WOW..thx for posting this..should be a great read...

Curious to read the chapter on 375H&H..just got done using a .375H&H only for an entire safari in W Africa. up to this point have always used either 416 or 458..have to say I am extremely pleased...it truly is all that it is claimed to be..a true all around caliber for anything in Africa..never felt undergunned...and when things got a bit touchy, loaded solids...really flat shooting which was only needed twice--but in both those was really needed...

Take care

Good stuff here. The section on 8-bore rifles is very interesting as is most all of it. I read the whole thing in a single sitting, skipping only the chapter on wildcats (sorry Darryl:)

Wow. My plans for the day abruptly changed when I saw this. Great reading.

In the 458 win chapter you can read the story, in his own words, about his famous encounter with the Cape buffalo that resulted in him getting hurt. Contrary to what many have claimed, he did not blame the 458 win mag cartridge at all, only his poor shooting.

Thanks John

I bought my original copy in 1983, and it is in far worse condition.

I was fortunate to buy one in great condition off Amazon a few years ago, for far less than they are being sold for now. Also have the later one.

Hello Nitrox,

Thanks so much for posting this.

Last year I purchased the rifle that is shown on page 80; That "Special Touch". Its nice to have this electronic copy as a reference. (so I don't wear out the pages in my original book)

Jack built the rifle for G&A editor Howard French, who also wrote about it in the 1986 edition of Gun Digest Hunting Annual.

Hey John!

Thanks so much for posting this. I quit buying gun magazines awhile ago because all the articles seem to be about "AR" this or "Hyper-velocity" that. When this magazine came out, who would have believed that a "Custom" rifle costing thousands of dollars would be a blue-printed Remington 700 action in high-tech, synthetic stock! While there are still a few excellent, custom gun makers around who know how to build a true "best quality" rifle, I fear the days of figured walnut and blued steel are numbered.

Don't get me wrong. I can appreciate what a useful and accurate tool a modern rifle can be. However, to my way of thinking, they just don't have any soul....

Agree wholeheartedly - but - if hunting in inclement weather- ie: BC or worse, Alaska, one might well put up with stainless steel and Tupperware stocks - or work feverishly on your rifle every day with Rig or something similar.

Very true Daryl. Function should be above all else.

I must admit I do feel a bit apprehensive using a nicely finished gun on a rainy day, especially one that has been around for a few decades or more and has remained in tip top condition. But then I remind myself that guns are made to be used and that even the those of the highest quality are designed with function foremost in mind. So, I use them and take care of them and enjoy them.

Re: "Big Bore Rifles" by Jack Lott

Thanks to 93x64mm for sending me all these PDFs TWICE! I thought I had lost the first USB stick, opened the second one he sent me, and found it only had two files nothing to do with this stuff. Then double checked and found the USB stick opened automatically to a folder and not the root. And thanksfully all the files were there. Spent about 5 to 6 hours loading it all up on the net and forums, and making a few "pretty" jpegs as illustrations ...

But would not exist in the first place without "93x64mm" for sending the files and scans in the first place. Thanks go to him.

Now all the parasite websites and forums can steal it from NE and load it up on their sites without acknowledgement like usual ....

Well then, many thanks for 9.3x64---great job....

I actually printed it off and plan to take it with me in the plane on Thursday..have about 9 hours to kill, this will certainly help..

Re: "Big Bore Rifles" by Jack Lott

I have to apologise Gentlemen for the condition of the whole article! It was not of good quality or properly done; but if I didn't get it done soon it might have been too late to save it all together as my book is literally falling apart & pages are tearing if you're not careful.
So to all you out there that have been chasing this gem from Jack Lott, at least you have a copy of sorts & where I got the idea to make up a 9.3x64mm Brenneke - from Jack's notes in this very book!
Yes it does outdo the .375H&H - sorry I couldn't help myself there on page 39 RH bottom corner!
Enjoy
93x64mm

PS: Finally got it to you Buckstix, sorry for the wait!

I also bought my copy in 1983. It's a great read for sure.
My copy has been read and handled quite a lot, and it started to fall apart and needed a sticky tape quick fix.

Here's mine.

It's awesome to have a copy of this on the forum.
Thanks 93x64mm.

Re: "Big Bore Rifles" by Jack Lott

I was re-reading the account of George Grey's fatal lion encounter with a .280 Ross. There is no mention of bullets or ammo, but I suppose he was using expanding bullets that broke up badly on impact when he fired - first at 25 yards, then at 5 yds. There is no mention of where the bullets struck either, probably because the lion was shot up by Grey's hunting companions immediately afterward and all thoughts were on trying to save Grey. No one was interested in a post mortem on the lion, understandably.

Assuming the shots struck the lion in the head or face, do you suppose a 7x57 with 175 grain solids would have done the job? If not, then what would have? Just curious to know the thinking on this one. I personally think two accurate strikes with 7x57 solids would have saved Grey's life.

Re: "Big Bore Rifles" by Jack Lott

I have read somewhere else what the bullets were in the Grey incident. From memory they were not suitable for a lion, at least a thoroughly riled lion that is presenting a rapidly increasing frontal shot, lighter and poorly constructed.

I guess the long-for-caliber 7x57mm had immense penetration and if placed accurately did the job, especially solids such a Bell used.

Will try and find other information about the Ross Grey used.

Re: "Big Bore Rifles" by Jack Lott

After acquiring a .280 Ross sporter myself recently, I reacquainted myself with the early history of the cartridge and rifle. Grey's first shot at 25 yards struck the shoulder, and the second shot at 5 yards struck the jaw.
Unfortunately the jaw, and specifically the teeth, are able to turn away even heavy nitro express bullets in some circumstances.

A high-velocity small-bore was probably a poor choice for stopping an angry lion, but Grey was undoubtedly a bit unlucky on the day.

Apologies for side-tracking the thread, interesting stuff!

I still have my original copy. The pages have been yellowing for years, but it's still in decent shape after all this time. It's amazing how much the info it contains is still relevant.

My original copy is in our hunting camp and has also been much read and handled. Fortunately I found another online at a used book store for $15 that is in like new shape.
I see now many shops are asking as much as $350 !! for the issue. Seeing it here is a treat as folks can actually read Jack's own words written shortly after incidents happened rather than what some gun journalist speculated and has then been repeated by others.

I found this copy at a small book store for only $20.

My rifle is shown on page 80; That "Special Touch". As mentioned earlier, Jack built the rifle for G&A editor Howard French.
