I was in Umfalozi Game Park in kwaZulu Natal yesterday and stopped to take a picture of this bull about 50-60 yards aff. . Right after taking this picture, I got the dreaded full card warning from the digital camera. Then I get the dead battery warning only to look up to see the elephant coming straight at us. He stopped about 20 yards off with both ears spread wide and ripped a small bush out of the ground and tossed it aside. He was so close we could here him breathing. We decide to leave! I wasn't scared, just pissed because I forgot to bring the spare camera and missed an awesome picture! |

Yes, that was a bluff charge. Ripping up the bush was a show of strength but also anxiety. The ears out were a show of size. Leaving was a good thing to do. Were you on foot or in a car? If you had stuck around, only three possibilities; one a stand off, two he turns and leaves; three he comes on. In my limited experience, with bulls its more likely one or two but enough of a chance of number three to back out - for sure. JPK |
