Any one know how to calculate recoil energy?

I would like to calculate out what kind of recoil ft/lbs my rifle is producing and at what rearward velocity.
I am shooting a 9.8LB rifle with 97g of powder and 400g bullets at 2510fps.
What I did was load up my 416 Rigby (Ruger RSM) untill I could not take it any more to find my limit. This is a bit more recoil than I feel I could or should regularly take. The reason I would like to know the numbers is I am planning on buying a double and want to be sure I am not going to go into silliness in the recoil department.
I know that there are many factors in "felt" recoil such as stock design, bbl weight and length but I would just like to get an idea of the actual calculated recoil. Then compare it to things like the 470, 450-400, 500-416, even the 500 at the usual weights these guns are made at. It's not perfect science but fun none the less.

For the numbers you've listed, you're looking at around 66 ft. lbs. @ 21 FPS. Fairly stout, I'd say.

By my calculations your rifle will recoil at 21.3fps with an energy of 69ftlbs

pinotguy, you beat me by a few minutes while I was writing an excel formula for the recoil velocity and energy for a gun.

I've used the beartooth online calculator in the past too.
I would LOVE to put some of these formulae up on NE as online calculators too.
Anyone know how to do it?

That's pretty cool with the Bear-tooth formula - My 14 bore rb gun somes out at 50 foot pounds recoil, at 19fps speed.
the .375/06IMp comes out at 39foot pounds at 17fps.

Thanx for that. It is easy to use and perfect for messing around.
I am also trying to develop a very low recoiling 7-08 load for a kid's gun, and this is great for that job too. Trying to get it down to about 243 type recoil, looks possible.

If you just have a calculator with you and no computer bullet weight in grains x velocity in ft per second x velocity in ft. per second all divided by 450,300 this gives you energy in ft.lbs.
