Sometime ago we ran a thread on current double rifle makers. I have updated the list from contributions. IT IS STILL VERY MUCH WORK IN PROGRESS! and incomplete. The aim is to have websites for every maker that has one and contact details. Thanks for the great response and also some very enjoyable photos on the original thread at Double Rifle makers of today (old closed thread) This is being closed as it is too slow to load. This list is still Work In Progress. any corrections, additions, web sites etc are welcome Inaddition I would like a historical listing of makers of those which no longer make rifles but many of us may still have them or like to view photos of them. Please feel free to add to the HISTORICAL LISTING as well. The lines with bullet points are finalised and also have a listing in the "Double Rifle LINKS" forum. CURRENT DOUBLE RIFLE MAKERS UK
Italy
France & Belgium
Germany & Austria
Spain * Arrieta * Sarasqueta (out of business?) * Grullas * Arrizabalaga * Armas Ego * Garbi USA & Canada
Russia & Eastern Europe * Baikal * IZP (????) * Shipunov http://www.shipunov.com/eng/str/hunt/hunt1.htm ??? * CZ (I assume they still do?) DOUBLE RIFLE MAKERS OF YESTERYEAR (makers no longer in current production of double rifles) * * * |

Add Demas under france... www.demas.fr and I believe you've got the wrong Rizzini listed. I was thinking Fratelli Rizzini, although I haven't seen a DR from them in a while, I'm sure for 95K they'll build one. Also add Art under Italy. http://www.armi-art.com/ |

Charles Lancester's are still available through Mr Dave Perkins. One more for the uk list, http://www.hellis.com Arnold |

Demas was bought out by Verney-Carnon, but they still make their own stuff for the moment. Also for France add Gaucher, though they merged with Bretton, to make Bretton-Gaucher. Also the Rippamonti familly in France, both Guy and Bernard, make double rifles. |

I didn't see Mahillon for the Belgian listings http://lamaisonduchasseur.com the site seems to be down for maintenance at this time, but I think that's where to find the current flag-wavers for the Mahillon guns. A good one for your past-and-present makers list. --Tinker |

Hello Gentlemen, Been visiting this wonderful forum for more than a year, all the time learning from you knowledgeable folks. Finally, found an occasion where I can muster the courage to contribute some thing. http://guggi-arms.com/main/frame_e.htm "Waffenstube Guggi"of Austria makes some very beautiful double rifles. They are more on the lines of what one adresses as " Objets d'art". I wonder if any one will be willing to take these beauties to the bush.Regards to all- Vikram. Some nice pics to go with it. |

In reply to: 500grains, Some very nice doubles have been made on shotgun actions eg Cenury Arms, but no actual maker to my knowledge. With the wealth of existing vintage doubles here mostly from India there probably wasn' a great need. Also most Aussie hunters traditionally have used smaller bores so the big bore double was only for safaris to Africa or Shikar in India. The British double trade served the Commonwealth of Australia quite well. Vikram Welcome to NE.com. Glad to have you aboard and thanks for the addition and nice photos. Beautiful Germanic doubles there. |

One of the smaller gun makers not far from me is Trevor Proctor, very high quality work all built to order, doesn’t have a web site, he gets most if not all his work by word of mouth. I have one of his bolt rifles in 30-06. Although half the price of something by Westley Richards, I couldn’t quite stretch to one of his doubles. I have handled a few and they are very very nice. Thanks for those links... The Bretton link is my favorite, I think I shouldn't have opened that link. I have a few very nice pinfire guns, that Bretton Commemorative makes me weak, I think my checkbook just ran out the door to hide in the garden... ...perhaps it's time to get that 28bore Lefaucheux garden gun and hunt it down. One of those in 8x57 would be just tooo cool! Gotta wonder what the price is though. hmmm... --Tinker |

Thanks Michael, I think this web site must be from some time ago, his doubles start at around £16000 at present, that’s approximately $30000 US, he quoted me the usual two years to build but worth the wait if you can afford it, sadly I couldn’t, I would rather spend on hunting and settle for something a little older and a little more used. wombat, "Australain members will know that Ron Webb of Queensland was putting together some well made doubles on Ruger Red Label over-and-under actions before he retired." I liked the 375 Flanged he did but thought the action a bit small for a 500 Nitro. Don't think it would stay on the face well with high pressure cartridges. 500 Nitro |

Hello everyone in the Forum. Let´s see if my poor english will allow me to discuss a bit with you guys. I´ll try my best. As a first contribution I´ll start with this old topic: For first class spanish double rifles not mentioned in the topic: ARMAS DIEGO GODOY from Eibar (No web site or e-mail). GRAVEX (Not in Eibar, no web site or e-mail) Many of its rifles are finished by ARMAS DIEGO GODOY. ARMAS MAGUREGUI from Eibar (No web site, he has e-mail) All of them made with reinforced actions of Holland´s patern and amazing accuracy. Stocking shape is good but not as nice as the pure british shape. For good honest doubles: ARMAS EIBAR, S.L. (better known as LAURONA) http://www.laurona.com/ Hope it helps. The Preacher p.s: Spain is still the place to order a best quality for a fraction of the price, thou this fraction is less fraction with each passing day. |

Gentlemen: Thanks much for the info. I just acquired a Gaucher S/S 9.3x74R in Romorantin, France .... had no idea of its origins until finding this discussion. It is different from the doubles shown in the Bretton-Gaucher site, in that the receiver resembles the higher grade box-lock, though the trigger guard is a plain design, and the buttstock is straight/English. There is no "Bretton" stamping, only "Gaucher" .... and that on the rib only. If any of you can offer any information on this line on doubles, I would be very grateful. Alex |

Hi, You can add the following to your list too: UK Makers: Army and Navy CSL William Moore and Grey Price These are older makers not still producing but all made good quality guns. Of course Webley manufactured 90% of the box lock actions used by the better known London makers. In South Africa, B. W. Laubscher and Associates have built their first best grade sidelock ejector incorporating the finest lines of the best English makes. Not quite ready to fire yet, but not far off. Bennie Laubscher is the best bolt action rifle maker here and his guns are as good as you will find anywhere. There are a number of other gun makers here building doubles on Butch Cercie actions. |

www.kriebernegg.com ...not nearly as well known as some of the great-named rifle-makers but he is a rifle-maker (Ferlach-school, but no Ferlach taxes) with exceptionally great operational experience in the hunting-field on the .450 NE and .500 NE... ...makes very good doubles at moderate prices - if desired with very special tailored load/bullet/combinations for that special rifle to built... The only thing you have to live with: it can take some time for finishing such a rifle (but if you do not have pressure on time - this man can be THE ticket for your top-double...) |

I would like to include Siace as I have a very beautiful and functional double rifle from them that I bought last month. It is 45-70 as that is the caliber that I wanted. If you question the ability of the caliber, then look at garrett cartidges .com. So much more refined than a Merkel which I owned, but then aesthetics are a big deal to me. Look at their websie, www.siace.com. |

Hello Gentlemen, There is now a Double Rifle Maker in Australia! He has been working on guns for over 20 years, as a "regular joe", "punching the clock" as an employeed gunsmith. In that time he built himself a 9.3 x 74R Double Rifle and also some magazine rifles for friends. He has branched into business for himself in the last 3 years. alexbeer.com |

During the heyday of hunting the maximum number of double rifles was in India, Two famous British manufacurers who were based in Calcutta were 1. Mantons and 2. R B Roddha. In some cases they supplied doubles built on order in Birmingham or London and carrying their stamp, in other cases the doubles were often assembled and built with quality barrels from Germany. Both these firms folded on Indian independence. Weapons built by the Calcutta manufacturers were at par if not superior to those built by their London or Birmingham counterparts, they are collectors items today |

John, A few other German makers of yesteryear that I believe are not on the list as yet are: Greifelt Christoph Funk Wilhelm Brenneke Ok Brenneke didn't make very many guns compared to the others, supposedly only a little over 400 total guns to include driilings, shotguns, and bolt actions but he did make some double rifles Buchseman |

http://www.pedroarrizabalaga.net/ SPAIN These guys are very talented. I have two of their doubles. A real old fashioned company. |

Not quite Spanish though jcorry, barrels are made in Belgium where the gun is regulated, I believe Victor Sarasqueta (the old guy now long dead, not the modern company) and Mateo Mendicute (also long dead) are the only two Spaniards who made a complete double "in-house". Mendicute moved to AYA in 1952, in his 1930's catelogues he lists his double in .303 British, they exist, somewhere, in very limited numbers but I have never seen one, let alone seen one for sale best, Mike |

Is this usual? the extended rib? from the Max Ern site on the list, pics on site We are one of the very few companies that implement ideas and program in house. Subsequently every single part, starting by the barrel, will be made from the scratch into a blank and finally finished by a skilled tradesman. All Actions of our guns are newly calculated. If not requested different, all guns will be made with our durable Rising Bite 3rd Fastener. This form of extended rib enables us to make considerably more elegant Actions with the same strength. This will reduce weight and improves the balance of the gun. An extended rib is essential for a 100% lockup of the Action. Going without it will result in “Gapping” during the build up of pressure. This means, that for a very short time, a gap between the barrel and the breech will build up during the process of shooting. Under the backpressure of the present high power Rifle Cartridges the “Gapping” will not just put strain on the Action it will also result in a down flip of the muzzle. In particular with an oily chamber and the absence of an extended rib, the point of impact can considerably change downwards under the resulting extensive pressure on the breech. |

Australian Double Rifle maker = alexbeer.com I have been to his workshop, it is on a small scale, but everything is manufactured by hand from a block of steel. The rifles are box locks with no engraving. He will make them in 7 x 57 rimmed, .303, 9.3 x 74 rimmed, .375 H & H Flanged Magnum, .470 nitro & .500 nitro. I believe the turn around from order to finish is 18 months or was when I was there earlier this year. A knowlege-able nice bloke too boot. cheers |
