That's a beautiful bull. Who did you take him with? |
I hunted with a chap called Danie Van Ellewee from Into Africa Safaris. This bull was my hardest hunt in Africa to date. Many hours of crawling on hands and knees in the hot sand. As you can see, there is not much cover. You can also see that I am not looking too happy. That is because I shot badly and it took more shots and time than it should have to finish what I started and I hate to see anything suffer, let alone something as magnificent and regal as these guys. |

Thanks for the details. I understand your feeling about making a less than perfect first shot. Remember though, that it has happened to everyone who has hunted for any length of time. The bottom line is that you hunted it fairly, and persevered until the task was finished. For that you should stand proud. |

Quote: I used my .30-06 with 200 gr Nosler Partitions. The PH was especially pleased as another (pseudo) PH at camp said it couldn't be done with such a 'small' calibre. One heart shot with an insurance shot. Dantri (BigFive) on here in the past used his .243. But I agree, the 9.3x62 or .375 is pretty ideal. I must scan some of my old photos and add some here too. *** Gentlemen, Thanks for the eland photos. Magnificent. |

The nice thing about Eland is they not only look great, but they're wonderful on the grill. |

Nice pictures, thank you for sharing it. I am going to Namibia in march. I have won a 5 day hunt with 3 games included at Keerweder Safaris. Iīm thinking of some more games like Oryx or Kudu. What weapon shall I take with me? I would like to take my double 9,3x74R scoped with a zeiss 1,25-4 Varipoint, but it looks like its a better idea to bring my Blaser 9,3x62 scoped with 1-6 Varipoint. Isnīt often long distance shooting? Regards Sville |

When I hunted Namibia in 2005, I was informed by the PH that the shots would be 180-200 mtrs. Now this is not the type of hunting that I usually like to do, but I thought "when in Rome". I loaded the .375 accordingly with 270gr Woodleighs PP doing 2800 f/s. Lighter and a lot faster then I would normally use. Turned out the shots were quite a bit shorter. The longest being about 70 mtrs. This off course meant that the loads I had were not altogether ideal. What I should have done and what I always load the .375 with is 300gr Woodleighs RN at about 2450 f/s. . |

Last autumn in Zim Kwe-Kwe area, Ingwe Safaris. .30-06 Winchster m/70 Lightweight. Speer Nitrex ammo w/ Speer Grand Slam 180grs bullets, shot @ a lazered 178metres = 199yds! Totally changed my view of the .30-06. Had I known how bloody far it was, I would not have taken the shot. NO wonder it looked mighty small in the scope however big an Eland is. And this is how you load one in a Landie.... Good work with the Leatherman, there, Shaun! - Lars/Finland |
