My Cape Buffalo has finally arrived!

My Cape Buffalo has finally arrived!

I hunted September or October 2002 and it has arrived only 2 months short of 2 years.

And it looks great! Plus some other goodies.

PS The rest of the heads only arrived in OZ a few months ago and haven't even seen the taxidermists needle yet.

The sun is shining, a photo to come. Here it is.

Sweet. It looks like there was attention to detail around the eyes and even on the neck. Obviously you do not have kids or that zebra would not be on the ground like that . That is an interesting trophy on the left as well. Politician?

Re: My Cape Buffalo has finally arrived!

I'll reply to questions and comments in one post rather than individual thread lines.

***

Kos,

I don't think we ever measured the horns. It was estimated before it was shot. It wasn't estimated as very long but was an old bull with good solid bosses which was my main aim. As the circumstances of trip were eventful and not ideal I was very happy to take and hunt a mature bull.

I am happy with the result. As Matt Graham said on my recent waer buffalo hunt - "If you are happy with what it would look like on the wall ....". And I am very happy with the way with buffalo will look.

Christer,

My water buff will be shoulder mounted as well. Haven't decided its "posture" yet.

Ann,

Now I want to see yours too one day.

475Guy,

Yes very happy. He has a mean look in his eyes. Something to frighten small children with.

Eric,

Mmmm. He will not fit in the planned spot I think. I think an insulated and panelled trophy room/shed/building is in order. But I would like him in my study but too bad.

Mike,

Gary Pegg of Melbourne did the taxidermy of this and all my pevious trophies except for one.

Bakes,

See the next post.

Gibbs and DPhillips,

I hope he isn't house trained. The rest is still to come - another zebra, a second rug this time, two bushbuck, one hopefully full mounted, two more impala, one to be mounted, one to be a skull on a shielf and a waterbuck. See I do need a new building.

On my next safari I want to concetrate on pigs.

Re: My Cape Buffalo has finally arrived!

Some fun photos.

The first photos is a Zulu shield made from cattle hide with
a decorative long assegai and knobkerrie. Not bad quality and
definitely good enough for a wall display.

The second photo is me acting a twit with a buffalo hide (I
think) Maasai shield. I do not have a proper Maasai spear yet
so am making do.

Decorative stabbing assegai and knobkerre with some nice beadwork.

More space needed on walls.

From AdamTayler posting:

No way. John has attacked me many times for being an anarchist. His respect of politicians is too great to have such a trophy on display He just loves law and order.

John, great trophies. Did you get to shoot the buffalo with your 450 No2 Double?

BLOODY HELL that middle one's abit dodgy

I have a mate in Fitzroy crossing getting me some Aborigional hunting and fishing spears with woomera, I'm thinking of an Australiana wall. Post a pic when you set the heads and spears/shields out, should look good!

Re: My Cape Buffalo has finally arrived!

Bakes

I acquired some long throwing spears from Central Australia seven years ago plus some other things, including a wooden "shield" and non-returning boomerangs. At the moment the spears are sitting on top of some curtain rails above a window. Did not get an authentic woomera as I wanted a plain one and they only had painted ones.

What I would really like to get is some of those multi-barbed fishing spears/arrows etc from New Guinea and similar places. THEY look absolutely fantastic.

Why are you wearing clothes in the battle photo? It would be more authentic if you were dressed native.

At the moment ALL of my trophies are filling the lounge room floor having been shifted from Adelaide a few months ago.

I have a shoulder mounted limpopo bushbuck, a shoulder mounted impala and a full mounted chobe bushbuck almost ready to come over from Melbourne too. I think I need to get some up on the walls soon.

G'Day Fella's,

Great to see NitroX and thank you for sharing.

Those Spears look to be Rapid Fire and of a Multi Stab Capacity.
I hope you received approval from the greens (and at least 36 Permits and Licenses for each, from the authorities), before you brought them home.

Re: My Cape Buffalo has finally arrived!

Went back in 2006 to hunt cow elephant and also cape buff.

Shot my first cow ele reasonably quickly and great fun exciting hunt. Getting chased by the herd or at least close to, they just didn't finish it off the chase.

But had a permit for a second cow elephant, and they were this time really hard to find ... so we concentrated on the elephant areas, in the Zambezi valley in the flat lands South of Lake Kariba. The buffalo were supposedly more in the hills up above the escarpment.

Did spot one herd from up on the escarpment ridge one day. Was really fun shadowing them in the bush. Aiming to cut them off and see what was in the herd several times. Made more fun by the two ele bulls sometimes 20 feet in front of us, the wind in our favour, their arses to us, they never knew we were right behind them for may 200 plus metres off and on. As they fed through the forest and bush.

As for cape buff, no good hard bossed bulls in the herd. Good horn LENGTH, the PH said his boss would kill him if he knew what he passed up. I had said NO soft bossed immature bulls.

Had fun times with a herd of elephants in the jess and bush with a swirling winds. Elephants everywhere around us, running in every direction.

Later got my second cow ele, another tuskless cow elephant.

In the end found out I could have shot FOUR elephants. One I knew of, it was a crop raider and a PAC ele. My PH wanted to get my first elke permit filled first before going for it, as the Parks may have insisted the PAC ele was my permited ele. An overturned truck blocking the road up the escarpment prevented us getting there on the day. Opportunity missed.

The last op for a ele, was a really death defiling hunt, a ele bull stuck in the mud in Lake Kariba. Parks wanted it shot as it was suffering. Would have made a real "Death in my muddy footsteps" close encounter video. (but a mercy killing, not a hunt). Of course they only told me about this "opportunity" on my last day.

Re: My Cape Buffalo has finally arrived!

Yes I do want to get back. Now has been eleven years since the last time.

First time I was in Africa was in 1988 - no hunting.

Second time honeymoon and a plains game safari in Zimbabwe - fantastic safari in 1994. 6 years.

Third was 2002 and this cape buff hunt in the Matetsi Safari area after the Gwayi Valley in Zim. After a hunt with Dantri in South Africa. 8 years.

This 2002 safari was dramatised by the Gwayi Valley farm being invaded by Warvets when I was there. Later hunted Matetsi Safari area. Where we had more warvet troubles.

Fourth was in 2006, a plains game hunt with Karl Stumpfe in Namibia, then ele cows in the Zambezi valley in Northern Omay. Then my wife came over and we did the Garden Route in South Africa.

Now 2017, eleven years ... time ticking by. The urge is strong. The wallet needs to be a little stronger.

Unfortunately mine still is not !

I was in contact with the company in Mozambique, which gave me hope that it would soon be ready for export.

After all, the hunting action took place at the end of September last year.
