Bailey Bradshaw DR in 6x70 mm Rimmed

I have been talking to Baily about his super little double rifles. Originally available in .22 rimfire and .22 Hornet.
I discussed something with a bit more oomph like a .22 Hi-Power or a 5.6x50 mm Rimmed. He suggested a 6x70R, and after a while it grew on me. More effective on medium/light game than the .22 Hi-power but similar performance with a heavier pill and a slightly larger calibre.
So the decision was made, a Bailey Bradshaw DR in 6x70R. (Edited to add: In the end the order was not made, but it would have been nice!)
Bailey's Damascus .22 Hornet
But because a .22 Hornet would be fantastic for hunting at home, perhaps a .22 Hornet set of barrels will be warranted as well?

Awesome choice John.
Might suggest putting a photo up of the cartridge
agaisnt some other well known one's for comparison.

.222 Remington
55 gr projectile at a muzzle velocity of 3000 fps
.223 Remington
55 gr projectile at a muzzle velocity of 3100 fps
.22-250 Remington
55 gr projectile at a muzzle velocity of 3600 fps
.220 Swift
55 gr projectile at a muzzle velocity of 3800 fps
5.6x52R / .22 Savage Hi-Power
71 gr projectile at a muzzle velocity of 2800 fps
6x70 mm Rimmed
90 gr projectile at a muzzle velocity of 2400 fps
.243 Winchester
100 gr projectile at a muzzle velocity of 2900 fps
While a slower velocity than many of the rounds shown above, it is very similar to the 5.6x52R and if a light 6mm bullet was used, eg 70 gr would probably have a similar velocity IMO. However the 90 gr bullet would be more effective on the lighter medium game animals.

Looks perfect for a light double.
Almost good enough for fallow ?
BTW - I saw the other thread with the picture of the 6x70R
after I had posted but it's still good to get a look at it
next to the others.

I have no doubt it will be capable of taking fallow and chital. Not all shots and all angles, but should be quite capable. It will certainly get tested out on fallow.
And probably perfect for hog deer and if it ever travels European roe deer.

Considering how much game has fallen to the .243 Win and that a lot of people are using the 6.8 SPC, looks like a winner.

actually that would be perfect, as i have a guest comming this year, if his calender permits it, and you are making the damascus one for him so it would be a bit of a fun shoot for us all

Peter, I don't think Bailey discussed a damascus action.
He did mention a colour case hardened action.

What options for the action are there? So NE members can have an input and help me choose.

The action and forend iron can be either 4140 steel for blued or French greyed finish, or made from 8620 for color case hardening. I won't make this one in damascus as the recoil is high enough that I won't take a chance on the damascus having an internal flaw resulting in failure of the action. I will build 22 hornets and rimfires in damascus, but nothing above them.
In my opinion, the final finish and engraving choice would dictate the material. Case colors are beautiful, but do fade and require care to keep them nice. They can't be touched up either. They can be redone, but it's a perilous and expensive prospect. Blueing and French greying can be redone without puting the action in peril.They can also be used in combination with different engraving styles. My choice would be the 4140 for a blued action with sculpted French greyed engraving......something with this look....(a dagger I made and engraved a couple of years ago)

I know this is not genuine Damascus, but Per Billgren of Damasteel AB in Sweden now has a new alloy that can be browned like traditional Damascus and which is suitable for modern firearms - barrels, parts etc as he says on this link. To copy and paste from there:
2x .y Low Alloy Tough Hardening Damascus Steel
Applications:
Hunting firearm barrels and parts for browning or blueing. Knife blades. Axes and other edge tools. Damascus forging including forge welding.
Properties:
Hardenable up to 55 HRC. Excellent toughness. Excellent forgeability and forge weldability. No corrosion resistance.
Just a suggestion as you gentlemen are planning a massterpiece.

The rib will be full on this one. I don't have a full rib on the little calibers because ammo varies so much in load and availability. Since Norma is the only manufacturer for the 6X70R, there is no reason to have adjustable regulation.

Maybe or maybe not. The 6x70R will definitely be handloaded for, and probably have a 90 gr load. Norma ammo will not be available here, at least at a decent price. But the Norma ammo will at least provide a starting point.
But also probably have some loads in the 60 to 75 gr weight range tried out as well.

The final word is certainly yours. The rifle can have a full rib if you wish.
Any idea on the steel you want the action built in? Final finish?

What a fantastic project John. Also, a fantastic cartridge for general use on most Australian game. At those velocities I have no doubt larger Australian game will be within its capabilities.
For my own interest, what rate of twist will be used in the barrels and what powders would be suitable to reload with ?
Please keep us updated (as no doubt we will).

I have a Krieghoff Teck combination gun in 12 gauge and the unusual rifle caliber of 7X75R SE vom Hofe. With a full length insert barrel in the shot barrel in caliber 6X52R Bretschneider, I have a close range/long range combination that's hard to beat.
The vom Hofe propels a 175 grain Sierra bullet at 850 mps. (2789 fps.) and the Bretschneider moves a 100 grain Nosler at 773 mps. (2536 fps.). The Bretschneider cartridge is simply the .22 Savage High Power (5.6X52R) necked up to 6mm or the .25-35 Winchester (6.5X52R) necked down. The vom Hofe is the 9.3X74R cartridge necked down.
This combination gives me a choice of loads for either long range or short range and cartridges which are perfectly adequate for the locat whitetails.

Sounds great, xausa. Perhaps a 95gr. SST for the 6mm due to the lower speed?
