Best of the SCI/Reno show

1. Best new double offering: Searcy Classic. At $12.5K, it offers a slimmer profile than before, and comes in a downsized 450-400 version. Case coloring and wood work were beautiful.

2. Best selection of used doubles: Westley Richards. It is still possible to get a vintage British double for less than $20K, but not for long.

3. Best new book: Ndlovu by Richard Harland. It is about elepant hunting and available through both African Hunter and Rowland Ward.

4. Best new video: Buzz Charlton's "Hunting the African Elephant". It is a video that teaches elephant hunting. Most hunting videos just string together a bunch of random footage.

5. Best of the best quality gunmakers: Peter Hofer of Austria. He had a fantastic 22 Hornet double, and some equisite 4 barreled creations.

6. Best takedown DGR: Joe Smithson. It uses a GMA action. Square threads retain headspace and a unique locking mechanism makes it very easy to use.

7. Best QD scope mounts: Joe Smithson.

8. Best non-takedown rifle: Ryan Breeding. GMA action, with complete attention paid to both functionality and aesthetics.

9. Worst bullshit: A guy at the Barnes booth claimed that GS Custom's HV bullet is a copy of the Barnes Triple Shock even though the GS Custom bullet was being sold in the market at least 12 years prior to the Triple Shock making its appearance.

10. Worst ethics: SCI let Out of Africa exhibit again.

I know I have seen his QD mounts before, but is there a new web page and are they widely available, or a limited production special order item? I see them listed on Blackburn's web site and only for FN Mauser and Win Model 70 -- is that still current?

Looks like I need to add Buzz's video to the list of things I should try to pick up on Friday in Dallas, if it will be there.

Re: Best of the SCI/Reno show

Sounds like the show was top notch as usual. I haven't been to the show since it moved back to Reno. It sounds like Butch has a real winner on his hands

Re: Best of the SCI/Reno show

Charles,

THe Smithson mounts require that your double square bridge receiver be specially machined for them. When building a rifle on the GMA action, the Smithson mounts add $600 to the cost compared to no mounts, but are on par with machining the receiver to accept Talleys, and cost less than claw mounts.

Buzz will be at Dallas with his video and hunts still available (when I left he had a hunt for 5 cow ele and a sable/PG hunt still available).

Re: Best of the SCI/Reno show

Thanks for the information on the mounts -- looks like a great option when building a new rifle.

I'm going to have to try to get to/through DSC before a busy weekend. Hopefully I can get enough work done to get away early on Friday.

Re: Best of the SCI/Reno show

FYI,

I received an email from Buzz today, double checking that I was on for an elephant hunt with him. He mentioned that he was sold out on elephants if I was on. I confirmed I was up for it so I believe he is sold out.

Re: Best of the SCI/Reno show

I saw the ammo holders but was a bit annoyed that they only held 7 rounds. Don't see how a DR enthusiast like MS wouldn't make it an even number, especially with the NE cartridges. They were good quality though. Didn't see the knife rig. What was it.

Bulldog,

The knife rig was a Knive's of Alaska camp knife with a nice stacked leather sheath. It had their newest steel. Very cool.
