.357-.310 Nickal

A mate of mine wanted a cartridge to go in his Martini Cadet, but he wanted to keep the barrel 'cause it has a really good bore and he wanted something with a little more punch than the .310 Cadet/Greener round had.
We discussed it for a while and he left me to it, so I necked down a .357 Magnum case, using a .303 Brit necking die, flared the mouth and seated a Hawksbury River 120g bullet.
When Dave dropped in the next day he took one look at it and was hooked.:)
No doubt it's been done before, but I can't find anything on it.
What do you fellas reckon? Look the goods?
From the left.
.357 Mag with Hawksbury River hard cast bullet.
.357-.310 Nickal
.310 original, heeled, exterior lubed 120g soft lead bullet
.310 with Hawksbury River bullet
.310 with cast .115g bullet from original .32-20 Winchester mould. ( I've yet to try this one on the target)

Re: .357-.310 Nickal

Very nice AFRO, looks to be a nice looking little cast bullet cartridge, can you please post some more details about the rifle and your loads?

Regards,
David

Re: .357-.310 Nickal

What is the diameter of the Hawksbury bullet?
I know many 310 Cadet barrels will not shoot a 32-20 bullet well at all.

Thanks David,
We'll have to wait for details on the rifle and loads, as I haven't built it yet.
Dave is talking about kicking it off later in the year, as he has other commitments as well.
As soon as we are up and running, I'll be posting details.
We know it will be going into a Martini Cadet Carbine that he owns.

Cheers,
Tony

Re: .357-.310 Nickal

Huvius, they measure .318" over the hard blue lube, so the real diameter is probably .316". They are also very hard and shatter on steel plates.
They have no heel, so to get them into my tight chamber, I'm having to FLS the loaded round, with the brass I'm using.
Dave is using Bertram brass and his hand loads fit my chamber with the Hawksbury projectile.
My brass has no head stamp at all, so I don't know who made it, but it must be thicker than Bertram's brass.

I'm hoping that the 32-20 bullet (.314") will obturate enough to seal the bore and work, if not, I'll have to get one of CBE's moulds. I'll find out this afternoon if they will shoot.

Any further developement on this cartridge? I'm thinking of necking 357 mag to take a .300" projectile to use up a new .300 unchambered barrel intended for a 300 Sherwood project and a Martini Cadet action that is not going ahead as a 300 Sherwood.

Re: .357-.310 Nickal

Many of the .310 Cadet rifles have now ended up back here in Britain, as a (poor) substitute for the pistols 'bought' from us 20 years ago. Almost all reloaders have found that the use of a softish lead heel base bullet is essential for any accuracy.

I expect a .357 Magnum case could well work, and would hold more powder, but the higher velocity might cause the bullet to strip its rifling. Let us know how it works!

Re: .357-.310 Nickal

I already have two martinis in 300 Sherwood ,one is an early Francotte action( pre Francotte patent) the other is built on a Greener Martini Cadet action .The barrel I have is brand new ,its profiled to BSA Cadet profile .Its also unchambered ,I was intending to build a 300 Sherwood with it and the Cadet action and parts I have, but a good friend passed away before Christmas and left me a number of his rifles , one being a custom built 300 Sherwood ,unfired. So I dont really need three 300 Sherwoods ,so I was looking for a case /.300 bullet combination to use the barrel .
One I have been considering is the 30/30 case necked to .300,
others are 357 necked to .300 , 357Maximum necked to .300.Another option is 300 Rook which is a shorter version of the 300 Sherwood, same case only shorter.
Yes the 300 Sherwood is a cool cartridge ,I like

Re: .357-.310 Nickal

I dont have a host site to post and link to.
A few years ago I had images on Photobucket ,that were stolen ,then I recieved an e-mail from the host site telling me that someone was complaining that the images belonged to them ,and wanted me to remove them from my account .
I adamantly refused to remove my own images ,so photobucket closed my account .I've never used an image storage site since .I am a member on Cast Boolits and have images posted there .Same user name .

From the estate of my friend ,I was bequeathed a Greener 300 Sherwood martini custon built by Bob DeVris of Kudu services ,and a N04 pattern BSA sporter in 303.

I purchased 5 other firearms from his estate .
T Andrews 380Rook martini , BSA Martini sporter in 32/20 ,Francotte 297/230Long in tip top condition ,a lovely Aya sxs 410 shotgun in pristine condition .Last but not least a BSA International Martini Target rifle also in extremely good condition .Can you tell I like Martinis?

Unfortunately I run out of funds and was unable to purchase his custom
built 22lr/32-40/410 double rifle/shotgun with three barrel set .
And his Blisset 500x3"Exp double which is on a gun sales related website for sale ATM.

A .410 double shotgun with spare barrels in .32-40 sounds like real fun, along with the .22LR barrels for winter practice. I have what was a Midland .410 hammer shotgun, but now linered for .32-20. A great recreational target rifle - other shooters can't keep their hands off it!

No mate, it appears that you don't like Martinis what-so-ever!!!
If for whatever reason that you get sick of them - please donate them to me!
Seriously it is great to see that you saved some really unique pieces mate, if handed in to the police they'd be rusted up in no time, shame about not picking up the others though!
Your friend certainly had a wonderful collection.

The 22 barrels and the 32/40 barrels were custom made and not relined 410 barrels ,the original 410 barrels were refurbished and are included in the set .both sets of rifle barrels have thier own unique forend and scopes .
Im rather dissaponited that I cannot afford to buy it ,but then you cant have every thing .

Re: .357-.310 Nickal

Hello Kev I have one of the 303/310 cases I told you about, not 303/300 as I thought I will post it to you next week when I get to the post office, when you get it I can put you in touch with the maker if you like I don't think it is much of a jump down from 303/310 to 303/300.
