Trade options?

Ladies and gentlemen I am wanting a nice rifle of some sort, and offering a Marlin 1895 guide gun in 45-70. It has a hammer extension to clear the scope which is a bushnell. Please contact me for offers

Re: Trade options?

Joshua - what year is the rifle, as in perhaps, when did you buy it?

That detail might reflect in it's perceived value.

Re: Trade options?

I have had the rifle for roughly 2-3 years. I bought the gun used for 500.00 and have shot a total of 20 rounds through it. I have no clue as to the year the rifle was made. The best I can do is have someone post some pictures for me. I would like to get into a nice .303, 6.5x53, anything that is old and nice

Re: Trade options?

Check the side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. If the letters are jm its a good gun rm = questionable. Al

Re: Trade options?

I bought one a couple months ago and it seems OK, better than the first couple runs from Remington.

Re: Trade options?

It is a JM stamped rifle. Needing something older and classier if anyone is up to an even trade

Re: Trade options?

I would like to find something in a 6.5 of some sort, or a nice .303 british. Can be single shot, or bolt action. Prefer something along the lines of a military sporter turned into a nice rifle. Hoping someone may have something they would like to trade

Re: Trade options?

Perhaps someone has a Mauser 88, 71, 91 model? Or a project that they are willing to part with. Would like something to build a mannlicher style rifle on, so please message me if you are interested or have something else you may want to trade

Re: Trade options?

Don't think you want an 1871 Mauser unless you have a hankering for black-powder or equivalent loads. A model 1871/86 model will have a .446" groove diameter barrel. The model 1871's and 1871/76's have .457 groove diameter, but will accept only a .446" bullet, .011" undersize. That means paper patched undersized bullets and black powder only, to expand the bullet to fit the grooves.
The standard chamber will only accept a .446" bullet.

Re: Trade options?

Thank you for the advice there Daryl, I did not realize that. As good as I think the gun looks, I do not want to go thru the trouble of paper patching and looking for the bullets required

Re: Trade options?

Note - on the left side of the receiver, it says Mod 71
On the right side of the receiver, it is stamped 1876 twice, the second time, larger than the first.

When I received the rifle, the front sight was missing, so I soldered on a ramp with dovetailed blade.

The factory rear sight is REALLY nice, having a flip-up leaf, as well as a ladder giving 800yards, supposedly, in elevation.

This particular rifle was the carbine, with 20" bl. 20" rate of twist.

It has a bore of .437" and a groove diameter of .458", for rifling depth of .0105" per side.

Then, it was thought the deep grooves would give a 'place' for the fouling to go.

Indeed, with a clean barrel, they shot fairly well for a gun to replace single shot muzzleloading rifles, as the soft pure lead 370gr. smooth sided paper patched bullet would slug up to fill or almost fill the rifling.

In another 10 years, Peter Mauser saw the error of his ways & reduced the groove diameter to .446", which shot much better.

Due to the deep grooves, I re-chambered my rifle above, to take the .450 Alaskan case which would hold and now chamber a .4559/60" bullet inside the case, better fitting the .458" groove diameter.

It actually shot fairly well with BP loads, however, I preferred to shoot H4895 and 500gr. Lee bullets in it, with low pressure .45/70 loads generating some 22,000psi - for approximately 1,350fps, the same speed a full case (75gr.) of GOEX 2f gave me.

I sold the rifle to a friend who wanted to use it for bear hunting in the Hope area, as he was moving to Chilliwak, B.C.

The small town of Hope, B.C., is where the Sylvester Stalone movie First Blood was filmed. Good bear country.

Re: Trade options?

That is definitely a very interesting rifle you have there Daryl and thank you for the information on it. I do like some of the alaskan rounds, and have a siamese mauser action sitting here waiting here for something like that.
I would really like to trade for something that can be turned into a nice mannlicher style full length wood stocked rifle. I do not need anything big, and prefer a heavy for caliber bullet at a modest velocity anyway. Hoping someone here has something they would be willing to trade
