Plains game

I posted this on AR, just wanted to see what you guys think(and to spark up some conversation).

6.5x55, 140gr projectile(barnes X) for game up to and including Kudu.

A few people suggested .270, but a 140gr 6.5 pill will out penitrate a 130 and 150gr pill, being of higher SD.

What about the 7x57? It was suggested in the heavy bullets, 175gr. I think the 140gr would do the same job and a bit quicker to boot.

If the Sweede is considered suitable for moose in some countries, why is it frowned upon for Africa? It will kill the smaller antelope (impala, etc)will kill warthog, after all they're only pigs and I've used this calibre to kill lots of local pigs up to 100kg, I've also used it on donkeys, which I think would be the size of wildebeest?

What are your thoughts

I think if you shoot it well there is no reason that it won't do the job.

Most South Africans use simple and plain calibres such as .308, .303, .30-06, 7x57mm, 8x57mm, and the .243 and of course the good old .375. Usually with heavy to calibre bullets eg 200 and 220 gr in .30, 175 gr in 7mm.

In the bushveld I would think a 160 gr would do well and the 140 gr for the open plains.

The 6.5mm with heavy bullets is known for its excellent penetration.

Go for it!

I don't see you having a probelm with the 6.5 with barnes X as long as you don't take shots over 150 meters and pace the bullets well. Barnes does have enough penetration but not enough whack for a big animal like a kudu at a distance.

With the 7 x57 I would suggest the 175 grainers for bushveld they work well just like the old 303.

Bakes- if I had to make a choice, I would go with the 7X57 with 175 grain bullets of stout construction. The 175's have a much higher sectional density than the 140's. As I wrote on the other forum, I saw a huge Eland shot up the rear with a 175 grain Barnse-X and the bullet was recovered just under the hide of the chest!

Bakes,

I ran into the same sort of thing when I mentioned I would use my .260Rem, when I get over there, for my plains game.
I think that the 6.5's are very easy to shoot and, if you can shoot it well and have confidence in it, I say use it.
Great SD's & BC"S. Thumbs up on the ol' 7mm and 303, proven time and time again.
