416-375

is that a 400h&h necked up for a 416 bullet?went over to my gunsmith since he had questions about my 416 rigby build. we decided that it would be too much work to fit into a p14 action. since i have the 416 blank barrel and wanted an English caliber i mentioned the 400H&H not realizing it uses a 411 bullet till i got home.any thoughts ? i don"t mind a wildcat since ill be handloading thought about a hoffman or a taylor

In a medium length action a .416 Chatfield-Taylor would be nice.

416 Rigby will fit nicely in the P14/M17 action. Open to the rear and build a magazine for it. Less work than some other actions.

As to your question, a wild cat. Neck the 400H&H up to 416, Bobs your uncle.

The Taylor was one I had always wanted to build, but never did. I'm a bit old for that now and care not for the increased recoil over my .375/06. It's bad enough.

I've owned a couple of 416 Taylors , it's a great cartridge !!!! I've taken it to Africa a couple of times and can't tell the difference between it and the Rigby on game, even though I load the Taylor a little "lighter" than the Rigby. The beauty of the Taylor is it can be made on a standard Mauser action. Can't go wrong with the Taylor or the Rigby in my opinion.

I believe Remington offers a .416/.375 Imp. called the .416 Remington. The .416 Hoffman, based on the .375 case has also been around for a while. The .416 Ruger has greater capacity than the Taylor and is offered by Hornady. It also fits a .30-06 length magazine.

I have shot quite a bit with the .458, .450 and the .416 Rigby and the 416 always surprises me with its mild recoil. Mine is quite the tack driver as well.

I have used the .416 Rem on more African game than any other caliber as to dangerous game..love that caliber..IMHO, would choose it over a .375H&H or .458 Winchester in most cases..even though I have several rifles in both..always end up grabbing one of the .416's in Rem.

Re: 416-375

I like the 416 Taylor best of all the 416s out there.

Because it fits in a standard length action (or your Enfield too if you'd like) it's a lot less expensive to make a rifle for this cartridge then the larger magnums, and at a given budget (lets say $3000 for an example) you get a nicer gun because you have less in parts, brass and dies and that leaves more for wood and gunsmithing. It illustrate the point, you can start with a $250 action, add a $80 safety, a $75 bolt handle, about $50-$75 worth of smithing on the feed lips, and you are ready to put in the barrel.

If you use the same barrel with the same sights and the same front swivel as you would on a classic 416 Rigby the barrel work costs the same amount to the cent.

If you want to scope the rifles the cost of the base is only $30 and the cost to install it is only about $20

So in other words the action is ready to be barreled at around $500 and the brass is standard 458 Winchester, so it's pretty cheep too. You use the same bullets as the Rigby, Remington, Weahterby, or any other 416. Those bullets still go at the classic speed for the old 416 Rigby, (2350 to 2400 FPS) and it's identical in performance.

The rifle comes in slimmer in many cases then the bigger magnums and can be made a bit lighter if you'd like. This makes for a handier and livelier rifle too. Easier to shoulder fast and easier to carry around the action.

I own a classic 404 Jeffery made with the "pregnant fish" magazine and I really like it because its made the old fashioned way the Brits made the big guns from the 1910 to 1920 era, and it looks cool. They just scream of the classic era of Africa. So to the fat 416 Rigbys.

But for actual hunting I have to admit, the standard size actions carry better and handle faster.

The .416 Taylor can be built in to a light rifle on a standard length action, my own weighs 8.5lbs with 24" barrel. Easy to load a bit lighter as well!

Re: 416-375

.416 Remington Magnum would be a good choice - easy brass and plenty of load data.

I want a Remington 700 in .416 rem mag some day, and a Winchester 70 in .458 win mag

One of the .416's I have is a "custom shop" Remington --heavier 22" barrel...love that gun..very accurate, easy to shoot and quick handling in the thick stuff...

You can also consider the 416 Ruger on an '06 length action, otherwise extend the magazine and go for either the 416 Rem or Rigby.

Think that is an excellent idea as well..wanted to get one of those when they first became available with the synthetic stock stainless..never got me hands on one..

Re: 416-375

I look forward to it.

And me too! Would love a ruger in 416 ruger with synthetic and stainless. Different, affordable (relatively) and fun.
