.425 Westley Richards

Is the .425 Westley Richards a good calibre today?
I reload, and what a clasic calibre that fits into a standard lenght action.

I believe the 425 WR uses a rebated rim and that is one reason it was not very popular and has not been revived since.

.425 WR dos have a rebated rim - it also has a low shoulder and long neck, making it quite a bizarre looking cartridge. The ballistics, however, are pretty impressive: around 2400 fps velocity and over 5000 ft/lbs with a 410 grain bullet. It was a succesful calibre in its day (being introduced in 1909) and there were even a few doubles built to take it!
The short case length means that a standard Mauser action can accept it and the rebated rim will fit a bolt originally designed for something like .30-06. All this means that good dangerous game rifle can be built around a relatively inexpensive action. Kynoch are even making ammunition for it. The only reasons I can see for its lack of success are that the odd shaped cartridge puts people off and the proliferation of more modern cartridges like .458 Lott et al. Shame.

Is there anyone out there that knows who can and will make a barrell in .425 WR for a Blaser R93?

Maybe your local Blaser importer/distributor could provide some leads. They would probably be the only ones importing the blank barrels, if that is being done.
I have heard of one fellow having a 500 Jeffrey (I think ?) in a Blaser and another large bore custom barrel so it is obviously possible.

These guys are excellent and have barreled and chambered my Remington 30-S action for the 375 Dakota cartridge. This thing shoots like a benchrest rifle!

I have owned two 425 rifles built by Westley Richards before WW II and they were super guns. I wish I would have kept one of them but I didn't. The old rifles are available but as usual they can be on the expensive side. They can be had for 5500.00 and up depending on how bad the guy wants to sell it. They ( Westley Richards) built two different versions, the first was a deluxe that was built on a 98 Mauser and had slots machined with into the rear portion of the receiver to facilitate proper feeding and it worked very well. The second version was built on an FN action and did not have the slots which caused unreliable feeding. Avoid this one like the plague!
