Re: "Cast Bullets for the .500 Jeffery" by David Commens

I have done a similar experiment with my Model 71/1876 Mauser, with a badly pitted bore- mostly in the grooves. As this series had a .457" groove diameter (& .437" bore), not .446" and .437" like the 1884 models of the 1871's, I re-chambered mine to take the .450 Alaskan ctg., loaded down, of course.

I loaded up 50 rounds with a light load of H4895 for 1,200fps and a 420gr. RCBS .458" bullet with 320grit compound mixed with bullet lube, in the grease grooves.

50 rounds later, the bore shone very nicely. After that, it shot well and did not lead the bore.

Good way to get some practice and easy on your shoulder. I run 400gr cast bullets with a gas check through my 416 Rigby.

This past September I used cast bullets in my Sauer 11mm Mauser double rifle for a bear hunt in northern Ontario. It was the first time I have ever used cast for big game.
The bear didn't drop in his tracks...he ran about 35 yards! Both lungs and the top of his heart were hit. I'll use cast again next year.

My wife is a talented crafter. Sewing, quilting, knitting, you name it. I have no skills or interest in those things and, unfortunately, no particular talent at woodworking or mechanics. But I can make a bucket full of beautiful cast bullets, sized to within 1/1000 of an inch, of the appropriate alloy for my purpose. That is very satisfying.
