. If you are interested and I can figure out how to post pictures, I will post Axel’s emails to me addressing my rifle and including pictures of other Austrian Henry rifles. |
Interesting - what sort of date ? |
Rich B. I am not sure that I understand. My rifle was made in 1935. Axel said Austrian gun makers started building Henry rifles (hammer and hammerless) shortly after the patents expired. The actions for the hammerless rifles are very nice looking. |
All these Alex Henry rifles are a piece of art work! I absolutely love mine, circa 1873, with the mild 450-400 x 2 3/8” cartridge, it is an absolute pleasure to shoot as well with recoil only an arthritis laden wrist can truly appreciate. I am likely going to take it deer hunting this fall. The rifle clocks 1825 fps with 200 grain 411” cast wheel weight bullets over a charge of 31 grains of H4198 and 1.5” of backer rod. The accuracy is minute of deer out to 100 yards. The iron sights are quite fine with a small bead running the length of the top of the front blade. The bead is almost not discernible it is so fine, and is meant for much sharper younger eyes than mine, but I will slap on a pair of progressive glasses and all will be well with the world. |
Nice - does it have a serial number visible ? |
The serial number of my sealing rifle is 5218. It is located in Georgia. |
Quote:Quote: I agree, John - the barrels are very heavy for the ctg. dimension, almost as if it was a cut-down rifle, but the chambering is wrong for a rifle, of course, but, it appears to have been made to the same dimensions as a SxS rifle. |

Hi Guys The .500 My Wilkinson .577 Snider Howdah Both appear ok?? TH44 |

Quote: Right bore looks pretty good in both guns - hows the other bore? I've used .577 Nitro brass for .50/70 brass by moving the rim forward for headspace reasons in a four or 5 spots around the periphery - and shortening, of course. It worked just fine. |

All the ledgers exist - what's the serial number ? |

In Donald Dallas/RB book this serial number 783 does not match I now have serious doubts about its provenance My gunsmith told me the stock is rosewood, which to me is restocked in India (although a very good job, inside and out) The only serial number is this, under the barrel, with faint proof marks See my original thread for the makers name on barrel and lock, completely different Whether barrel or lock (or both?) are original I have no idea Lock Top of barrel Gold lines show good quality anyway Daryl - the other barrels of the pistols are similar, rarely if ever fired with the corrosion you can see the only faults TH44 |
783 could be the Henry rifling patent use number (Henry rifling patent of 1860) In the book, 783 is listed as sold to Brazier. |
