.416 Rigby on BREVEX 400 action PH rifle, recently completed
|
Some pictures of a real working rifle we have just completed.
The focus was primarily on strength and perfect reliability.
Even if it is not visible externally the Brevex 400 action has been substantially modified and optimized.
You will notice the magnum extractor blade and new bolt handle among the numerous modifications to the original system.
Finally, the wood, a well seasoned blank of French walnut, was chosen more for its mechanical qualities than for its figures.
This BREVEX is not intended for shooting with a scope so the stock has been designed to help instinctive shooting.

Very nice. Has a much slimmer look than alot of the boxy 416 Rigbys that you see these days. I much prefer the nice grained stock to the highly figured ones also. If I wrote an encylopedia I would use that as an illustration of my idea of a perfect working rifle.

Very nice indeed, if it had a flip up ghost ring at the rear, even better but the guy who ordered it undoubtedly has better eyesight than me, lovely work as always. I still keep thinking of that .22 you made, off the planet ! best

Exquisite. As always. You truly carve the prettiest cheekpiece of anyone in the business. Love the wood details around the bolt handle and ejector! Likewise, your distinctive grip checkering. The metal work and case colors are tasteful and not over the top like so many others. Truly top rate!
A few questions, if I may:
-What are your opinions of the Brevex compared to original Mauser magnum actions and the new Mauser magnum actions?
-Is the front sight base made in house?
-What barrel did you use? Which barrel maker do you prefer?
-At what distance did you sight this 416?

Brevex in Suresnes, was created in the fifties by Mr. Polonsky, an engineer from Radom.
On Oberndorf machines which were repatriated during the occupation of the factory by the French troops and obtained from the MAS, he created two magnum actions, the M.300 for .375 H&H Magnum Rimless type cartridge and M.400 specially adapted to the .416 Rigby, .505 Gibbs and the like.
There are many differences between the Brevex and the Mauser magnum action, but the general mechanism is the same, even if not too many parts are interchangeable.
The Brevex is cruder but tougher than the Mauser and it need much more work to complete nicely.
In my opinion, it's the best action to build a professional rifle even if I like a lot also the old ZKK602.
Our front sights are made in house from a Recknagel blank.
On that Brevex .416 it's the plainest version of that kind of sight as, usually, we go further in the modeling of the ramp.
We use Lothar-Walther, Heym and Border barrels, depending of the project.
That particular .416 has been sighted at 50/100/150 meters.

Very nice indeed. I too prefer plainer functional timber over highly figured wood. The wood to metal finish is superb and your colour case hardening work is first rate.
My preference would be for a peep sight as well, even when my eyes were younger. Also I would have a second cross bolt fitted, firstly because I like the look of 2 cross bolts and secondly because of the CZ550 stocks that split without it. I would of liked to see ever so slightly more wood relieved from behind the action tang, but that might just be the photo.
Is there any reason a second cross bolt was not fitted?
How many 416 Rigby rounds down does the magazine hold?
The stipling on top of the action to cut glare is very functional and looks great. This is one 416Rigby that screems to be taken to Africa.A job very well done.

However you couldn't compare an hand made rifle to a production one and indeed, on that Brevex wood has been relieved from behind the action but as the tang is filled with a 60° angle that's not visible from outside.
When, as on this rifle, the magazine is made from one piece of steel we don't need to put a second cross bolt while this is mandatory on a two or three parts magazine with sheet metal box like the CZ 550.
Notice also that the most important thing is how the action front recoil lug is fitted and that the cross bolts aren't decorative fixtures.
The massive magazine box holds five rounds.

Dorleac, May I ask what you mean by " tougher" ??
"The Brevex is cruder but tougher " than the Mauser and it need much more work to complete nicely.

Eric, when I write "tougher" I just want to say that these actions are homogeneously harder than the original Oberndorf Magnum MAUSER.
In fact BREVEX are very close to the last BYF44, having received a heat treatment deeper and less differentiated.
Considering the relatively crude surface, finishing work is more challenging but constant external hardness is preserved.
Also note that only a slow rust bluing must be used, hot salts baths resulting invariably in inconsistent colors turning dark red.

Just lovely!
As a work rifle this would also be a great rifle style in 458LOTT.
The only thing I would do different is a flip up moon sight with fold over hood.
Hood to protect during work time and flip up bead in lieu of folding over one to reduce the chance of it folding up partly by accident, particularly when pushing through folage.
