What could I build on a hammer Lancaster shotgun action?

A very good friend who is an RFD in the UK has found me a Charles Lancaster 12 bore hammer shotgun with Damascus barrels. The barrels are pitted internally but look fine on the outside. I am wondering, though, if the action could be used to build a double rifle on? I am not an expert in any sense and would have to get a professional gunsmith to do the work. It is also something that would take time - the gun is still in the UK and it has to be imported here first though that should be no problem because of its age. I also need to think a lot about the expense involved because I a an adult student once more, preparing for the "final examination."

I would be grateful for all suggestions/sdvice here. Thanks in advance and good hunting everyonbe!

Mehul,

A certain well-liked gent on our forums normally asks for photos when replying to an inquiry like this one.

Yeah, just grab y'camera and slip across to the UK, mate!
Curl & I are waiting...! (drums fingers on desk-top...)

My suggestion would be a 12-bore BP paradox, or a 16-bore nitro paradox, or even a 20-bore nitro DR!

..and all jokes aside, yes, photos please!

Slightly reamed inside, 20 or even 24 bore rifled liners could be installed. These could be aquired from many of the barrel makers in the States - Moody, Ed Rayle etc. They will make any bore size and any twist desired. I can see a superb round ball double rifle in the making.
; The double 12 bore round ball gun as suggested by Jabalihunter also holds promise.
; Some time ago, Les Bauska used to make .50 cal liners for 10 bore barrels. They were turned to fit the existing chambers and were a 'drop-in' and glass or solder arranglement. The same could be done in 20 bore for this 12. The added weight would be about perfect. LYman's shotshell loading books from #2 through #5 have data, however in deferance to the age and posibly BP action, black powder loads could easily (more easily than smokeless) be developed for the double 20 rifle.
; 320gr. round balls in 20 bore, on up to 450gr., .54 cal. bullets that fit normal plastic shot-cups could be used.
: Oh yes, this gun shows promise for the future. It all depends on what is desired. The 20 bore rifle for this shotgun kinda holds dear to me at this time.

Why not one of the classic black powder chartridges like the 500 BP Express? You can get "Nitro for Black" loading info for most of these artridges so you do not have to deal with the mess of black powder.
