Is this the same as 6x70R brass but in 6.5? Just interested. I don't want to disrupt the thread. |

Looks like a pencil! Write a good story if a deer wandered past its sights! |

Quote: The old „Bleistiftpatrone = pencil cartridge“ 6.5x70R was designed in Suhl about 1911 to allow for light, slim drillings and combinations. It was a pure roebuck number with ballistics comparable to the .25-35 Win. It used 6.64 mm = .261” bullets like several other German “6.5” cartridges. A handloader may use Hornady .258” 117 gr bullets and 28 gr 4064 for about 2200 fps. Apparently it was more popular in Austria than in Germany. The German ammo companies declared it obsolete in 1934, “axailable only as stocks last”. About 25 years ago Krieghoff, Ulm and Norma resurrected the old case, but necked it down to use .243” bullets. Intended as a special varmint - roedeer cartridge for Krieghoff's insert barrels in their full power drillings, it was not a real success. So the 6x70R is obsolescent now too, ammo and empty cases hard to find. |

That's interesting, kuduae. I have a box of (marked) 6.5 160-gr. that measure .262" in diameter. They have a very large "blue nose" of lead. I've oft times wondered what rifle they were actually intended for. |

I have a Joh Springer Sidelock combination in 16 Gauge over 6.5x70r from 1910. It is splendid with the Vienna mounted scope. I plan to use it for Sitka Blacktail Deer and fox. |

I was talking to Bailey Bradshaw about making me a .22 Hornet double rifle. And a second set of barrels in 6x70R. I decided to wait for him to get more than the first DR under his belt. Perfect some techniques. Opportunity lost for me. Introductory price was very good. Now he has been making them even falling block DRs for some time, it might be out of my price range. A 6x70R would do fine on hog deer, roos, goats, normal sized feral pigs, fallow etc. |

That would be great! |

Is the parent case the 9.3x72r, similar to the 9x70r and the 8x72R? If so, can you not just run 9.3 brass through a 6.5x70 reloading die? If you get Bertrm brass, I suggest you anneal the brass before reloading. My experience is that their brass tends to be very hard and cracks when fired. |

Quote: No. The two cartridges, the old 6.5x70R and the “new” 6x70R have quite unique dimensions. While the 9.3x72R and many other cases based on the old British .360 have a base of 10.91 mm = .430” and a rim of 12.35 mm = .486”, the two “pencil cartridges” 6 and 6.5x70R are both base 9.0 mm = .354” and rim 10.7 mm = .421”. That’s about the base dimensions of a .32-20 case, while the 9.3x72R has base dimensions similar to the .30-30. |

I have a set of RCBS dies for 6.5x70R (2-die set), and a shell holder, which I would like to sell. If there is any interest here, please let me know, and I'll post a "for sale" thread. (Don't mean to hijack this one.) I also have 4 empty brass cases, unfortunately all w/ cracks, but possibly usable for dummy cartridges or display. No ammo or bullets, though. (And no rifle.) |

<< [6.5x70R] used 6.64 mm = .261” bullets like several other German “6.5” cartridges. A handloader may use Hornady .258” 117 gr bullets and 28 gr 4064 for about 2200 fps. >> For reloading -- presumably the next step, after ammo & brass -- I'd suggest paper patching a .257 cast bullet (2 wraps of .002"-.004" paper), sizing down the patched bullet as necessary to seat and chamber, and working up a load from there. I've been doing something like that in 6.5x55, with good results. At the moment I'm happy with 1500 fps in my 6.5x55, but paper patch will work fine at 2200 fps and beyond, if that's what you prefer. FWIW, I would not use an undersized jacketed bullet. I tried that with .30 cal. bullets in .303 British, some time ago, and after about 2 years everything would keyhole, which I think means I gas cut the throat & rifling leade until it would no longer spin .30 cal. bullets. Fortunately, that rifle still works with larger diameters (and paper patch). |

Dear Mr. Moosemind, dear John, I have access to cartridge cases (new/not fired) in private stock: caliber 6 x 70 R from the manufacturer Hülsen Horneber (stamped HH). Some measurements (caliper) length: 69,8 mm outer dia (case mouth): 6,85 mm inner dia (case mouth): 6,1 mm rim dia.: 10,5 mm rim height: 1,45 mm I shoot the 6x70R in an new barrel in a Rigby single shot break top hammer rifle. The rifle was made by master gunsmith Mr. Karl-Heinz Hirschle in Blaubeuren/Ulm Bavaria. The rifle shoots very good (less than 30mm / 5 shots at 100 meters, with a 5 power scope) using the 90grs Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet. If interested (please for private use only, not for selling) please send me a PM. best regards Rolf PS: I sent last year to a colleague of the NE-forum cases in 5,6x61 vom Hofe, the parcel from Germany did not arrive in USA at the intended recipient. If you have any ideas how to avoid vanishing parcels without an expensive fee, please let me know! |

I received the reloading dies and a handful of brass for dummy rounds from gunwonk. Now I have two sets. I sent Rolf a PM about his brass. This is getting to be a fun little project. |
