.585 Nyati

A friend just picked up this .585 Nyati from Ralf Martini in Cranbrook.
Beautiful craftsmanship. Rifle sites are spot on at 50 and 100 yards. 750 gr/2500. Recoil is not harsh but inevitable, much like my 8 Bore.
Weight is 13.5 pounds with two Mercury recoil reducers in stock. Two recoil lugs, island rear and ramp front are all machined from barrel stock.
The drawback I see is time to get back on target with a new round loaded before you get run over.

Sorry, I moved the files after I posted them.
Should add it is a Granite Mountain Arms Action and is smooth as butter and loads as slick as snot.

Nice gun, with out the muzzle break I`ll bet you will feel "some" recoil. I`ve tested the 577 t-rex, but I did not buy it..

I believe it is a 500 Jeffery necked up to .584. 500 grains has some 900 grain bullets for it that would be interesting. The rifle will probably be loaded to 1900fps with 750 grain bullets. Same as the .577 2 3/4 loading. That is plenty for anything in Africa for sure.

I shot it once only without the muzzle break. The man who owns it only had two rounds left after sighting in. It is really not as bad as one would assume. A very hard push but nothing like a 460 WB. Much more like a 505 Gibbs.

I see this thread refers to a .577 Nyati. I had not heard of this cartridge, but looking at the photos I see the barrel is inlayed in gold .585 Nyati. I have heard of the latter.
I believe the .585 Nyati is based upon the .600 Nitro case with the rim turned off, recut to rimless form, necked down to accept slugs for the .577 and maybe shortened. It was created by Ross Seyfried if I remember correctly.

My mistake in the title. It is a 585 Nyati.
Ross recommended against the rifle, citing feeding problems in his and excessive recoil. (it takes a long time to get recycled and back on target. 3-4 seconds I would guess.)
The brass is from Harold Wolf and I believe Bertram also makes brass.
500 grains had one once also so he could answer questions about the cartridge.

Igorrock - that sounds right as I remember the article - even picture Ross shooting it.
Good-on-ya, Mick - not for this old, broken man to shoot, that's for sure. I'm starting to cringe at 270gr. running 2,700fps. You couldn't get me to shoot a .505 either.
I was talking to a fellow at our local gun show the first week of May, who was selling barrels, actions and barreled actions in that calibre. I assume he got them from Ralf.

I have Seyfrieds original article around here somewhere.I dont think the original rifle had any special recoil reducers other than a pad.Wow in this case it would seem that you were getting almost as much as you were giving out.

My entry into the megabore. A 585 Nyati 2.8 inch as Ross designed. Built by SSK 17 years ago on a 460wby action single stacked with an extended magazine. Hold two down and one in the chamber. It will feed all bullets to include the flat nose barnes and the CEB non cons. Oh, it also shoots 1 1/2" three shot groups off the bench!

Whats the recoil figures with and without the break? I imagine even with the break you would be looking at 100+ft/lbs

I sold that monster. A 13 pound rifle is more than I can handle on a stalk. And follow up shots are slow with that much recoil. I also sold my .600 NE. I spent the money on more elephants.

I just returned from Alaska. My wife and I did a 100 mile self guided river float trip on the Kanektok river. So our vaction time is used up for this year. However, I have plans to harvest a bison this fall with to fill the freezer. The possibly Africa next year.
