Wildcat Cartridge Collecting

I received a note from a Spanish man, Jose, who collects wildcat ctg. cases- empty.
The ctg. he most wants, is the ,405 Grenadier, impossible to find in Europe.
Turns out this round is simply the 7.62X54R necked to take a .411" bullet
.

Here is Jose's collection, or part of it, so far.

This is some of our correspondence so far.
Hi Daryl,

Thanks! for you kindness.
Yes! I Know that is impossible to get the fireformed case but is Ok. for me the rounded shoulder,
because I think there is only one rifle in the world chambered for this caliber.
You know a wildcatter that can make one for me?
He could also make these, they are my nightmare...

.585 Wells .458-577 Wells
.550 Wells .450 KNR
.550 Flanged .416 BGA
.600/538 Mega Mag. .470 Rhino
.510-577 Wells .416 Aagard
.500 Bushmiller .416 TYR
.577/500 Super Exp. .375-50 BMG

Regards,
Jose

Thanks for the pictures – they explain a lot. Simply necking up a 7.62X54R is a simple operation for anyone with a case, shell holder for the 7.62X54R and a .411 expander button. The only problem is for the case to look ‘right’ it needs to be fireformed in a rifle chambered for that round. If not fireformed, the shoulder will be much more rounded, not sharply angled at the juncture of the neck and shoulder.

Tomorrow, I’ll upload the picture to my photobucket account and post it along with your letter.
Best wishes Jose

Daryl

Subject: RE: .405 Grenadier Wildcat

Hi Daryl,

Thanks a million! for help me.
I have now about 600 different big bore from .375 to .750
I just know that the parent case is 7.62 x 54R and Mr. Grenadier make the wildcat by fire forming,
necked up the case to .411 Cal.

Regards,
Jose

What I am asking is, is there anyone in Europe who could assist Jose?

Re: Cartridge Collecting

Currently, we are waiting for the last batch of cases to arrive to Jose.

I necked .243WSSM cases to .375, .411", .429, .458 and .465 for him on his request. the last batch were on the WSM case.

Rather concerned as cases have never taken this long to get to him before.

Re: Wildcat Cartridge Collecting

I am glad they finally arrived. I was questioned quite closely regards the last batch of cases by the "Head" Post Office employee - who insisted the Spanish Postal Service would not allow cartridges in the mail. Odd thing this time, I actually packaged them in front of them showing they were inert - see-through, one end to the other - no primers, etc. I can only conclude that they did not understand the word inert as pertaining to the brass. I actually thought they might discard them, themselves once I left the post office - glad it didn't happen.

You are most welcome, Jose.

Re: Wildcat Cartridge Collecting

There is a guy over on shootersforum who owns a rifle chambered in the .470 Rhino. According to him, it is way to expensive and to much hassle to work with one, but he also wont get rid of it. I have some data he sent me on it if anyone is interested
