.458 Super Express try out

Took the new purchase,a Winchester super express out for its sight in and maybe get a pig with it. It shot well with 500 woodleighs spot on at 50m . 350 hornadys were shooting about 4 inches to the left. So Ill stick to the 500's.
Went to the floodplain for a quick look and found a mob in some thick stuff , pushed my luck in close trying to single out a boar and blew the mob. As they were rushing past me I shot a sow at about 2m.
The rounds all fed smoothly. Recoil is less than my old mark X . Cant wait to try it out on buff. heres a pic Mick

Re: .458 Super Express try out

Fat boy - heres some more pics. Im only loading 3 rounds. Feed is smooth. Put a comparison photo in with the old 264 on top. super express in 458 middle and the new winchester featherweight in 300 win mag.
The super express has a sweat cary mark from safari days in Rhodesia. Its not as bad as I expected. ( carried by the barrel)
I quized the previous owner as to the rifles history. He was using it for big game target shooting and the owner before him had been a guide in Rhodesia. I would like to know more.....
It has been looked after and has minor work marks on it. It will see me out.
Loads used were from my previous 458, Im not going to change the 500 grain load, its worked in the past and is accurate enough in the winchester. Mick

Re: .458 Super Express try out

Thank Mick.

How does the feather weight shoot?.

A mate just bought one in 30-06 and I'm impressed with its fit,Finnish and how it shoots. I think they are good value, just wish they did some more calibers.

Re: .458 Super Express try out

Fatboy- the feather weight shoots good and is a nice package. The trigger is excellent. Same thoughts on the calibre options.
Went with the 300wm after trying to find a Winchester in 338 after waiting for a year. A Month later a secondhand M70 in 338 turned up. Couldnt help myself......
Enjoying both at the moment. Mick

Nice work Mick, now all you need is a 7x57 featherwieght or something similar just because you can!

Re: .458 Super Express try out

I have one of the Hartford control feed M70 in 375H&H. I love it. Truely, a great gun. And now, cash in hand ready to buy if they decide to offer the gun in some caliber, I either dont already have, or would like an upgrade. For instance my POS CZ in 458Lott or a 404 Jeff Top two that that head my list. Ok, I dont need another big bore, at least not as much as I assume Winchester could use the profits -- I cannot be alone in this.

I believe from all reports (and personal experience) this is a reintroduced great gun. I wish they could expand the offerings. You would think with all the CNC machinery and parts interchangeability more caliber offerings (and not custom shop prices) would be an easy thing. Maybe the caliber of the year, one limited edition each year? Limit to a 1000 (or ??) to attract the NIB collector types? I bet they could sell a limited run of 300H&H if the barrel contour was lighter. How about 300 and 340 Weatherby? The 404 might be extra effort (for sure), but a run of any std belted mag should be a piece of cake. There are some big metrics, if they really wanted to take a gamble.

A stainless Alaskan, something different at least.

just a thought....on a lazy afternoon.....

I would giggle like a little kid if they offered a stainless .404 Jeffery.
