Thanks for posting. Looks good to me. And seeing most semi-autos now go for several thousand dollars in Australia now 99% of legal firearms owners can't own one, bloody cheap.

That is an interesting piece. It appears that the gas operating system may be off a M14; it is very different from a M1. Where was this made - Italy, Germany?

Re: Garand Sporter

Hard to believe that someone would replace the sturdy foolproof Garand receiver sight with an open rear sight. It there is a better sight arrangement for a military weapon, I have yet to see it, and its usefulness as a hunting sight should be obvious.

Are you saying you believe this Garand is not a sporterised mil rifle, but a sporter built rifle?

The stock design does nothing for me. I would like to see the forend taken further forward and not have as much slope on it forward of the magazine.

Yes and leave the Garand rear sight on it.

The rifle as a sporter has merit.

Yes I think it would be cool to have one in 338/06, 35 Whelan or 375/06. Would be quite the thumper with the quick follow up shots! Shame about our lame governments and there idiotic phobia's about semi - auto's

Re: Garand Sporter

Unfortunately, the photos do not do the rifle justice. There are many features I would like to see in more detail.
1. The gas system has been radically altered, and now resembles that of a M14. That is not a trivial exercise and speaks volumes regarding the skill of the gunmaker.
2. The receiver has been reshaped and the Garand sight removed. One wonders why?
3. There appears to be a sheet metal cover or awning over the operating rod. There appears to be a matching sheet metal feature on the left side, opposite the operating rod. It appears that this is a single piece of steel wrapping under the barrel, captivated between the stock and metal. Apparently the use of a barrel mounted sight precludes the use of a normal hand guard.
4. Magazine altered to 5 round "clip". Skill of a high order required!

Re: Garand Sporter

There are people who prefer an open rear sight and a bead, to an aperture sight. It is not obviously always best.
I am one of them, after using apertures for quite a while, I have reconsidered and I have gone back to open sights for hunting.

Viking338, years ago i was thinking of converting a Garand to 9.3x62mmm, no major changes just a rebarrel - just before everything went sour here!
Would have been a 8 shot heavy hitter for getting amongst a good mob of pigs!
Sadly no can do here in Oz, maybe one of our American cousins could try this for a project?
I have to agree with Carpetsahib & DoubleD - good workmanship to get it to function, Mr Grarand took years to perfect his creation & yes I hate to say it...its something only a mother would love! Much preferred the real McCoys....sadly I have & now never get to fire one!

Unlike most it seems, I like the look of this sporting creation. Whereas I also really dislike the Garand's looks in its military form, so was pleasantly surprised by the facelift.

The military M1 Garand to me is butt ugly, obviously not an important consideration for a mil rifle, but I find the M14 far better looking than the ungainly chubby looking M1.

Obviously everyone has their own opinions.

Re: Garand Sporter

Yeah - I-too really liked the M14. They just look more user friendly, to me. A guy I worked with in the Correction branch used a non-select fire M14(altered) as his moose rifle for many years, until the government confiscated it for descruction - back in around 1991 or so. That's when we had a Conservative Government infiltrated with left wing idiots.

Re: Garand Sporter

The M1 was what I was issued when I joined the Marine Corps in 1959, and a Nationsl Match M1 was what I was shooting when I earned my first "leg" on my Distinguished Rifleman badge in 1965. It has a beautifully designed buttstock, which makes it ideal for snap shooting and a reliably adjustable, repeatable rear sight which has stood the test of time on both it and the M14.

As a military weapon, it has its shortcomings: the 8 round (originally 10 round)en bloc clip, the unnecessarily powerful .30-'06 cartridge, rather than the .276 Pedersen cartridge it was designed around, the long operating rod, the gas system, which bled gas off close to the muzzle, and the use of wood in the upper handguard and the length of the barrel are all negatives which, with the exception of the cartridge, its succesor the M14 corrected. Despite its caliber, the M14 remains the premier battle rifle of all time, in my opinion. The only improvement required would be to chamber it for the British .280/.30 cartridge, which the US Army Ordnance foolishly rejected.

Out of curiosity, I once had an M1A built in caliber .280/.30, and it was one honey of a rifle. The cartridge duplicates the .30-'06 ballistics out to 1000 yards (as did the .276 Pedersen) and proved superbly accurate. A sensible military would revive it.

Re: Garand Sporter

There was a local outfit that used to build Garand's in bigger bore calibers like .338 and .458 Win. I don't think they are doing them anymore but you can still find some info floating around out there about them, the company website is here (they have some info under the history page):

http://mccannindustries.com/

The Mini-G is another interesting one that is currently being built. It's a Garand's cut down to a 16" barrel, you can get them in 30-06, 308 and 35 Whelen:

Re: Garand Sporter

This is a very interesting post. I have never seen a sporterized Garand before this and didn't know it had ever been done.

I also am interested in the re-work of the front end. The shorter gas system would have taken a lot of work for sure.

Lancaster, thanks for posting.

I miss my little M1 carbine - it was a Winchester too!
When Howard outlawed them I donated mine to the Townsville military museum rather than see it needlessly destroyed - you can't put a price on history!
Was a fun gun to use on all sorts of fast moving targets in thick scrub, as long as they weren't too large!

Re: Garand Sporter

We had M1 Carbines as our jail-house guard rifles for many years. They were all stamped, "Bulgarian Police" - go figure - HA! We had fun with them up on the jail's range, when I was the firearms Inst. and due to that, I have thousands of empties, once fired, of course.

Always threatened to make up a .17PeeWee on an M1Carb. - never got round to it. Without the gas tube, it would be a straight pull, bolt action, auto return. Pull the bolt back, let it go & it ejects the spent round then chambers the next round. (you'd want to keep the return spring, just because)

There was an article specifically about sporterizing the Garand in one of the 1968 American Rifleman magazines; I'll have to check to see which one.

I like it. I wanted a M1 Carbine back in the early 1980's when we still had freedoms. I think maybe a $100 for one then??? Maybe more. Why did I not buy one!!1 Probably had a family farm workers/teenagers income as well, ie no holiday pay, no overtime, paid by the hour.

I like this Germanic stutzen M1 Carbine. Worth it at the price if the barrel is not shot out.

Here it owuld make a nice close range feral pig rifle in the lignum or swamps.

Evil death dealing mass murderers gun here now and verbotten.

Re: Garand Sporter

It might not be a Garand. It might be a BM59. The Italians modified the Garand in the late 1950s, rechambered to 7.62x51, redesigned the gas system and made other changes. I think they were selective fire. They were halfway between an M1 and an M14.

My Garand sporter is 100% as-issued. (other then my glass-bedding the stock) I use it for my sport of hunting, so that makes it a sporter.
Last year. 1 shot. 224 yards, facing me. Shot from a sitting position and the bullet hit the top of the buck's heart.

As to your Garand, she looks in superb nick to say the least!
Certainly will be a family heirloom to pass down.
