Gunsmith for CZ 550 Safari Magnum 470 Capstick Conversion

Hi can anyone recommend a gunsmith for a 375 H&H to 475 Capstick conversion for a CZ 550 Safari Magnum? Also any opinions on Krieger barrels? This would be a next winter project. I'm going to enjoy my 375 H&H elk and bear hunting this year. However, I do plan to go cape buffalo hunting in the next few years. I wouldn't mind a little more gun and the recoil of the 375 H&H was depressingly mild ...

Chuck, Consider sending your rifle to Jim Dubell at Clearwater reboring. He does wonderful rebores with reasonable wait times (3-4 weeks) and opening the 375 H&H chamber to 470 Capstick is way simple. This option would require no stock modifications, which could be non-trivial changing the recoil lug arrangement on the barrel. Also, with Jim, you could, within limits, specify not only twist, but also groove depth. Your rifle would get a bit lighter, which would provide more "satisfactory" recoil. Win, win

Thanks Otto, is a rebore as accurate as a new barrel?

Chuck, My experience with Jim's rebores spans about every action type, incl double rifles, and, without exception, all resulted in fine shooting rifles. Jim hand laps each job, and you'll be blown away by the smoothness of his rebores. He's a stickler for quality. He did a 9.3 on a Rem 760 barrel for me that had two tiny marks about 3 inches ahead of the chamber. He wanted to find another barrel and redo it. I ask him to ship what he had, and when received, I couldn't find the marks without a bright light. He returned it at no charge and it shoots great. I truly think you'll end up with a fine shooting 470 Capstick, or I wouldn't have suggested a rebore.

It is no mystery for any good gunsmith to convert a .375 Czech to .470 Capstick, very small work on the railings - thats all.......

Hi Otto, I got in touch with Jim at Clearwater Reboring. Do you know if I need another recoil lug if I go up to 470 Capstick? My rifle is glass bedded and has dual crossbolts?

Chuck,
If your rifle is bedded and has both front a rear crossbolts, it'll be fine. I'd have it bedded and double crossbolted if its not ... you'll notice a significant difference between 375H&H and 470Lott recoil wise. I had a CZ550 in 458WinMag that was a pussy cat until rechambered to 458Lott and it really came alive at velocities above 2200fps with 500gr.

My current 470Capstick is a sub-9lb Rem700 ... I'll be weighting it up to 10.5lb and adding a recoil reducer as its brutally fun to shoot! You're going to love the Capstick!!
Cheers...
Con

Hi Con, my rifle is bedded, has dual crossbolts, and already has one recoil reducer. So hopefully it's fine.

You will have to open up the rails of the action a bit to get the rifle too feed. Also a bit of grinding on the feed ramp will be needed. One of my customers had his .375 rebarreled to .470 Capstick by MRC and when he got it back it would not feed at all and that is what I had to do to get things right. I also glass bedded the rifle and it had no barrel lug but with the double cross bolts and bedding it has held up fine.
I have also heard very good things about the work done by Clearwater Reboring, I think that is who Doug Turnbell uses.

Thanks Judson, I sent my rifle to Ed Plummer for his CZ #1 upgrade (model 70 type 3 postion safety, straighten and fill bolt, and single stage match type trigger). He's re-glassbedding it and putting another recoil lug on it, so it should be ready for a 470 Capstick rebore next winter. First I'm going elk and deer hunting with it as a 375!

Chuck

Is that gunsmith any relation to the one who came up with the .224 Plummer? It is a varmint cartridge based on the 6mm improved necked down to .224. It is a real smoker with 55 grain bullets going 4489 and 50 grain bullets at around 4580 fps.

Not sure but here's a link to his web site. They specialize in making custom rifles out of CZ 500 actions. I've heard uniformly good things about him, both online and from some folks in Colorado Springs who've sent their rifles to him.
