375 H&H from Joe Smithson
|
I just took delivery of a new GMA small ring 375H&H that Joe Smithson put together for me.
Weighs under 8lbs loaded and scoped.

I really like the barreled action. 8 lbs. would be OK without scope - for me. The plastic stock not so much, however my 9.3x62 has one.
I bought my gun screw driver set from Princess Auto some years ago - Wheeler but did not see the torque wrench.
I've never torqued action guard screws for over 40years of removing and replacing actions - I must go in to see if they have that wrench.

Perfect weight loaded and scoped. I have warmed to the non timber stocks over the years and think that whole rifle is a cracker. If I had to be a one gun hunter the rest of my life that would about be it. What type of stock is it if you don't mind me asking.

That is a nice bit of kit! I’m a lumber lover myself, but there’s nothing like a synthetic handle in the often nasty and wet conditions of the fall in northern Ontario!!
The weight is something I like as well...... I LOVE light weight rifles when I’m carrying them in the field, but the love doesn’t extend to the bench where recoil can get rather sporty...... In the huntig fields, a rifle is carried an awful lot more than it is shot.
Well done Rell.... That is a lovely rifle. The stock shape looks good as well and should assist in taming the recoil.

Torqueing a synthetic stock seems like a waste of time to me.
The whole point of torqueing is to eliminate the effects of stock instability, of which there is none with such a stock.

Agree--nice looking "working" rifle..for me personally, only use synthetic anymore unless headed to Africa and its more arid regions...
As to the torque, HS Precision suggests the torque to be 65 inch lbs ..which is what I have used on most of my rifles since 2001..based on HS's reputation, figure they have it figured out..
Good job...let us know how she shoots..

Nice rifle Rell. The weight I like. Some synthetic stocks soak up recoil more than others but all more than timber. However I still appreciate a good timber stock but prefer synthetic.
I torque my rifle screws now, saves me over tightening them.

I actually have that wrench from Wheeler already in a scope mounting kit.
The stock is hand laid carbon fiber, 15 LOP and made to my measurements. Fist synthetic that fits me. I have had a lot of problems with nice walnut and I lean more towards synthetics these days.
No bottom metal so the blind magazine cuts weight a bit. I really really like the rounded shape without bottom metal, you can load 4 rounds but the bolt will not close with 4 down. So three down and one in the chamber.
It shoots well under 1 inch with 300gr Barnes X and a healthy dose of RL 15.
I’ll try and take more photos shortly, the sights are great and it has some cool details worth looking at.
Now, do I get the sister rifle made up in 300 Win or .......

As to wrench..yes, I also have owned that same one for several years..actually bought it at a local gun shop.. works well..and use it on almost everything..tighten it back up to manufacturers specs...

Nice rifle! We (my sons and I) have a Rem XCR II in 375 Weatherby that weighs 7 1/4 lbs. The weight includes a Leupold 2-7x scope, sans sling and ammo. The stock really soaks up recoil and the rifle is very accurate. Nice to carry in the incessant rain of Alaska, elsewhere I prefer my walnut 11.25 lb CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery.

I wonder how many poeple have shot a .375 with a light weight in total?
I think the Blaser I shot however was 6 1/4 lbs including scope and rounds in the magazine. (or was it 7 1/4 lbs? Will have to a search on the forums, as I have forgotten which it is)
Edited to add: And I forgot to say, it was NOT pleasant.

No thanks. Friend of mine has a .300 Win Mag at 6 pounds with scope - snappy bastard it is and too much for his old fellow.
