Purdey Beesley action Jones underlever DRs.

Everybody, inlcuding Igor Karklinsh and Dig Hadoke, say they're pretty commonplace - but I still find them amazing.

A combination of perhaps the most advanced action for the edge, and the oldest viable lockup - sounds as post-modernistic as anything you can find in a modern art gallery.

I did a short post about them in my blog but the pictures pretty much tell the story.

(this one is (c) Dogs and Doubles
Do you agree that the rationalle for the design was an overreacted attempt to play it safe: Nitro cartridges were still a new thing in 1890s, and gunmakers weren't too sure what their actions and metal could handle.

Just keep your finger out of the way when the lever snaps shut!

It would be really hard not to like one of these rifles.

Here's my .303: James Purdey and Sons .303

Curl

P.S. They are not commonplace by any measure!

Absolutely my favorite action. They are just beautiful (Yes they will get a finger or two if you are not careful).

Fingers! I didn't think of that, but with a snap action, and how powerful the spring has to be to drive home such a heavy lever and top fastener at that... o_O

Where is the underlever spring housed?

No idea, but guess it's a sort of a clock spring between the bolt and the lever - see the little screw on the underside of the lever under the bolt? Something tells me it holds the spring.
