H&H 500/465

Have rifle s/n 28253 appears little used. Built without bolsters is this a negative. Gun may have been delivered 20 years ? After s/n sequence. Could this have been as a result of popularity of bolsters. Case and gun have largely been in proper storage. One trip to Africa by purchaser in 30s. Gun purchased by Fred. W. Owen of Melbourne Australia. Any thoughts on bolsters. Will try to get mick from Darwin to post photos.

Re: H&H 500/465

For some reason, many buyers put a premium on the bolstered frames. My assumption is that they are seen as an improvement and add strength to the action. I have never seen an H&H crack though.
I prefer the look of the older non bolstered guns.

The bolstred frame appeared after WW1 if I recall correct.

Re: H&H 500/465

I've seen quite a few of the bolstered and non bolstered H&H rifles and in my opinion the only one they look right on are 375's.The H&H rifles don't need them and like Huvius,I've never seen a cracked action although I have seen some blown up barrels.
I wouldn't build a sidelock rifle now with bolsters on it as I prefer the the non bolstered look and unless the action body is really light, they are unnecessary.

Re: H&H 500/465

Lovely!
That is exactly as I would want a Royal.
I suppose it could be possible that H&H had kept this gun for another client whom never took delivery and then eventually resold it to Mr. Owen.
I don't think that the option of getting bolsters would have kept this from selling for 20yrs and you just never know what makers did for clients at the time.
I was shocked to learn that my Westley Richards that was made for the Maharajah of Alwar in 1926 was actually built on an earlier action and renumbered. I should get the ledger page on that gun to see if it was one of his own guns returned for the build. Can't imagine that though as armory space and money were of no concern to him!

Re: H&H 500/465

That is a beautiful rifle! Congratulations.

Built between 1910 and 1914?

Bolstered actions started around 1920. The hand detachable sideplates 1908 of course.

Lovely finish.

Lovely locks! I like the hand-detachable feature. Much better than marred screw heads and corrosion due to reluctance to remove them, especially after reasonable field use.
