Re: boxlock - sidelock crossbreed?

A sideplated boxlock (Kastenschloss mit blinden Seitenplatten). Boothroyd, "Sidelocks and Boxlocks", shows such a gun by Charles Hellis & Sons, Birmingham. Quote: "Such plates are sometimes encountered. They do not have anything to do with the mechanism but are there as decoration."
On this A&D by Westley-Richards they may have been added later to reinforce a split stock repair.

Strange set-up. Usually side plates are added to box locks for the reason of embellishment. I would have to agree that in this case, if that was their intention, they failed. Norman4

A Westley Richard's action. I think the sideplates are to stop the stock from spreading apart. That stock has been severely oversanded.
