Frist African Safari-- 375 vs 416 vs 458???

https://www.outdoorlife.com/story/hunting/best-big-bores-for-your-first-african-safari/

Maybe your African safari is just a dream at this stage, but you can make it a reality. In fact, I recommend you do. The cost is much less than a guided North American mule deer or elk hunt. So why not edge closer to your dream safari by deciding which African cartridge/rifle you’ll shoot?

Perhaps the most famous African cartridge is the .375 H&H Magnum, but a couple of its offspring, the .416 Remington Magnum and .458 Winchester Magnum, offer more power and heavier bullets. Which would be best? Let’s examine each in depth and then you can pick your winner.

This is true and well worth doing. Particularly for plains game. But NONE of these cartridges are needed for plains game. Add something dangerous and that price comment no longer applies. Also there can be a wide range in prices, from to me unaffordable, to affordable. But is the quality the same, from some free ranging wild hunt for plains game, to a medium sized fenced block where every animal in it is specifically known.

I don't understand why the .416 Rem is included in the article but not the .416 Rigby.

None of these are needed for PG..but, unless I am in a high fence area (unlikely)..I will never have less than a .375H&H on me while out and about hunting in areas like Zimbabwe or other naturally open hunting concessions..even if my main quarry is PG..Each to their own, personally have had more than one close call..and yes the PH was with me and was caught just as off guard as I was..I also trust my shooting more than someone else's..again, each to their own..I have seen alot of PH's shoot..some are good, some, not so much

The article does touch a bit on the 416 Rigby..discussing how the ammo is double or more in cost then the Rem..plus you can get more rounds typically in a Rem than Rigby ..

Think the article is more so focusing on your first safari and thus looking at lower costs..hence the paragraph quoted above discussing costs to Africa vs N American hunts

Not a Safari without a 416Rigby.

Was thinking more like a .404 Jeffrey..

That's the one caliber I don't have and would like to..

Re: Frist African Safari-- 375 vs 416 vs 458???

I haven't used mine a lot, ie.404. I was hoping to with Curl a couple years ago, but nothing taken then.

I tend to use my .450 No.2 NE DR when grunt is needed.

However as my .404 is in an ugly Mauser M03 and a takedown, I can travel with a 8x68S and a .404 on a trip. Even a whole rifle in each if desired. As I have two of them. Also both have a set trigger, and it is very good. I use it with most deliberate shots. Have head shot many dozens of deer with it. And would allow even a .404 to take super accurate sniping shots.

So my armoury might be:
8x68S;
.404 Jeffery;
.450 No.2 NE.

Or:
.30-06;
.375 H&H Mag;
.450 No.2 NE.

Should a wide variety of game be in your sights, the bigger rounds might not be ideal either. Plains game antelope are routinely taken with 338 Win. Mag., various 300 magnums, .30-06, .308 Winchesters and even 6.5 Creedmoors these days. We’re not saying all of these are optimum, but with today’s premium bullets, many PHs prefer clients bring rifles they can shoot precisely rather than big thumpers that make them flinch.

I don’t know the percentage of how many first time hunters in Africa hunt plainsgame, and not dangerous game, but I am willing to bet it is the vast majority. Which in most cases is probably a good thing IMO. With that in mind, and considering what is highlighted in bold, taking a .308win or similar is probably the best advice for the majority of people hunting Africa for the first time. If we want to be realistic.

I don’t know how many PH’s have told me stories about foreign hunters coming to various African countries for the first time with way more gun than they could handle, with the expected results...

Let’s face it, the majority of first time hunters in Africa are generally not like the majority of members here on NE, who have an above average interest in big bores, and the ability to use them well.

A first safari? I brought a .500 NE double on my 1st safari and yes, I knew very well how to use it!! Go big or go home!!!!
In the interest of full disclosure, I also brought a .375 H&H as a plains game gun and a backup rifle in case my ammo didn't arrive at my destination courtesy of the airlines.

For solely plains game hunts, I’d likely bring a .30 caliber such as a .300WSM or maybe a .375 H&H.. The future will tell what I do.

Think a 500 double and 375H&H would be a great combo..my first was a 416Rem and a 300 Rum..in fact I used that combo on my first 5..

Sixth, I just brought one..375H&H..like you I was worried I would not get my ammo in Cameroon..ironically I was correct..my ammo never showed up..

Depending what I was hunting..if headed back for buff to somewhere like Tanzania I'd being my 470 double and the same 375H&H.. IMHO, the 375H&H is a great PG gun, and enough ME should things go south..

Re: Frist African Safari-- 375 vs 416 vs 458???

I brought a .375 and a double .450/400 3» for my first safari which was for dangerous game and some plains game as bonus.

If I were going on a stricktly plains game safari with brush and thick scrub, I’d still go with my .375. I guess most hunters will be able to shoot a .375 as good as a .30-06 as long as they practice. Second choice would be 9,3x62 then a .30-06. Good hunting cartridges start with .30.... I have shot numerous deer with 6,5s and .243. They do die, but give little report as to where they get hit. On a hunt that I pay fees, I’d rather whack ‘em than slap ’em....

My recoil limit is about 450/400 - any more than that gets unpleasant....

I find a .375 and 450/400 about equal with regards to perceived recoil. Fast and lighter vs slower and heavier. I tolerante better the latter. I’d much rather shoot the mentioned ones than any of the 300 or 338 magnums....
