.700 caliber on game?

G’day guys,

So thoughts on the .700 caliber at the .700 nitro ballistics of 1000gr @ 2000fps. If I recall they say it has less penetration than the other nitro calibers due to the speed combined with large frontal area. Would higher SD (say 1200gr?) fix this? Is the penetration still ample for any of the standard shots on an elephant (including frontal brain?). Does anyone have any articles they can scan or email to me about the .700 nitro express?
I’m thinking of something like Ed’s .700 Hubel Express, loaded to 2000fps with the 1000gr bullet. If I ever (it’s only a dream at the moment) get it built then I’ll probably at most only get to use it on a water buffalo in Aus and feral pigs around here.
Why .700? Well, it’s not a common bore size, I like the “1000 at 2000” ballistics. Weight on the other hand.. we’ll build it to 16-17lbs and not have any thread for a muzzle break. If it’s “too heavy” then I’ll just have to work out, right? As for recoil I can also use cast loads running in black powder velocity for practice and to tame it down on smaller game..

For sighting arrangement what do you think? 1 standing 3 folding for 50, 100, 150, 200 (on a quarter rib)? Not that I’d ever shoot game that far with it will be more just cosmetic (but I’d still like them sighted in properly). Sorta like Fatboy404’s .404 Jeffery rear sight appearance. Also - should the front sight be banded or just mounted on top? It’s going to be a big gun but I don’t want it to look chunky, aiming for a sorta big English not gun look.. pics of sighting suggestions?

Anyways,
Ramblings..
Cheers,
Troy.

Re: .700 caliber on game?

on anything than an elephant a 1000 grains bullet would be like dynamite

the british rear sight is a nice optical feature but thats all, imho. the only advantage I can see is to have different sights for different loads on your rifle so it will be easy to switch between maybe low power lead bullets and the full power load.
you have to sight your rifle for maybe 50 -80 meters anyway.

Re: .700 caliber on game?

A fair few features (like numerous leaves) would be predominantly for looks, and maybe chucking cast at metal like you said
Certainly not a long range rifle.

Thinking 28” barrel also with a goooood long taper towards the muzzle, again, to try and reduce the “chunky” look.

Re: .700 caliber on game?

there is a thin red line between the weight of the rifle you need to deal with the recoil and the weight you want to carry all the time.
btw, a muzzle breaks only reduce recoil by the speed of the gas. it can't reduce the part of the recoil that comes from the bullet weight.

what do you thinking about the action you want use for such a projekt?

Re: .700 caliber on game?

Heya Lancaster - it’ll be a Montana Rifle Company “Professional Hunter” model 1999.

I’m not a fan of breaks so it’s not even a fleeting idea to put one on. Will go the way of how they used to take recoil - weight. 4 and 8 bores are both still heavier than this will be. There’s no reason the rifle can’t be lighter, it’s just a personal desire to tame it the proper way.

This is all hypothetical. Currently working on the cartridge design and it all hinges on whether I succeed at what I’m trying to do in life with a career. If I get into the career then it’ll be built. If not, it remains a hypothetical..

Never let dreams go Ash!
Took me 40 years to finally get a proper old Martini Henry, not in bad nick considering that it's 131 years old - still got a roasting off the wife, but hey it's better to ask for forgiveness than ask permission!

Re: .700 caliber on game?

Congratulations!

I’ll try and keep it alive if things get held up or at least chisel at it over time..

I would go back a peg to 600.

Yep I wanted a .577 Revolver for 20-25yrs & just got 2 of them !

I to think .700 is a bit large but then I want 8 & 4 bore double so I can’t really talk !

Make that a second peg to 577. I fired four shots from a 600 NE, gave me a massive headache for the rest of that day.

One of the issues there is the only other bolt gun caliber is 600 has a dumb name - “600 overkill”.

I’ve wanted a 700 for years so am doing a 700 won’t be fired much no matter what caliber it is anyways. Well, hopefully it will but I don’t see many pigs.
