i keep picking them up and looking at them. neat gun remington makes one also out of an 870 but side by side the mossberg i think is the better choice. has the top mounted safty and a strap on the forend plus its 20 bucks cheaper at 359$ might be the ultimate outdoor personal protection gun

I would prefer a handgun or normal short 12 bore.

I do like my 835 with 24" rifled tube. It spreads buck nicely

for indoors and is very good at range with standard slugs.

That gun, incidently would be legal for purchase by anyone in possession of a P.A.L., due to it being factory made and over 26" oal AND not being meant to be fired with one hand.

Must meet those three criteria. factory - 26" - 2-handed.

Good article.

If firearms were legal for defensive ownership, here, I would gof ro one.

I could choose my father's Mossberg pump action shotgun for that purpose. Once I cleaned all the rust off it, buffed it clean, painted it to make it look not too gross afterwards, cut off the aweful vari-choke on it, and installed a new choke system, new probably rifle sights.

I have a need for a farm class C pest destruction shotgun and that one should do it once the paperwork goes through.

Re: Mossberg Shockwave--new home defense weapon..

Mate mine definitely will be ONLY for rabbits and other evil fured and feathered critters. Even if I do develop buckshot and slugs for it. And when one day, God forbid, some evil person, not in uniform, visits, to use for sefl defence, one would have to unlock the safe, unlock the ammo box, load the shotgun, then challenge the varmint ... God forbid people in a allegedly free country infringing on the legal rights of criminals by shooting them in self defence!!!

But yes have to acquire that overly rusty Mossbery and see about cleaning it up. Was shocked by its condition when I last saw it. Even worse the Lithgow .22 single shot I had restored decades ago for Dad. Also very rusty ...

Mine wears the rifled tube as I quit shooting waterfowl many years ago. It is very accurate with fosters as well as the sabot pistol bullets. The groove diameter of the rifle tube is .724".

One of the most talked-about firearms to come out of the 2017 SHOT Show was the Mossberg 590 Shockwave—a 12-gauge 14" barrel pump-action gun that does not require NFA paperwork. We've covered it extensively, and you can learn more about it here. One of the main questions folks have been asking since its introduction is, "Will it be offered in a 20-gauge model?" We now the answer: Yes, and they are already in production and shipping to wholesalers.

The 20-gauge version of the Shockwave required an engineering redesign, as this is Mossberg's first offering of the 590 in a smaller gauge. In addition to a scaled-down receiver, the cob-styled, tactical fore-end was reduced in overall size. The gun weighs in at a mere 4.95 lbs., has a 6-round capacity, and has an overall length of 26.4".

At the core of the 590 Shockwave is Mossberg's non-binding twin action bars, positive steel-to-steel lock-up, an anti-jam elevator, dual extractors and Mossberg's universally recognized, ambidextrous top-mounted safety. The lightweight receiver is constructed of anodized aluminum and is drilled and tapped for an optic or accessories. The magazine tube features a convenient clean-out cap. The gun is 2¾" and 3" capable and features a heavy-walled barrel with bead sight and matte blue finish. Rear and magazine cap sling swivel studs complete this compact package.

The "bird's head"-shaped pistol grip from Shockwave Technologies provides this 590 with its distinctive name. The Shockwave Raptor grip features an enhanced textured finish, allowing for maximum control while minimizing felt recoil. The grip is constructed of durable, glass-filled polymer with non-reflective, black finish and overall length of 5.25".

Specifications:
Type: 590 Non-NFA Pump-Action
Gauge/Chamber: 20-ga. 3"
Capacity: 6 shells
Barrel/Finish: 14.37" in Heavy-Walled Matte Blue
Sights: Bead
Chokes: Cylinder Bore
Overall Length: 26.37"
Fore-end/Stock/Finish: Shockwave Raptor Grip/Cob Fore-end with Strap/Black Synthetic
Approx. Weight: 4.95 lbs.
MSRP: $455
