Double air rifle

Hello,
I've been a member for a while but haven't posted until now.
I want to show you my long time project, double air rifle I have been building since 2008.
It all started with CAD design.

Parts machining

Machining and soldering the barrels.

Barrels cleaned up and fitted to action.

Slowly coming together.

Forend and stock work.

And that's it so far. I hope it isn't inappropriate to post this here, it really isn't a nitro express, but should be good to stop a charging bunny.

Fascinating project is right!
Beautiful little rifle!

The reservoir must be inside the butt and is filled through the butt plate?

How many shots to a fill at what speed?

Amazing Engineering and superb machining. Something very different, it would have to be the only one in the world. Did you do all the work yourself or did you have a machine shop do it for you.
Fantastic.

Have the sear and main springs been wire cut. If so what grade of spring steel did you use and which way did you orientate the grain.

Yes, the reservoir is inside the butt and filled through the butt plate.
I have no idea how many shots, power will be around 20J (15fpe), as this is the power limit we have here.

Waidmannsheil,
Yes, I did all the machining myself. Sears are made from OCR12WM steel, and mainsprings from the old car leaf spring. They were not wire cut, but heated and bent and filed to shape and then heat treated.

Amazing! You are a true talent!
Please keep us up to date on the final stages.

I am sure that I am not the only one here thinking... "big bore double air rifle, mmmmmm"
Do you have any limitations where you live regarding bore size or projectile weight?

Re: Double air rifle

15fpe - I have not seen mention of cailbre - ie: 4.5mm or 5.5mm?

Normal pellet in .22 (5.5) will run 620fps to 660fps depending on pellet weight. Pellets above 18gr. will have to be moving even slower.

In .177, over 850 to 900fps will work at that power limit depending on pellet weight. 900fps (14.75fpe) makes for a really flat trajectory over 60yards with an 8.2gr. pellet.

Re: Double air rifle

It is .22 caliber. We a are also limited with velocity, max 200 meters per second, so .22 is the best choice to come close to both limits.

YES - perfect for 18 to 19gr. pellets.

How many shots do you expect from a fill - 200, 250, or 300Bar? 200 Bar = 2,900psi and 300 Bar, which would be good for more shots = 4,350psi.

Will you carry a carbon fiber 4,500psi tank with you in a back or hip pack while hunting?

Wow, now we will be able to go on a mouse safari and safely take on those charging critters.

I have been fortunate to visit that famous Austrian town of Ferlach and saw some amazing gunmaking work there but I just can't believe what I'm seeing here. What a superb example of old style gunmaking. Your attention to detail is extraordinary. Can't wait to see the finished product and here all about your regulation trials etc. Well done.

Re: Double air rifle

I've a feeling, the regulation might be s simple as aligning the bores with lasers, soldering them and that's it. With only compressed air and 620fps to 670fps with 15gr. to 17gr. pellets, I don't think PCP will have regulation problems, but - you never know until you do it.

Judging by what we've see so far, I don't think regulation will be any problem anyway.

Re: Double air rifle

Thank you very much for your kind words,i really appreciate it.
Rifle will be filled to 200 bar and I think it should give around 30 consistent shots at this power level. It will have three leaf sights, one fixed and two folding, zeroed maybe at 15,30 and 50 meters, I haven't decided yet.
I never did regulation before, so will see how it goes, but I think it would be easier than with cartridge firing rifles, a lot less forces at work here.

Re: Double air rifle

Ingenuous exploitation of both air rifle and DR design features.

The rebounding lock will avoid the old valve bouncing problem and prove to some that the rebounding lock can prevent valve bounce.

The firing pins presumably act as individual valve actuators, which is a brilliant adaptation of DR design to the air rifle.

My only misgiving is the need for the oversized mid rib. But then, I am judging from photos, from close up it might be just the ticket.

Now, if you can find the time to write about the design and machining stages you will make a lot of us very happy.

Above all else though, it is also a very pretty double rifle. One of the most elegant I have seen.

Congratulations!

Re: Double air rifle

With low sights, those zeros might work just fine, or perhaps 20, 35 and 45? Something to think about along with everything else. The drop can get excessive in .22 compared to the same fpe level in .177.

I think you are doing an amazing job. 30 shots per fill would be wonderful. Will it have a regulator?

PCP, stunning and possible unique, canīt wait to hear more !! Great craftmansship shame you have that limit. Where are you in Europe ? I run a 23 grain .22 Bisley Magnum (the most accurate and consistent heavyish pellet I have found, at least in my rifle) at about 875 fps,
best

Re: Double air rifle

Daryl, no regulator, I want to keep it simple. It is possible to get quite good consistency with a little tinkering with hammer and valve springs, transfer port size..
On my previous air rife I got 60 shots out of 210 bar fill with a maximum spread 27fps, but it has about 50% larger reservoir.
Mike, Iīm from Slovenia.
For all of you interested, here you can see the build from the beginning.

Re: Double air rifle

Thank you, PCP - I also found your thread on the air rifle forum - I had forgotten about that.
At the lower allowable power, you should do very well with your DR.
27fps is very good for a PCP considering you started full.
Well done.

This is a very precise & meticulous game, working with minute detail changes in shape and diameter of orifices, making huge differences when dealing with pressures such as 3,000psi.

What he said, having access to a 4 axis machine center and a CNC lathe.. Would be fun
Though actually, i wouldnt mind trying to do a springer design, but the cocking force required to get decent power would probably be too much for I.

Damn, I can definitely appreciate that level of build quality, that's a great project and should be a very interesting collection piece.
I love the use of the hammers, I initially thought looking at them that you might have powered it by shotgun primers, but it appears to be a very fast fast opening valve done in a traditional way.
I like it a lot.

Re: Double air rifle

Very nicely done!
If I may ask some questions, you mentioned the bores are 22 cal, are they rifled and if so what is the twist? And what does the rifle weigh?

DarylS

Re: Double air rifle

LRF- it you look at the barrel breachs, you can see they are rifled.
Holding the Ctrl button down on the keyboard and pressing the + key will enlarge the page to make "things" easier to see. Pressing the Ctrl button and pressing the 0 (zero) key will return the page to normal size.
This works on a PC. I don't know if it works on a MAC - likely not.
