Removing express sights from BRNO ZKK602
|
I want to remove the express sights so I can add an NECG peep.
I seem to remember that the base is tapered so you need to drift out the sights from one side to the other. I don't particularly want to take the chance of going the wrong way so does anyone out there know which way it is.

This is the rear sight we're talking about?
No, it won't be tapered......just a tight fit. It is made to be able to be drifted left or right and still be held tightly. If it were tapered it would be super tight one way and loose the other.

Dovetail sights are usually tapped out to the right side (from the left side). This way, they remain tight. If removed from one side, then the other, there can or will be enlargement of the dovetail and the dovetail slot will loosen.
We do this with muzzleloading rifle sights, both front and rear. I see no reason to change this for modern rifles.

Don't forget that there is a screw to loosen first - maybe obvious, but hasn't been mentioned in this thread so far

I have a PDF exploded parts view of the ZKK602. The rear sight does not appear to be tapered and as mauserand9mm points out there is a "safety" screw recessed in the front of the sight block which will have to be loosened before attempting to drift the sight out.

Ha! - forgot about the screw - but we do always knock them out the same side- back in that side - every time.
Also- there is a commercial "sight pusher" that may or may not fit.

Done this on all my CZ/Brno to fit Recknagel (NECG) peeps. Just loosen the screw and tap the sight out, it does not matter from which side except for the sake of convention.
Then, if you have time on your hands, make yourself a steel plate that just fills the sight base flush and tap it in place, that will feel more comfortable when handling the rifle - the edges left when the express sight is off are rather sharp.
In my experience the NECG sights tend to be high, and you may have to change the front sight as well. Try a red fiber optic sight, you'll be amazed by its visibility and how fast you get it on target.
For fast and close work, you may want to drill out the aperture to make more of a "ghost ring", 2.5mm should be enough. But for normal hunting/shooting, leave it as it is.
Also, I smooth all the sharp corners on the sight's "wings"... These are deadly for your knuckles and thumb web!
These are extremely well made and sturdy sights, you'll like them!

Recknagel also make different height bead front sights. The standard CZ bead is 6.3mm tall, and the Recknagels go up in 0.5mm increments from 6.5 to 9.5mm, if I recall correctly. They also make a 10mm tall post. The Recknagel beads are larger than the CZ standard and available in different colours.
When I fitted the NECG ghost ring to my CZ in 458, the standard CZ bead was spot on, but I needed a taller front sight on my CZ in 375 (it shot high with the NECG and standard front bead).

Here are the mods I've done to the sight and rifle:
Streamlined the wings on the rear of the sight, removed the sharp corners, smoothed the angles, drilled the peep to 2.5mm (I tried 3mm on other sights, but 2.5 seems to be the right balance of large aperture/ghost ring visibility)
Filed and installed a dovetail steel plate to replace the missing express sights
Installed a fiber optic front sight. Once you use one of these, you won't go back to standard beads...
The fiber front is a Recknagel sight, I have several of them but am not happy with their coarsness (2.5mm rod) and fragility (they don't take direct hits kindly). I have made a stronger sight with a 1.5mm rod for a .375, and will post pictures of the one I'm making for this rifle when done.

Here is the revised sight, made out of a Patridge sight with recesses filed in, and drilled through. Fiber rod is 1.5mm vs 2.5, overall width 2.5mm vs 3.2, and most importantly the flimsy rings holding the fiber are replaced by much stronger solid steel.

Kano: thanks for the photos & explanation of your work. I've got a BRNO 602 in .375, and if I ever wanted it set up for iron-sight shooting w/ a rear aperture/ghost ring, I'd want it done just like yours. Thanks!
