Hi Folks I may have the opportunity in coming weeks to lay my hands on a new Verney double. I dont have any experience of them but they seem to be pretty solid and nicely made. Does anyone else have any tips if this is a good thing or not?? Thinking about 470 over a 450 3 1/4 in a case coloured finish over the coin finished jobs Cheers and thanks Matt |

Matt Sounds like you are getting tempted by the double barrel dark side. Can't comment on the V-C but I'd go for the .450, more choice in projectiles. But either will provide the goods and a .470 is more likely to have factory ammo available around the world. |

Tempted?? Hell I have always wanted one!! Just getting sick of waiting around for Marrakai to leave me one of his in his will!!! |

Go 450 Heaps of bullet choices, many of them very good cheap game hunting bullets too! Cheers Tinker |

Hi Matt , yes 450NE is good/better mate but only in a rifle that is the right size ie small/light/handy , if the same size as 470NE action , get a 500NE 3in much more smash than both ,will make a better back up rifle ,wink, wink & hopefully the barrel will not fall off like the 458Winny |

There is enough bullet choice in the 470...Woodleigh. The 470 hits harder that a 450NE but the 450 penetrates better. 470 Brass is available at a reasonable price from Norma and Hornady. 450 is available from Hornerber and Hornady. 450 can be built on a lighter action due to its slender case. You could always flick a coin... |

Matt I am very impressed with the V-C guns. Major problem for me was getting over the French thing. I own a V-C .577 and have ordered a bespoke .500 which is due in April. I have found the V-C's to kick less than the other Continental makes I have owned. The V-C guns have been cleaning up at the Vintagers competition the last two years. In choosing between the .470 and .450, I would pick the .450. Just my opinion. Back to the bespoke option, if you can hold tight and wait a few months you can get a gun built to your dimensions with your chosen options. I ordered my .500 to weigh 11 1/2# to 12# with rounded action and 26" bbls. and a bunch more custom touches. Ken Bush at KEBCO is the U.S. importer and an all around good guy. Hope this helps. Don |

If you want to order a boxlock I don't think you could do better than V-C. I have a custom made V-C set and it was well worth the wait. I found myself in a similar conundrum regarding which caliber to order. So I decided to order mine with two sets of barrels. The gun is built on one action size so, depending on the combination ordered, you might have either a second set of lighter barrels for a heavier frame or a second set of heavier barrels for a lighter frame. But, unless the difference is extreme, I think the benefits are worth it. My gun happens to be a 9.3x74R/7x65R set. It balances well with either barrel set and is neither too heavy nor too light. The scope is for the 7x65R and the 9.3x74R barrels have a flip up "night" sight on the front. My suggestion is that you order a gun to your specifications. I just don't enjoy shooting anything heavier than a 450. So I think a 450 with a second barrel set in a smaller bore like 450/400 would be a very versatile choice. You can set up each barrel set for the kind of shooting you will be doing. |

Verney Carron makes a fantastic product for a fair price! They will make it to your specs in almost any caliber including the big 600NE. BR |

Getting close....getting VERY close!!! Looks like it will be the 450 3 1/4 over the 470. Personally I would have rathered the 470 but there isnt a lot of difference - just a few foot pounds and a bit more frontal area. The main reason I picked the 450 was that I just couldnt wait for a fitted gun and while the 470 Ken had looked great I just couldnt get it to fit me. The coin finished 450 fitted perfectly, even though they were all cut to the same specs, so I am going to go with that one!!! Hooray!!! Thanks for your comments and advice guys... MG |

Sounds great, will you have for next weeek end??? For a looksee??? |

No mate sorry - wish I did!! Prolly a 2 month wait to get the gun out of the USA.... compared to a nine month wait to get the fitted version... I took the 2 month option!! I just wanted it for this hunting season. Also Ken the VC agent in USA is coming to do a hunt with us this year - I'm hoping to do some promo for the guns during the hunt. Ken is bringing his VC 577 I think... that will be cool!! I think Ken is a member here too... MG |

Quote: At one of the Melbourne shows I got talking to the Hornady agent and he told me they would be bringing in the NE range. Not sure if that was just ammo or cases as well. I can ask John C if he has any Hornerber available. Its great quality but quite pricey. |

spent some time with them at sci while i set up a booth for zoli nice work they had a nice 577 and a 600 there and they will be bringing out a 375 rimmed soon they were a nice change and very easy to talk to |

Quote: At some of the shows Bertram often has a seconds box, which still function OK. I bought more than a couple hundred of .450's from him to add to the 60 I had at full price. |

Hornady brass for the 450 NE 3 1/4 can be found at Cabelas and Grafs Reloading supplies. If you find a coupon for Cabelas they have the best prices as I just bought 5 boxes from them. Midway is the only one that I know of at the present who has both the Hornady dies and shell holder (#54) in stock. |

Hey Snowwolfe, Matt might need a "Care" package sent, the US is really giving the companies in the US a hard time and they can't Export even to an allie..... Cheers, Jeff Gray |

Quote:Sorry I meant in OZ!! Thanks for the help guys... can I get a care package of UP brass from the USA without a B709 ?? Dont really want to send brass with the gun on the same form and docket... just complicates things.. Cheers Matt |

Quote: I would be more inclined to look at .450 with a set of 9.3X74 barrels. I had thought to recommend the .375 flanged but ammo is harder to come by and the 9.3X74 is nearly the same with more ammo choices. I would get both fitted with a QD scope. Bill |

Quote:I wouldnt get a scope for the 450 but a 375/9.3 would sure be a great combo!! I've only got six or seven rifles in that calibre range - whats another one going to matter??Quote: |

Well it's official... I'm the proud owner of a Verney-Carron Azur Safari Standard 450 three'n'a'quarter.... woohoo!!! Now the long wait to get the gun here. I'd just like to say that Ken is a really good guy to deal with and from what I can tell these guns are very reliable and pretty fair quality for the price... http://www.verney-carron.us/ |

As many have mentioned the .450 has lots of projectile choices. That is why I bought a .450 no2 ten years ago. It shoots Hornady 500-grain bullets into 2 inches at 50 yards over a standing rest. I buy dozens of boxes of these at gun shows from folks who bought a .458 or .460 and it kicked too much and they sell everything on the cheap! For what it is worth--I have examined dozens of vintage and new doubles when researching my book on the .600s. I think the VC is the best bang for the buck in a new double today. That is not to put the others down--they are all good--but the locking system on the VC won't shoot loose AND where can you get a new .600 for less than 23K? I like and only own vintage British doubles but if I were to buy a new one for utility use the VC would be my choice. Lots of doubles and double info on my website. Enjoy. Cal |

Quote: I must admit that the same thing was on my mind before deciding to order my V-C, but I have to believe that of the small percentage of the French population that would have anything to do with us it would be a gunmaker. I'm at peace thinking this is the case. I did change my brand of Scotch, though. |
