The Purdey "200 Year Battery of Nine" - commissioned by Ahmed577. |
I donīt know what Ahmed677 does for a living but if he wants a gun cleaner, Iīm his man |
OMG ! I wonder if Ahmed577 would like to adopt me as a son ? I really am beginning to appreciate Purdey as a Double Rifle maker, never liked them before as I really didn't look at them, thinking they were more Shotgun builders ! What is the deal with that interim mount on the 375 ? |
What is the battery of nine? From a PDF Ahmed sent to me: 5.6x52R Double .300 H&H Flanged Double .303 British Double .375 H&H Flanged Double .500 Nitro Express Double .600 Nitro Express Double 10-Bore Shot & Slug - Side by Side Rifled Choke 10-Bore Shotgun Side by Side 28 Gauge Side by Side shotgun |
His battery is incomplete, there is no .577 in it. |
Impressive... Ripp |
Bugger.....Mike you bet me to the cleaner's position!!! Would be a job in itself just to do that after a nice day's shoot! Ahmed577 you are one lucky, lucky bloke to get that lot - must have been a hard decision not to get a .577 & then get a .600 instead! Cheers 93x64mm |
Lovely. Congratulations. I am looking forward to seeing the completed rifles and guns. However more progress pics would be appreciated. Cheers, Chris |
Now THAT is about the coolest "in progress" shot ever! I recently made a play for a Purdey double rifle and then the seller says "I think I will just keep it"!! Talk about letting the wind out of my sails! This grouping of Purdeys is incredible enough, but to have a 10bore rifled choke gun in there! That just has to be the gun of the year from any maker IMO. BTW, has Purdey ever made a rifled choke gun before? |

Dear members I just spent 30 minutes answering all queries and could not post.i can't get the hang of these contraptions. |
That's Ok Ahmed577 (or should I say Dad?), just PM me the adoption lawyers details & we can take it from there |
This short message & one on boss 5.6 x50R scope seemed to work. God knows why. Will try again in a few days. |
Ahmed577, If you use the Quick Reply box it will time out well before 30 minutes. Probably 5 to 10 minutes after opening the thread, after that it will time out. Two options: 1. If the QUICK REPLY times out You can RECOVER what you posted by using the BACK button, either through your browsers menu or on some browsers using the right button on your mouse and hitting back on the left arrow. Your post should be recovered. Then you might want to copy the typed text to ensure it is saved. By using your mouse to highlight it and using the mouse and COPY or COPY via the browsers menu. Use the REFRESH button on the menu or via your mouse. The quick reply will be reset. Your typed text SHOULD still be there. If not PASTE it again as you COPIED it earlier to save it for this purposes. Then hit CONTINUE and it all should still work. 2. Normal REPLY option An easier way is to use the REPLY button on the last post or the post you wish to reply to. This will not time out and you can take 30 minutes to make the reply without the problems and fixes needed above. for example above the text in my post is EDIT REPLY QUOTE QUICK REPLY Use the REPLY in the post, not the QUICK REPLY or the QUICK REPLY at the bottom of the thread and you should be fine. |

Thankyou John I will try again. (1) need to be pretty middle aged and a lady of course to apply for job as gun cleaner. (2) need to qualify as a gun cleaner before adoption would be considered. (3) already own a 577 built new by H&H in 1990 engraved by Coggan with scenes of Ahmed the great Kenyan bull elephant. (4) battery of 9 consists of a 22 hornet rook rifle s-n 31022, this gun is not pictured as nothing to show at time of photo. 10 bore listed twice should only be once s-n 31010 built as a rifle choked gun 27 inch barrels with extra set of 32 inch smooth bore barrels. PURDEY called their paradox style a rifled choke gun. I don't know how many they built or whether they built a 10 bore. I have a friend with a 12 bore rifled choked gun. They have not built a rifle choked gun or a rook rifle for a long long time. (5) 375 rifle is not scoped I guess the scope pictured is a mule for zeroing in. (6) the accoutments ( camping gear, handguns etc ) excite me very much all sanctioned by purdey. I would like to mention to members that the boss and purdey batteries are a tribute to all followers of a wonderful art and sport. I own some great older guns and if it wasn't for those people who loved the art I would have never had the opportunity to enjoy my life the way I do now. I might add that I wass born a hunter first. |
Well Sarg - looks like we lucked out old mate! Nice to hear Ahmed that the will be used hunting & not just safe queens. Will certainly be good to see progress on them all as they are getting built Cheers 93x64mm |

"(1) need to be pretty middle aged and a lady of course to apply for job as gun cleaner. (2) need to qualify as a gun cleaner before adoption would be considered." Oh well I see, I'm not offended, I could possibly pass two of the criteria, but a sex change is out I'm afraid ! Well done, very funny of you. Yes 9.3X64 it seems we are out of luck, all over really . Very awesome line up you have there & yes will be great to see them done & used more so ! Thank you for sharing them with us mortals . |
I am pricing up the sex change, used to have a .500 Holland double, does that count ? best, Mike |
Thanks Ahmed577, Will make the change to the description. I am keen to know what you intend to use these rifles for? Other than the reasons of adding to the legacy of past vintage rifles which you mention, and the "just because" reasons we all have, do you have any particular purposes in mind for the batteries individual rifles? Perhaps elephant for one, or of course water buffalo for several, etc ? Several "rook" double rifles in the line up: - Boss 5.6x50R; - Purdey .22 Hornet; - Purdey 5.6x52R. These are really cool IMO. Rarely do we see double rifles in these smaller chamberings these days. So it is excellent to see some being made again. Do you have any particular uses in mind? Kangaroos perhaps? The .22 Hornet I am keen to see when it gets going and is eventually finished. I was keen to acquire a newly made double rifle from one of our members here on NE, he is posting on this thread too . But the Police got in my way and refused and delayed approvals several times. During the delay the member wisely sold it for a far better price than I was going to pay! Well done by him. So I am looking for a nice .22 dr myself. Unfortunately Purdey is out of my price range. In fact I like the idea of all of these .22 DRs you are having made. Very keen to see more photos of any and all of these rifles and the others gun you are having made. |
This battery of Purdeys is just awesome. My favourite of the lot is the .600....I can only hope that you intend to hunt elephant the hard way...and shoot several big tuskers with it..! What a privilege to shoot elephant with such a rifle..! I am pretty sure Purdey would want it that way...after talking to employees of the top marks I know they hate their guns to become safe queens.. If I had the money I would have done something similar... As for Purdey quality, I have a Purdey game gun, 12/65, 28" barrels, ejectors. That gun is on its 3rd milennium, made 1896 and re-proofed for nitro april 1913.. Its is still thight as a swiss vault door and the ejectors are perfectly timed. I enjoy it for grouse hunting in our mountains.. Being 119 years old it is still technically modern compared to other SxS and O/U guns of today. Once again, this Purdey battery must be THE most magnificent ever ordered from this maker and I sincerely hope you will admit us pics when all are completed.. |
Awesome, just awesome! I'm green. Curl |

What a killer project. By it self each gun is Unique. Apparently Ahmed577 likes Purdey and does something about it. My saluts and respects to someone to where dreams isnīt restricted to the mind only... If it was me I would get a cabinetmaker with royal warrants to make up a cabinet with etched glasses etc + the-monthly-Purdey-guncleaner-subscription. But that is just me...hahaha. |
What can I say that would do these works of functional art justice. I am envious but glad some one is forefilling their dreams. |
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing. |
What a great project! I'm especially interested to see how the 10bore evolves. Will there be hand loading tools and a bullet mould/sizer included in the kit? Cheers Tinker |
He decided not to go with the loading tool and the bullet mould as he thought they were a bit on the pricey side best |
Tinker, yes all the tools etc will be included. Mike Bailey, they will cost my marriage if the cost is found out. I am starting to get excited about the finished project. I think the Boss battery ( project started 10/2007 ) will be completed about the same time as the purdey battery. Nitro forum will have a complete introduction soon. Thankyou for the interest. |
Ahmed577 I await the completion of your respective battery's with great anticipation. Of course if you need a hand in shooting them, I am at your command Best wishes, Chris |
Sweet Jesus, there's a Boss set too!!!!!!?????? You are a man of taste! |
I'm lost for words...... I hope you have the opportunity to do some very hard hunting with each one of these rifles. Love Purdy doubles, you don't see enough of them. No .400 or .450 bore? Thankyou for sharing. |
Thanks Ahmed577 I very much look forward to seeing the bullet casting and sizing tools. Cheers Tinker |

I must say that in my 18 years of using the internet, this is absolutely the best gun related post I've ever seen. Over many years I've been lucky enough to have handled and shot several doubles by Purdey and Holland & Holland, been to both factories, became acquainted with some people who worked for them, and never missed a chance to drop by whenever I was in England to check their latest creations, the latest of which being the stunning bicentennial trio at Audley House in June 2014, even though the style of decoration chosen for that .470 wasn't exactly my cup of tea. Despite H&H being a more prolific rifle maker, I've come to personally like Purdey's rifles more and find them to have a distinct edge in fit and finish quality, balance, and I like the square shape of the action side bolsters more than the "wavy" one in H&H rifles. I also like how Purdey's rifles come standard with some intricate design features such as disc set strikers, gas vents (false screws in the back of fences), sideclips for barrels, and of course the complex Beesley action with the assisted opening system being integral to the mechanism. That assisted opening of a Purdey always felt more positive than H&H's design, and although it makes it slightly harder to close the action of a Purdey when still new, this effect almost disappears after the rifle had been used for a while and the spring broken in, leaving you with a weapon that closes normally but opens with a beautiful "assertiveness" for the lack of a better word. Congratulations on that stunning set of what I believe to be the finest firearms ever created, and wish you enjoy them in good health. P.S. I have never seen a Boss rifle in person, so I'll be looking forward to hearing your impressions once you receive that Boss battery. |

Nice comments Adrian. Now you have me wanting a Purdey! |

Lovely. I had the privilege of handling a Purdey 600 double in the white some years ago, very handy rifle. However, not much use here in the Sutherland, Scotland where red deer are the biggest quarry. |

Ahmed's post reminds me I have some of his photos to post! |

Von gruff no one more interested than I on progress of boss and purdey batteries. Boss battery of "6" 3 now complete. Boss 20b o/u 28b s/s & 300h&h bolt take-down rifle completed. These 3 guns were ordered in years 2007 & 2008. Were finished within 3 years of order date. 410 o/u ordered 4/09 they hope will be complete 4/16. 375 - 303 double rifle & 5.6 x 50r o/u rifle may form part of my estate to finalise. Purdey battery of "9" well underway. Many pictures on purdey club website. I am incapable of sending pictures for some reason. Others will help me. Part of the purdey battery included a landrover as official carriage it arrived in Australia this month. Thankyou for your interest. |

Amazing! Thanks for the update. I missed Johns post of the photos! That 600 looks close to finish? |
600 completed this week. 4 to go. I have not seen any completed photos of 600. Am hunting a lot over next 6 months. Will report when I can. Hope nitro will post some photos. |

If I get the gun cleaners job it's Michelle. A question is the Boss battery going to have an O/U double rifle ? I have never seen one in the flesh, I think they have only made less than 100 in total, best, Mike |
.400 member. Boss battery has 1 o/u rifle. A 5.6 x50r. Not a fan of o/u heavy calibers. This is a pot rifle only. I understand less than 10 o/u rifles have been built by boss since 1909 year of inception. |
Just 10 !! Blimey. At the sound of being called sacriligeous, my first double was an O/U Dumoulin in .470 and I liked it a lot, that gape and reloading speed is, in my opinion a load of old b*lls. If I had the wonga I would love a Boss O/U in .500 NE , best, Mike |

Hey Mike! I'm a fan of large bore u/o's too! Seen this one? https://www.guntrader.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Lang-Joseph_Rifle_For-Sale_141023105507001 |

I think that is based on a Browning action is it not ? best |

.400 reason for not being fan of o/u big caliber rifle is primarily having nil exposure to them. Having always wanted a boss o/u rifle a small caliber will enable the pleasure of using it every day if I wish. Thankyou for your interest &a thoughts. |

It is indeed a Browning action with a modified top tang. Waidmannsheil. |

Wow. Fabulous rifles and guns. I am in awe of the talented people that, with their individual specializations, come together to create such functional masterpieces. The clamshell foresight hood on No. 31600 is amazing. Thanks you, Chris |

Back to the excellent singles, double rifles and shotguns soon, but every battery needs a pair of revolvers. Anderson Wheeler Mk VII's Plans for engraving. Engraving plan images removed on the request of the engraver. New plans are being formulated with a different style. These will be displayed when done in due course. |

Impressive! And still being added to. What a water buffalo too! |

I think we're all just gobsmacked at the scope of this whole project! One rifle is a feat to do - but 9 individual pieces! Ahmed577 you are a legend! How these 'pieces' have come together is now stunningly obvious, you have tastes that we mortals can only dream about. The timber alone is just fantastic & the metal/engraving work is WOW, just how I imagine a real double(s) would look like. Never handled one in the flesh. No wonder you get a Rover to cart them about, but then begs the question...which one to use first?? Artistry in wood & metal, absolutely beautiful pieces each & every one, lets hope that you get to use them sooner rather than later - even if it takes time to get perfection. Please keep sending the photos. 93x64mm |

Wow. Just wow! Love the pair of revolvers. I really like the detailed plan of the engraving layout. Takes a lot of time but is worth it. Aren't the revolvers 45LC? Cheers, Chris |

Quote:Quote: Yes any licensed law abiding person can own a handgun. However generally they must be an active pistol target club member attending usually at least six competitions per year (in SA anyway) backed up by the club's report each license renewal. Other uses can include some states allow for example professional hunters to be able to use a handgun for backup purposes, eg I believe the NT and Qld. Some states allow farmers and other farm workers to use a handgun for farm use, the properties generally must be quite large, I forget the SA minimum, in the tens of thousands of hectares. Other states may have different standards. The reasoning here is it is easy to carry a handgun when doing farm work, and harder to have a long arm. On large properties it may not be feasible to return to the homestead to get a rifle, eg to put down stock. Security company staff, but only during their working hours. Handguns can not be owned for self defence, or self protection. If a eg a break in occurs, a firearm may be appropriate for defending oneself depending on the circumstances. Handguns can not be owned for hunting. Maybe the NT ? Someone can correct me if I am incorrect. The 2003 handgun "steal off" (buy back) banned handguns less than a certain length. Also restricted most handguns greater then .38 calibre. Some sports are still permitted large calibres eg metal Silhouette, and "Action Match" competitions. We would very much like to see IPSC again have access to .40's and .45's. Will see if there is any positive or negative progress in the next few months when the National Firearms Review recommendations are finally released. Magazines of ten shots or less. All due to the excuse of one Chiness foreign student using a handgun to shoot between three and five persons in 2003. Another excuse used by the gun banning vultures ... But lets not dwell on laws in this thread, and instead enjoy Ahmend's wonderful battery. About to post the next installment. |

Boss 5.6x50mm R Under & Over double rifle Smallest caliber Boss o/u ever built. 5.6x50R. S-N 10356 part of the battery of 6xBoss guns, will be 10 years from start to finish. |
The first double rifle I shot was a 5.6x50 mm Rimmed in Under and Over. The other barrel was actually a .22 Magnum. The 5.6x50R barrel was capable on three shot/one hole accuracy. The .22 Magnum about 30 mm at 100 metres. The rifle was brought to Australia by a German guy living near the East German border at the time, and worried about a war. Brought stuff over to Australia for a second home, just in case. This rifle brand was "Frankonia" so obviously the retail chain had some rifles made up for their own branding. Wore a very inappropriate 4-10x50mm scope in see through mounts. Very hard to shoot accurately as the scope was way to high to use the cheek pad. *** I think this 5.6x50 mm R under and over Boss will be an extraordinary rifle and well worth it, and useful on all sorts of smaller game species. |

My dad had Purdeys, they're amazing guns but my dream battery would be 4 Boss O/Us: 28g, 12g, 9.3x74R and a 500 NE! |

Ahmed577 passed on these images to me from BOSS of his latest Boss double rifles on being finished, prior to professional photos being taken. Plus the targets of three rifles. Ahmed577 can tell you about the rifle and targets. 1a 1b 2a 2b 3. - 5.6x50R, .303 & .375 |

Stunning battery. As a mortal I have saved up enough now to afford the dream. |

From past experience should tighten groups by min 30 percent with handloads. Happy with factory load grouping on PURDEY and Boss guns. PURDEY 10 Bore choked barrels ( paradox ) had to be hand loded for testing. Hope to get 10 percent improvement on it. |

Stunning project for sure. I would like to hear particulars on the 10b Paradox. I have a bit of experience with an original. Curl |

Cptcurl could be 1 year before I can report on 10 bore. From start to finish this will be a 12.5 year project with boss 600 sxs extending it to 17.5 years. |

Ahmed, Patience is quite a virtue. As nobody makes 10b Paradox ammunition at present, have you decided what ballistics to specify for regulation? My 10b was built for the 8 dram load, which used a 2 ounce (875 grain) bullet in a 2-7/8" thin brass case, resulting in approximately 1500 fps. I don't think there was much change in ballistics when the round was adapted to nitro powder. I am buying cases from Track of the Wolf, but I see they don't export these. https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/1210/11/SHOT-SHELL-10-2-78 I'll be interested as this project continues to develop. One last question: Why would you have Purdey build this rather than Holland & Holland, the traditional Paradox maker? Curl |

Have a friend with a 12 bore rifle choked gun built by PURDEY 100 years ago. As I was wanting PURDEY guns and they agreed to build it I proceeded. It is built on a rifle action with a set of smooth bore barrels for goose shooting. I have a 12 bore holland shot gun with a set of paradox barrels and a holland rifle 375 short with a set of 28 bore paradox barrels. It may take a while and I will report on loads and regulation etc. |

You certainly will be well-equipped! I am anxious to see the 10b Purdey for sure. Curl |

Next instalment ... First as posted elsewhere. Boss .303 side by side round action. The first image with scope. The second image of his newly made rifle with an older side by side also in .303. Exquisite! Enjoy. |

And the .375. I'm in love with this one ... |

An earlier Boss .470, photos also supplied. Not part of Ahmed's project from the earlier inventory. But enjoy anyway. |

27 28 6 years and 6 months. It has been many decades since Purdey built a rifle choked gun. Probably close to 100 years. This gun built on a rifle action has an extra set of smooth bore barrels (32) . The rifle choked barrels are 27. It is a 10 bore and comes with a mould for the slugs ( looks just like the old Holland paradox mould). The 300 h&h double is near complete (7 years). The Purdey Battery Of 9 I will be in the bush next year. Both the 10 bore and 300 h&h are missing from this photo. Project started in 2010. 29 30 |

So much fantastic design and craftsmanship. Beautiful materials and process. It would be really nice to see detailed accounts of the craftspeople involved in the production of these pieces. Views into their lives and training, their benches and tools - a tour through the production etc would be amazing. I've seen the video productions from some of the makers. They're all fascinating. I wish there was more of a view into the day-to-day state of the craft. Roland Baptiste keeps a relatively current journal of his works and his art on his Facebook, Joel Dorleac posts here from time to time with images from his business, Dewey Vicnair with his rising bite rifle and gun builds... I'd like to see a more detailed look, much more frequently into the workshops of these top builders. That would be great! Cheers Tinker |

I'm a true admirer of these realisations of the highest quality. However I will allow myself a remark about the scope mount on the wonderful little Boss O/U 5.6x50R double rifle. I sincerely believe that this masterpiece deserved much better than this modern claw mount with its inelegant extended rear mount and Allen head screws. Ahmed will forgive me but I could not resist noting this incongruity ... really sorry. DORLEAC www.dorleac-dorleac.com |

Question; there is two tools placed in case near turnscrews whose looks more or less like butter knifes. I donīt recocnize the work they are made for ? IMO these scope mounts fit quite well with the modern scope. I have seen case coloured mounts with similar modern scope and I donīt like that kind of compination because the scope then looks very lonely and even ugly. |
The two tools are indeed DEXTER Beaver skinning knives. Cheap to buy and for me I have never had a better skinning fleshing knife. When skinning crocodile you are forever in dirt and mud. I find these knives very easy to sharpen. |

Dorleac I agree with your sentiments on the scope mounts and screws on the Boss 5.6x50r. The enormity of the Boss and Purdey projects is hard for others to understand. 13 or 15 years it has taken and all I want is to sit and use them in the bush. |

Thanks Colin. While on it, a list of your Boss project please? Your firearms projects are on a pharonic scale and timeline! PS I need some images of your Anderson-Wheeler Mk VII's as well. I was wondering if they were ever coming, and if A-W was actually turning them out. With the changes there. Stuart telephoned me maybe in January. I only got a message and had not rang back to have a chat. I wondered what was happening at A-W's with the new ownership, plans, new firearms etc. Hopefully all going well. . |

Ahmed...what a project.. I am particulary facinated with the 2 .600īs. I wonder if it was Your Purdey .600 I handeled in the long room Autumn 2017..along with a .470 and .375 Flanged..? I sincerely hope that you will hunt bull elephant with at least one of the .600īs... The build quality at Purdeyīs...well I hunt with an 1896 Purdey game gun..still 100% tight, ejectors throwing 100% alike, etc...it is a privilege to hunt with these weapons.. |
