Small caliber doubles
|
Who has and uses smaller caliber double rifles? What caliber and made by who?
I have a 22 LR with matching 410 bbls. and at 1925 Westley Richards in 250/3000.
I get much more use of these at the ranch being as I can only go to Africa every four years or so.

My most used double rifle (while hunting) is a .303 Rigby. If I can hunt with a tenth of the shots fired on the range with the big ones I would die a happy man.

Personally think the smaller doubles feel alot nicer. I don't own any though.

I would love a .22 Hornet double rifle of good standard and balance. And would also love a medium calibre size side by side DR as well.
I DO HAVE a set of barrels in .30-06 for my U/O Tikka DR. They still have not been fitted to the action. I will get this done this year finally I think. I have needed the rifle/shotgun and not been able to send it off for a long period of time to a gunsmith in the past. I think they will be a fun alternative.

I am a huge fan of small to medium caliber double rifles. Among those I have three chambered in .303 Brit., one in .300 Win. Mag., one in .360 2-1/4" BPE, one in .400/.360 2-3/4" NE, and one in 9.3x74R.
In the past I have owned a Valmet o/u .30-06 (many deer killed), a .280 Flanged NE, a 7x57R, an 8x57JR, and a different 9.3x74R.
Don't know if I have remembered them all just sitting here at my computer. The small calibers are simply marvelous. There is nothing bad and very much good about them.

Don't knock the larger doubles - all double rifles have genuine beauty
Small - a Jean Van Malle (Belgian, in .450/.400, my smallest double), like a .410 shotgun
My largest (double) 8 bore H & H Ball Gun
.577 BPE by I Hollis
I would certainly still like a double in something like .360 - 2 3/4"

I have had the good fortune to handle both of CptCurls 303s they are fantastic.

My smallest is a Webley & Scott 32-40. I love the small doubles and probably 90% of all my hunting is done with either this rifle or the first double I ever owned, an Alex. Henry 360-2 1/4. The Henry is by far my favorite and has accounted now for in excess of 300 head of game. I believe a small double makes you really hunt because you don't have any power in reserve.
By using a small cal. double in thick cover on pigs, where your shots and visibility are less then 10 metres, you expose yourself to the potential of untold adventure. It's just a big game hunt scaled down.
My 'big' double these days is a 9.3x74R. I use it if I'm feeling lazy or the job at hand is deemed more serious.

Love that 8x72r. Can you create a thread just on it and post some pics of those pencils (cartridges)? Please?
Pretty sure someone on here has a .310 Double.
At the Australian Arms Auction there was a .360 No5. double for sale (last year i think?)

I have a Greener 310 double.
It is a really fun little gun but the bores are in pretty poor shape. Would make a super 22 Hornet but I would think lining and re-regulating could be difficult. I don't think I have read about how well that works
I recall someone here getting a much nicer example a few years ago.

I am jealous of the 7x57 Westley and the various 303's. Thanks everyone for sending photos. It is nice to know I am not alone. In Tulsa this time I saw a new Heym 30/30 double that would be neat for whitetail in Texas.

Century Arms [Saunders] did have a very nice Merkel 5.6x50 R a while back with scope for sale cased etc would have been great for small and medium game here !
