A $10,000 Double Mistake??

I have been looking for a 450/400 double for a while now--

Can't swing a Heym at 15K with present finances and Merkel/Chapuis haven't produced a 450/400 yet--I would love to have a new Merkel in that caliber if it didn't weigh a bunch and handle like swinging a railroad tie!! Guess if they tapered their barrels on the same 20 gauge size action they could still get a 9 pound gun?

Anyway I may have found an alternative--

An Antonio Zoli Over/Under 450/400 for $10,000---
It can be scoped and appears to be a quality gun with ejectors--

Opinions??

Re: A $10,000 Double Mistake??

I spoke to the US importer and was told the 450/400s were just coming out, and that they would be in relatively short supply for a while. I went with a Krieghoff in the 450-400 3" a few months ago when they first came out, and have been extremely pleased with the resulting gun. They sell for about $1500 more than the price you list, but I am happier with a SXS in this caliber than an O/U and while I have no doubt that Zoli builds a good product, the Kriege has been around in the configuration for a while and it is simply a new caliber, not a whole new product. The Zoli has not been produced in anything larger than a 9.3X74R.

In the end, its no doubt just personal choice. Dave

The Kreighoff is interesting indeed! How does yours handle?

How do you find the safety/decocker? Considering you have other doubles, any issues with it? Or not? Thanks.

No, its pretty idiot proof, which is fortunate since I am surely an idiot. It takes all of about ten seconds to get used to and is fairly slick in operation and quite convenient. I think the 'problems' associated with it are more perception than reality, or assumptions by those who have either not used the system or simply tried it out at a show. I find no issues switching up and back to my 'normal' DRs. Dave

Very nicely, and very nicely balanced. Shoots quite well. I have stuck with the Hornady loads, which is what it was regulated with and the accuracy is as claimed and as shown on the test target that comes with each gun. Nice wood and nice finish as well.

By the way, the wood runs from very nice to just ordinary. I think there are several offered at the Cabela's site which illustrates my point. If you are going to buy, pick out the one with nicer wood, they are out there. Dave

I find it interesting regarding your comments on Krieghoff--as you hear all sorts of comments regarding the safety..personally, I plan to purchase one at SCI in Reno in '09 in 500 Nitro..to use for an upcoming elephant hunt--have looked them over and like how they feel plus they are not an old english gun so they could be readily replaced if broken or stolen..IMHO....

I'd suggest anything over 9.3x74R opt

for SxS configuration. It's just my

opinion. I'll bet www.deltagunshop.com

can rebore any double .375 H&H belted

rimless to 450/400. I know Merkle has

375's in their line up.
