Lunatic Line II

The Chinese are planning on building a railroad between Mombasa and Nairobi. I wonder if they have read Patterson's "Man Eaters of Tsavo".

Sounds to me like a Chinese Government owned rail line for transporting poached ivory & rhino horn, untouchable by local game branches - Chinese property.

Re: Lunatic Line II

When I was hunting in the Selous Game Refuge in Tanzania, back in 1972, the Chinese were building a railroad there as well. We used to drive past their work parties almost every day. Interestingly they were using concrete cross ties (sleepers), something I had never seen before.

After the reunification of Germany, the East German rail lines had to be rebuilt because they were using concrete cross ties made with sand dredged from the North Sea, and the salt content was rusting out the reinforcing rods, or so my former brother-in-law, who was high up in the Bundesbahn at the time, told me.

Didn't Rhodes want to do something similar?

The bit about the effect of salt water sand in the cement for the sleeps sounds correct. My father was a Civil Engineer so got to learn a few do's and don't. That was one of them.

Re: Lunatic Line II

Having taken the train from Nairobi to Mombasa, I am sure it already exists ....

But a modern modern Chinese owned railroad duplicating the existing one, means they can control it. Maybe has some abilities the old line can not handle.

I also know the shortcuts Chinese infrastructure projcts take in the third world, having seen Chinese built highways in Sri Lanka. Hated by th locals, it cuts across rivers, mountains, hillsides etc without any environmental concerns, or worry about future landslides. Western companies would not get away with the crap the Chinese build on the cheap ...

John, thanks for that.

I thought that rail road already existed and was now thinking I had the wrong line. Started thinking Alzheimer's was kicking in.

Shared a cabin with two Kiwis down to Mombasa who were later going to Uganda. Uganda was still raw and untouristy in those days. They had a friend there. In 1989 not sure how long Idi Amin had been gone or maybe Obote was just gone? I wanted to join them.

On the way back shared a cabin with a black gentleman from Uganda.

The train had a white table cloth dining car, and waiters which stuck in their fingers into the glasses and threw empty bottles out of the windows. Snoobabs.

Patterson and the Maneaters of Tsavo comes from the building of the Lunatic Line pre WW1.

The original line went from Mombasa via Nairobi to Lake Victoria and was supposed and I believe did go all the way to Kampala in Uganda.

My guess is the same as Daryl's , they will use it to smuggle Ivory and Rhino horn out of the Country.
