OK I have the safari jacket now I need a ......

Nitro Express Double rifle.

And I have finally purchased one. Waiting for the damned red tape to come through. It will take at least 35 days for the permit to come through. And I am really getting impatient.

Guess the cartridge and the maker.

Bonus points for boxlock or sidelock and any additional details.

(for the one or two people that know - no cheating )

Nitro, it'll be the longest 35 days of your life but should be well worth the wait!
A bit like a kid waiting for Christmas to arrive.
I've been through it a few times myself so I know just what your going through.
I'm going to bet that it's a ........hang on, I already know what it is so I'd better keep quiet.
Cheers Alan

I'll bet you a bottle of your Shiraz against some really good WA wine (made from Huckleberries but you won't get a chance to taste it)that I can guess what it is too.

Wow

Id like to hunt with her. Either she's 14 or your a big bloke. Like the haricut.

My guess on this "cannon" is a 470 Nitro Express and the rifle is a Merkel.

John, do you have dies and cartridge cases for the new toy?
Is it a "known shooter" with regulation loads worked out for it or will you be starting from scratch?
Of course you must give us a full rundown on the gun when it arrives.

I have dies for it plus some cases and Woodleigh softpoints. FMJs on the way.

No the rifle is not a proven shooter and the previous owner claimed he had not shot it nor loaded any rounds for it. This is possible as he had quite a few doubles and purchased them more as an investment when they were cheaper .

The bores look in good condition and I have had a gun smith have a thorough look over it before purchasing.

So I will starting from scratch and will start making up some loads for it before it arrives. Then the fun will start.

Nitro, while it's good to find a double that shoots real well this can also take some of the fun out of it .
I'm a double devotee and just love tinkering with them as well as taking them hunting.

OK

Some hints.

It has two barrels.

It is a boxlock.

It is English.

It is a big bore.

The ones that come to mind are;369 Nitro express by Purdey and second if it really is a big bore the 500 NE,a Jeffery.

Ok - another hint - the first photo

OK here is the first photo.

Now this should provide a good hint. More photos to come and the answers very soon.

Not very many guesses

And you know what is good ? When shouldering this lump of steel it comes up naturally to point of aim.

The photo above was taken by a digital camera with a timed shutter ie no one behind the camera when taken. Not that is matters as I still haven't made up any ammo for it.

But the photos I took to get the photo above were almost all taken with an unconscious aim. Look at the lens and shoulder the rifle. Dead on the sights, sometimes not even noticing the sights at all. Good omen for the future

Came across this very old post ... that rifle in the 16 years has seen at least two continents, plus at least two others in its lifetime, and also a great many hunts and numerous game. Even though a big bore, one of my favourite reached for rifles especially when the game is bovine.

Well let's see - I'll take a wild guess.

A W.J. Jeffery chambered in .450 No. 2 NE.

What you say? Not fair? Disqualified? Oh, you mean because I had that fine rifle in my hands last August I can't enter the guessing game. Dang!

Looks like a .500 to me, but what do I know about these things - not much.

Re: Ok - another hint - the first photo

Strange thing I find looking at double barrel rifles barrels the bore always looks smaller than a single barrel rifle in same or slightly smaller caliber.

Even when I had the double 500 compared to a 500 Jeffery. My 404J looks bigger than my 450 double, until side by side ( no pun intended).

My money is on a 450 or 470 caliber.

Interesting.

My.500ex H&H muzzle looks smaller than a .50cal Sharps. Doublerifle psychology here?..

Re: Ok - another hint - the first photo

I'm going for the .450 Nitro Express - gold standard all others are judged by.
Either way mate we are all jealous......well done on acquiring a double, maybe never for me but time will always tell!
And yes it's going to be a very "long" wait indeed!

It's not a secret anymore and hasn't been for sixteen years.

Of course its a .45/70.

PS somewhere since then, I have an image with one with much bigger holes ...

Back in the very early days

Saw this old thread being read. When I started the forums I was even more of an armchair expert than today. Didn't have a single nitro express rifle. Have a handfull nowadays, some even used!

If anyone on these forums can't work it out, they never will.

Ha ha.

I rally wanted a Blas(t)er in .45/70 but had to settle on a .450 No.2 NE in a WJ Jeffery boxlock double rifle ... there putting anyone out of their misery. Finally since 2002 or 3.
