I'm writing an article on stopping rifles and preparing for a self guided jungle Elephant hunt in Cameroon this winter, followed by Rhino immediately after.
Here's some of my favoured simple practice regimen, using .375, .450 Rigby, .470 Nitro, and .505 Gibbs from the shooter's point of view. Wore a head mount camera for the shoot, hope you enjoy.

That was cool - jam was nasty- jumped out sideways in the rails - no controlled feed. Well done with the Merkel DR - it did work well for you! Love the PING of the empties in slo-mo.

Thanks Daryl, the jam was nasty and immediately put me off that lovely little .450. I had actually anticipated it would be tied for my favourite, big letdown. The .470 certainly works for me, feel like I can snap shoot butterflies with that thing.

You handle recoil like the beasts you'll be firing at!
Would love to see more of that .505 Gibbs, photos?
If i was having a 505 done i'd do the RSM route, did you get the original barrel rebored?
Details, if you can be so kind to share, please!

Thanks, it is a custom belonging to a friend and unfortunately I don' think have much for details. A fellow here in Canada rebored it, and another did the action work, the end result is a truly wonderful rifle. I've got a thick set of shoulders and stop recoil quickly, which is both a blessing and a curse I suspect.

I have never hunted dangerous game but the old soldier in me was looking with a critical eye. Hopefully, you will not be offended by this suggestion. When practicing with repeaters you should get in the habit of reloading after your two shots instead of stopping with an empty in the chamber.

Yes, for two shots. But for three or four shots there is no question which is the faster double or bolt... Assuming, of course you are using a tapered, easily chambering round and your rifle does not tend to mis-feed. There is a lot to be said for the old style cartridges with their long sloping cases.

That's a really good point..to reload immediately that is..
As to the 2 shots being a limiting factor, in my travels to Africa and hunting any of the big 5 or 7 or whatever number is the one today..frankly, as Nitro suggested, you won't get off more than 2 shots period..you are in too close and in thick bush..May be a different story possibly in some other areas but that has been my experience. Can see the point, but ...

Regardless of two shots versus three or more, to me it is imprudent not to reload if you have one in the magazine. A rifle that isn't loaded is only good for poking at something. An empty in the chamber is useless and would slow you down should you need another for whatever reason, even hunting deer. Have we not heard stories of hunters who aimed at quarry and squeezed the trigger only to find out they forgot to reload?
Ardent is rightly doing what all shooters should but most do not - training. People tend to perform in real situations as they have drilled in training. If one has a "favoured simple practice regimen" it should always include ejecting the empty and loading the next round because that is what you should do in the field.

Good points, all of them. We all fall back on our training under stressful situations. Lack of any training, promotes panic, confusion and sometimes, merely standing there watching the bear charge, mouth hanging open, working the bolt and emptying the rifle's rounds out onto the ground, thinking while panic stricken that they are actually shooting the bear.
Phil S. has probably seen this in Alaska as well as the 2 incidents I know of right here in B.C. Grizzly's can have that effect - I suspect a leopard, lion or buff would be even more terrifying.
The same sort of following your training has happened when policemen were shot while putting empties in their pocket, just as they did on the range, instead of dumping fired brass and reloading. Thankfully, training has changed, even with the wheel-gun shooters.

These discussions are always a bit subjective IMO, but interesting.
If one assumes the user is experienced and practiced with the rifles.
A double rifle will always be faster than anything else with two shots.
A bolt action will will be slower for the first two shots, but probably faster for four shots. Assuming the rifle has a magazine of three or four cartridges. I think some of these new modern bolt actions with only two round magazines are a waste of time.
A single shot will always be the slowest.
Of course some individuals will be excellent with their chosen rifle, eg maybe faster than many even with a single shot. The same person would assumedly be faster with a double rifle and bolt action too if they put in the effort.
I assume the shots are all aimed shots.
Sometimes these debates are based on silly arguments. I remember years and years ago reading a supposed expert gun writer in a magazine claiming a bolt action was better than a double rifle for dangerous game. His "logic" - the double rifle will probably be chambered in a big bore calibre and have considerable recoil, so the recoil will affect its speed of firing, so a bolt action is better ??? Funny how his logic ignored the bolt action if comparable would also be chambered in a big bore calibre and also have similar recoil!!!
Some gun writers seem to lack pretty simple logical reasoning !

Great video, thanks for sharing. Your experience with the Merkel 470 is the same as mine, reliable, accurate and fast. I have a review video on mine on YouTube, if interested, search 'gwh375' and it will come up. The Ruger RSMs are certainly a reliable rifle too.

A fast aimed second shot in this rifle, was 8 seconds, when I was in practice, that is and using a paper ctg. for the second shot - 14 bore, 6+ drams (165gr.2F), 482gr. round ball.
