Hello from a new guy. Ed Hubel is building a 24 ga, FH for me. ( Similar to 577 NE ) I will cast bullets for it using an Accurate Mould 650 gr. I know Ed will have a load for me but I am hoping that you folks may have a suggestion for a good powder as well. i.e.. What are you using in 577 NE. This single shot rifle is for my third Cape Buffalo hunt. I have looked throught this forum but have not found much on powders for 577NE or similar. Any suggestions are sure appreciated. Thanks in advance, Brian |

Brian, 650gr. is perfect along with 160gr. of 1 1/2F Swiss. If you haven't read the letters to Greener and to "The Field" magazine back in the 1800's, you really should. "The Gun and it's Development 9th edition. |

Thanks Daryl for your reply. Sorry, I don't know what 1 1/2F Swiss is. Black powder? Also, Thanks for the reading suggestion. I think that I will like that. |

I found out what 1 1/2F Swiss is. I thought it was something to eat. It's Black powder! (Yikes) I'll pass on that. Brian |

Brian, there is probably a load using Accurate Arms 5744. Might e-mail them (Westernpowders.com). I had a recipe from them some years back for .577 Snider that shot very nicely, and I used 5744 for cast loads in .416 Rigby with great satisfaction. |

Thanks Bill, I will check it out. Meanwhile I will be trying loads with the following powders which I have on hand. Rel 22, Viht 550, 4350 May use 24 ga. card and wad as required. Thanks again for your response Bill. I will email Western Powders. Brian |

In my .577 rifle I tried 4350 and it was a miserable failure, with misfires, bloopers, and lots of unburned powder left behind on the loads that did go off. In all fairness I may not have reached a good enough load density with it, but it was causing so much trouble that I gave up on it. If you want to try a Reloader powder, I would suggest Reloader 17, I think the 22 is too slow for good clean burns. I wound up using H4198 but I'm not going to tell you how much, you need to start low at around 60 to 65 grains and work slowly upwards from there. I know 5744 will work but I have no experience with it in the .577's. Benchmark was also a recommended powder but I never got around to trying it yet either. 4895 or 4831 would be my next choice of powders to try, if I were still not satisfied. Good luck with finding that special load that your gun likes. Bob |

The big cases, normally, do not like the really slow powders. I would ask about H4895 and perhaps Western Powder's 5744. Black powder is the easiest, but then both cases and the rifle need water cleanup. |

Don't put the cart before the horse. Just ask Ed what loads he recommends for this set up, then plan accordingly. |

What length is your case? I would think 4198 would be the powder of choice with a lead bullet. With a jacketed bullet you might go a little slower, with Varget being the logical choice. Why would you have this wildcat made instead of a .577 3" NE? Curl |

"Cart before the horse..." . Yes, I have some nice loads from Ed. I got on this website for research and to connect with intelligent shooters. "Why this wild cat" . 24 ga FH is legal in Shotgun Only areas. Brian |
