Merkel 140 Safari Versions

Hi guys,

I have wandered for some time about different versions of Merkel 140 Safari doubles. So far I have come up with 3 different versions:

- 140A, ordinary barrel forging, weight 10 lb. 10 oz. (470 N.E.)
- 140A 2, monoblock, weight 10 lb. 70 oz. (470 N.E.)
- 140A 2.1, monoblock, weight 11 lb. (470 N.E.)

Are there any others out there + are there any other differences beside ones allready mentioned (handling...) between those different versions?

I'd have to check mine to see what it is.

But I can tell you that different guns get sold in different countries as the original one's for Australia were ordered
as a specific type and specific stocks (Straight English).

So you might find them quite varied around the world
for different price points.

OK - have found out more - beside basic difference of barrel forging between 140A and 140A-2, looks like there is no difference between 2 and 2.1 but engraving (no weight difference?) + there is also 2.2:

Model 140-2 features standard arabesque engraving.
140-2.1 Engraved features full coverage hand engraved African game scenes.
140-2.2 Custom engraved models with octagon barrels, ordinary barrel forging.

Letter "E" means that rifle is equiped with ejectors.

93Mouse, the riflew you list as the 140A is actually the 140-2 Safari with Shoe-lump barrel set. All Merkel barrels are cold hammer forged! The difference is in the way they are put together!

The 140-2 Safari is a shoe-lump barrel set with only extractor, and non-auto safety
This is the same set-up as your 140 9.3X74R rifle without the ejectors and auto safety!

All the 140"A" rifles are Mono-block barrelsets but are now available with selective ejectors in the big bore rifles!

Re: Merkel 140 Safari Versions

I know this is an older thread, but I recently purchased a 2003 model 140-2, 470NE.
My question is, is there any difference in the lock work between any of the safari style rifles?
Also, if any of you have had your gun apart, what does the stock, through bolt attach to? Of the very limited photos I've seen on a Merkel action, I don't see a place to attach a screw. I was thinking of removing my stock and taking a look inside, but didn't want to mess anything up...
