CATTLE RANCHING, NORTHERN BOTSWANA.
CATTLE RANCHING, NORTHERN BOTSWANA.

Over the past 35 years, Botswana’s rural population has declined considerably, due mostly to the economic lure of urban life.

However, around 50% of the country’s total still lives in rural areas and arable farming is the major source of income.

80% of Botswana’s 582,000 km2 land area is covered by the Kalahari Desert but only 5% is suitable for arable agriculture and less than 1% is under cultivation.

Agriculture comprises a mere 2.4% of GDP, but it is vital to the livelihoods of the country’s rural populace. The livestock industry has been supported for many years by subsidies from the European Union in order to access that market, but certain conditions, including disease control, have to be met.

This short video looks at the trials and tribulations that stock farmers in Northern Botswana face.

Agreed..

Perhaps they need to establish areas where the elephant/lions are not be allowed to exist?? IF they want the cattle ranchers to be able to exist .. as it seems co-existence is not feasible in these areas..

As well, other areas where cattle are not allowed to exist..only game such as elephants, lions, etc..

I have heard this same story since my first time to Africa almost 16 years ago.. it will remain so unless changes are made...

After all, is that not the definition of insanity?? Doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result..

Elephants area problem all over the world (even in Asia) for humans & in some areas even the environment !

There really aren't any to speak of where I guided & hunt but they have still destroyed a lot of the forest along the Limpopo on both sides (and there's not much there) & fence's when they come to visit, by the time any one gets a DCA permit the Elephants are destroying some else's place or headed back to Botos !

Now Lions are VERY hard to find when they call over but are being controlled/eliminated by ever one & mostly the Blacks who are the biggest buyers of Agriculture Pesticide in Africa from Kenya to Botswana

Just a little sprinkling of Temik (Two Step) & the whole pride is gone, problem over & never a Hated Trophy Hunter to be seen & the Greenies never see it or the Hundreds of thousands of snares set ever day Killing & maiming indiscriminately !
