Sry, no. Do you make your cases from .303 or .30/40 Krag brass? Seems to me, they were a little short. I made up a case a while back, just for fun.

What is the proper diameter for the 40-60?
I ended up with a swaging die for a paper patched bullet which patches up to .403” with my paper.
Figured it may work for my .400 black powder rifles but I suspect it is really for an American chambering.

Darl S I am using Krag brass. Some use 303 but it is a bit short. The 30-40 krag after being blown out just needs a short trim back to 2.2" and your ready to load and shoot. I've annealed about thirty or so in preparation for loading and fire forming. I'm going to try opening up the case by firing them in a 410. I just ordered some expanding buttons from NOE in 32, 35, 38, 41 just in case the 410 doesn't work out.
Huvius, The usual diameter for the Maynard 40-60 is .417. What most are shooting today is not really the Maynard cartridge since most all except those who are shooting original rifles are shooting .408 bullets, so what they are really shooting today with the chambers and bores is a lengthen 40 Krag. I'm waiting to hear from JES Boring, I've written to see if they offer this chambering and if so what dimensions they are using. I'm looking for a cast pointed bullet of around 300 grains that is similar to PJ's "money" design, but without having to go to a custom mold. I'm not planning to shoot paper with this round. My plan is to run an alloy of 25-1 up to 30-1 over black. Short range 150 yrd average shots of Arizona Elk, deer and pig. The rebore donor rifle is a Handy rifle currently chambered in 30-30. Hopefully this will be a simple rebore and then load development.

This one is a little heavier than you indicated, but would work, I think - 356 gr. FN or hollow point. It would make a better game bullet than the money-styled bullet.

Thank you Daryl S, I'll look into that one. I just spoke to Al yesterday about this project and ordered some expanding plugs, so I may down the road hook him up for a mold too. Thx again.

I have 2 of his moulds (.25cal. bullets for air rifle) and both have been excellent. His machining is super (CNC I expect).

I have a Ballard built by Barry Darr in 40/60, his bbl and mold .403 diam tapered grease groove. Krag brass works best as I get occasional case separation when using Winchester 303 brass. Haven't measured but I am confident that it is down to rim thickness variation in the brass that I have. Simply fill the case with black powder with card wad over the top, breach seat a projectile and shoot. Cases form correctly, don't have a sizer, don't crimp only as I only breach seat. Anneal the necks after cleaning the first time they are shot. Currently on my 5 reload with the 15 cases I have made ups from the Win 30/40 brass. Why 15 cases? the competition that I shoot this rifle in is 12 rounds and I have 3 extras in case of a shoot off. Have never shot smokeless powder in this Ballard and probably never will.
