Re: Have your Rigby refinished in Zambia ?

I actually got those pictures from the gunsmith who took them and who "discovered" the rifle in Zambia and I wrote that short piece. The rifle had been used to shoot hippo by the local tribal chief (I have no idea how he came to own it) for meat and spent considerable time under water, probably to hide it from the authorities.

A sad end for a between-the-wars Rigby sidelock ejector .470! I have actually seen a WR droplock .425 that suffered a similar fate, although not quite as bad as the Rigby.

Re: Have your Rigby refinished in Zambia ?

Reminds me of when i was in Zambia in the early 1990s. In the Lusaka police station was a whole room of old guns from the colonial era - with many very good names, but all had stored since independence with no care whatsoever. And then working up in the Eastern province with the locals it was amazing what came out - one of the local chiefs had a h&h magazine rifle in 375 with foresight crudely brazed on - he tried to sell it to me - i declined politely (there was also brazing on the bolt lugs).

And there also some beautiful rifles - one of tobacco farmers had a 416 Rigby with side mounted scope, plus a similar 275.

And the a large number of old BSA, Enfield andNorton Motorbikes along with old landrovers.
